Athlete of the Week 

Kim Kelty - W Soccer
(fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) 

         Kim Kelty, of the women's soccer team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Kelty was instrumental in KU's run to the PSAC championship game.  Kelty assisted two goals, including the tying and winning scores, in Kutztown's 4-3 win over Bloomsburg.  She then scored a goal in KU's 3-2 loss to IUP in the PSAC Championship game.

       SAT 11/6 - at NCAA East Regional (at Indiana, PA)

       Women:  2nd/25 - The Kutztown University women's cross country team qualified for the 2004 NCAA Championships with a second place finish at the NCAA East Regional.  Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) earned All-Region honors for the Golden Bears, finishing 11th in 21:51 on the 6K course.  Edinboro won the team title at the event, held at Indiana (PA).  The Fighting Scots finished with just 30 points.  The Golden Bears tallied 112 points to finish second in the 25 team field.  Chelsea Thomas (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) ended her race in 16th with a time of 22:25.  Madonna Patterson (Philadelphia/William Penn) ran a 22:32 to finish 18th, the final of three Kutztown runners in the top 20.  Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) was KU's fourth runner, finishing 22nd with a time of 22:44.  Rounding out the Kutztown scoring contingent was Stephanie Williams (fr. Harrisburg/Riverside).  Williams ran a 23:29 to place 45th.  With the second place finish, Kutztown will be heading to the NCAA Championships for the third time in school history.  The Golden Bears also qualified for the NCAAs in the 2000 and 2001 seasons, finishing 19th both times.  The second place finish was a two-place improvement over 2003, when Kutztown finished fourth as a team.

Men:  9th/26 - The Kutztown University men's cross country team placed ninth of 26 teams at the NCAA East Regional, held at Indiana (PA).  The Golden Bears came out on the short end of a three-way fight for seventh.  Kutztown had 229 points, while seventh place East Stroudsburg had 227.  Alderson Broaddus finished eighth, just one point ahead of KU.  Gerard Ganey (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) led the Golden Bears with a 35th place finish in 34:02.  Pat Coyne (so. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) placed 40th with a time of 34:21.  In 44th was Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) in a time of 34:26.  Pat Bone (fr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) clocked a 34:47 to place 52nd and Joe Haughey (so. Richboro/Council Rock South) finished 58th in 35:05.  The Golden Bears improved one-place in the team standings, after finishing 10th in 2003.  Lock Haven won the team championship with 36 points.

FRI 11/5 - KU 4, BLOOMSBURG 3 - Kutztown picked up a 4-3 win over Bloomsburg in a PSAC semifinal contest.  Julie Folsom (fr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) scored a pair of goals as the Golden Bears notched their first playoff victory and tied the school record for wins in a season.  The game started out with Bloomsburg scoring on its first shot and the Golden Bears on their first two.  The Huskies scored off a corner at 5:52.  Kutztown tied the game at 11:07, also converting a corner.  Ashley Smith (so.  Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) took a tipped ball and found the back of the net.  Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) had the assist.  The Golden Bears took the lead on just their second shot of the contest.  Folsom scored the first of her two goals, with assists from Smith and Jeannine Bria (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) at 13:43.  BU tied the score at 2-2 at 24:46.  Kutztown again took the lead, when Chrissy Jack (jr. Palermo, NJ/Ocean City) scored with a diving kick off a cross from Kim Kelty (Levittown/Neshaminy) at 38:19.  The Huskies scored again to make the halftiime score 3-3, with a goal at 41:34.  In the second half, the two teams battled without a score until 67:16.  Kelty crossed the ball to the front of the goal, where Folsom stole it from Bloomsburg's keeper and punched in the game-winner.  Kelty picked up her second assist of the day on the score.  The Golden Bears outshot Bloomsburg 13-to-8 in the win.  After giving up three goals in the first half, KU's defense clamped down to hold the Huskies to just three shots in the second half.  None of which required a save from Nicki Mitchell (Nazareth/Nazareth) - who did not have a save in the entire game.  KU's defensive effort was led by Danielle Schlupp (fr. Holland/Council Rock South), Jamie Miller (fr. Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) and Kate Downing (sr. Reading/Muhlenberg).

SUN 11/7 - IUP 3, KU 2 - Kutztown fell 3-2 to Indiana (PA) in the PSAC Championship final.  The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead at 13:00, when Kelly Murdock (so. West Lawn/Wilson) scored with an assist from Tatro.  The lead stood for 10 minutes, before a 17 minute stretch that saw IUP score three goals.  The Indians scored at 23:00, then scored the game-winner two minutes later, at 25:00.  Indiana capped its scoring at 40:00, with its third goal of the half.  Kutztown scored the only goal of the second half, when Kelty scored off an assist from Smith at the 63:00 mark.  KU outshot the Indians 9-to-7.  Mitchell made three saves in goal for the Golden Bears, who fall to 14-5-2 on the season.  Kutztown remains at 14 wins for the year, which is tied for a school single season record.  KU won 14 games in 2003, as well.

TUE 11/2 - KU 3, Cheyney 0 - Kutztown set a school record with 34 aces, and Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) tied the single-season record for kills in KU's 3-0 win at Cheyney.  Game scores were 30-3, 30-4 and 30-4.  Brandon had five kills to move into a tie with Missy Klein's 2002 record of 445.  Heather Schreiber (fr. Dunkirk, MD/Northern) had 13 of KU's 34 aces, breaking the single-match record of 29 set in the first meeting with Cheyney this season.  Nicole Biuso (fr. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) had 11 assists and six aces.  Tara Galloway (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) had six kills and Krystalee George (so. Alburtis/Emmaus) added four kills.  Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) had 10 assists and four aces.  Stephanie Biester (fr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Pendergast) had six aces and Kim Cifuni (fr. Springfield/Springfield) added four.

WED 11/3 - KU 3, WILMINGTON (DE) 1 - Brandon set the KU single-season kill record as the Golden Bears defeated Wilmington (DE) in four games.  After winning the first two games, 30-24 and 30-19, KU dropped the third game, 20-30, before rebounding for a 32-30 win in game four.  Brandon had a team-high 18 kills in the match, bringing her season total to 463.  That surpasses Klein's 2002 record.  Brandon also had 14 digs in the win.  Herman dished out 50 assists, had 20 digs and served three aces.  Biuso led Kutztown with 34 digs.  Dani Witherite (so. Pennsylvania Furnace/State College) added 11 kills and 14 digs, while Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) had nine kills and 13 digs.

SAT 11/6 - EAST STROUDSBURG 3, KU 2 - Kutztown fell in five games to East Stroudsburg in the PSAC East finale with a playoff berth on the line.  With the loss, the Golden Bears are eliminated from playoff contention, while East Stroudsburg secured the final playoff berth from the East.  Brandon led the Golden Bears with 14 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.  Witherite had 12 kills and 23 digs.  Sullivan and Jenn Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) each had 11 kills for KU.  Herman turned in 44 assists and 16 digs in the match.  Cifuni tied Witherite with a team-high 23 digs.  Shelby Bunting (so. Green Lane/Pennridge) had five blocks.  The Golden Bears finish the regular season with a record of 19-12 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC East.
