Nicki Mitchell - W Soccer
(fr. Nazareth/Nazareth)
Nicki Mitchell, of the women's soccer team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Mitchell helped the Golden Bears clinch the PSAC East title with wins over West Chester and Millersville. In the victory over Millersville, Mitchell had seven saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the season. For the week, she had eight saves and allowed one goal.

SAT 10/30 - PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS (at Kutztown)
Women: 3rd/14 - The Golden Bear women placed third in a 14 team field as they hosted the PSAC Championships. Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) earned All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors with a time of 23:46 to capture 14th place. The Golden Bears' next three runners finished consecutively. Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) finished 21st in 24:25, Madonna Patterson (so. Philadelphia/William Penn) was 22nd in 24:28 and Chelsea Thomas (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) turned in a 24:29 for 23rd. Desiree Bower (so. Bethel/Tulpehocken) completed the scoring for Kutztown with a 25:21 for 38th place on the 6K run. Edinboro dominated the race, accumulating just 26 points to win its seventh-straight title. After Edinboro, there was a three-way fight for second. Slippery Rock ended the meet with 114 points, just four ahead of the Golden Bears and five in front of IUP. Clarion rounded out the top five with 136 points.
Men: 6th/14 - Kutztown's men finished sixth as a team. The Golden Bears had strong grouping, as the top five finished within 35 seconds of one another. Keith Gruchacz (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) led KU with a 27th place finish in 27:06 on the 8K course. Dan Wilde's (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) 27:16 put him in 33rd place. With a time of 27:17, Pat Coyne (so. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) was 35th. Joe Haughey (so. Richboro/Council Rock South) ran a 27:29, good for 39th and Gerard Ganey (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) placed 42nd in 27:38. Lock Haven runners finished first and second as the Bald Eagles won their second-straight PSAC title. Edinboro placed second as a team in the 14 school field, with 62 points. In third place in the team scoring was Shippensburg, with 83 points. Bloomsburg tallied 156 points for fourth place, followed by IUP in fifth with 174. Kutztown finished sixth, just two points behind Indiana (PA).

TUE 10/26 - Bloomsburg 4, KU 1 - Kutztown was knocked out of the PSAC Playoffs with a 4-1 loss to Bloomsburg Tuesday afternoon in semifinal action. Bloomsburg and Kutztown battled up and down the field in the opening minutes of play with neither team getting off a shot on goal. With 26 minutes left to play in the period, Kutztown's Laura Belfatti (so. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) had a shot on goal on a corner play with the Bloomsburg goalie getting a kick save to keep the game scoreless. The Huskies had their first scoring chance off a corner play with 10:45 left in the first half when a Husky shot went just wide of the goal. Bloomsburg finally broke through with 1:28 left in the first period off a corner play to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Huskies added to their lead just over a minute into the second half off another corner play for a 2-0 lead. Kutztown came back with three penalty corners in a one-minute span with 30 minutes to play, but the Golden Bears got off just one shot in the sequence. Bloomsburg made it 3-0 with 15:52 to play on the Huskies' fifth corner of the half. The Huskies iced the game with a goal with 10:11 left to play in the game. Kutztown finally broke through with 25 seconds to play when Colleen Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) scored off an assist from Lauren Blain (jr. Marietta/Donegal) on a corner play. Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) had three saves in goal.

TUE 10/26 - West Chester 2, KU 0 - West Chester scored a pair of second-half goals to record the 2-0 victory and knock the Golden Bears from any PSAC Playoff consideration. The Rams broke a scoreless deadlock in the 59th minute, then added an insurance goal at 63:03. Ryan Kratz (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) had five saves for Kutztown.
THU 10/28 - KU 2, WILMINGTON 1 - The Golden Bears picked up a pair of first half goals to defeat Wilmington (DE), 2-1. Mike Schendock (sr. Swoyersville/Bishop O'Reilly) scored the game-winner at 19:16, and Giovanni Russo (fr. Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) added a score at 31:40. Matt Kade (fr. Quakertown/Quakertown) assisted on both KU scores. Wilmington scored its goal in the second half, at 69:40. Kratz made the start in goal for Kutztown, picking up 11 saves.
SAT 10/30 - KU 3, FELICIAN 2 (2OT) - Schendock scored in the 106th minute, with an assist from Marc Benson (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown), to lift Kutztown to a 3-2 double overtime win over Felician. Benson had a goal and two assists in the contest. Felician took an early lead in the game, scoring on a penalty kick in the fourth minute. Benson tied the game during the eighth minute, with an assist from Mike McCabe (fr. Shohola/Delaware Valley). Benson returned the favor seven minutes later, feeding McCabe to put the Golden Bears ahead 2-1. The lead lasted just six minutes, as Felician scored at 21 minutes to knot the score at 2-2. Neither team would score for the next 85 minutes. The Golden Bears had several good chances in the second half and overtimes, but the Felician goalkeeper turned them away. Not to be outdone, Kratz, who finished with four saves, made a diving save of his own during the final seconds of the first overtime. KU outshot Felician 11-to-8. With the win, Kutztown concludes its 2004 season with a mark of 9-9-2.

TUE 10/26 - KU 2, West Chester 1 - Kutztown clinched a PSAC Playoff spot and put itself in the driver's seat to clinch the first-ever PSAC Eastern Division regular season crown with a 2-1 win over West Chester on Tuesday. Julie Folsom (fr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) put KU on the board at the 20:48 mark of the first half, with an assist from Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville). Just over a minute later, WCU tied the score, but the Golden Bears answered right back. At 23:06, Jeannine Bria (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) scored the game-winner, off a pass from Kelly Murdock (fr. West Lawn/Wilson). Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) had two saves in goal for KU.
SAT 10/30 - KU 2, MILLERSVILLE 0 - Kutztown clinched the first-ever PSAC Eastern Division title with the 2-0 win over Millersville at Keystone Field Saturday. Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) scored the game-winner off an assist from Erin Gallagher (jr. Vorhees, NJ/Eastern) in the 62nd minute. Five minutes later, Kate Downing (sr. Reading/Muhlenberg) scored, unassisted, to secure KU's lead. Mitchell notched seven saves in goal for Kutztown. With the win, Kutztown improves to 13-4-2 overall and 8-3-1 in the PSAC East for 25 points, finishing one point ahead of second-place West Chester (24 pts) for the PSAC East crown and first-round playoff bye. The Golden Bears host the winner of Tuesday's first-round game between Bloomsburg and West Chester on Friday at 1:00 PM at Keystone Field. The winner of Friday's semifinal advances to face the winner of the Western Division semifinal on Sunday.

TUE 10/26 - SHIPPENSBURG 3, KU 2 - Kutztown dropped the final two games to fall 3-2 to Shippensburg at Keystone Arena Tuesday night. Shippensburg stormed out of the gate with a 30-20 win in game one, but KU bounced back with 30-24 and 34-32 wins in the next two games. The Lady Raiders evened the match with a 30-27 game four win, then rolled to a 15-6 score in the decisive game five. Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) had 19 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Jenn Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) had 12 kills and Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) had 53 assists. With the loss, KU falls to 17-11 overall, 4-4 in the PSAC East. Despite the loss, the Golden Bears still control their own destiny in claiming one of three PSAC East Playoff berths. KU has contests remaining against Cheyney (11/2) and East Stroudsburg (11/6).
