Athlete of the Week 

Lauren McCabe - Field Hockey
(jr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) 

         Lauren McCabe, of the field hockey team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  McCabe led the Golden Bears to a 3-0 week, including PSAC wins over Millersville and Mansfield.  McCabe scored a goal in the 5-1 win over Millersville, a goal and an assist in the 6-2 victory vs. Mansfield and two goals in a 4-0 win against Mercyhurst.

         SAT 10/2 - Tidewater Classic (Salisbury, MD)

         Women:  1st/9 (39 points) - Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) finished second to lead the Golden Bears to the team victory at the Tidewater Classic, hosted by Salisbury University.  Lare posted a time of 21:54 on the 6K course to place second.  Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) and Chelsea Thomas (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) also finished in the top six in the race.  Mousley placed fifth with a time of 22:48, with Thomas sixth in 22:54.  Desiree Bower (so. Bethel/Tulpehocken) placed 12th with her time of 23:28.  Kristin Green (fr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) completed the scoring for KU, running a 23:41 for 14th place.  Kutztown's 39 points gave the Golden Bears the victory, 13 points ahead of second place Salisbury.

Men:  2nd/9 (56 points) - The Kutztown men placed three runners in the top ten on the way to second place finish at the Tidewater Classic.  Keith Gruchacz (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) placed sixth, running the 8K in 25:57.  Gerard Ganey (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) finished eighth, with a 25:59.  Pat Coyne (so. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) joined them in the top ten, finishing tenth with his 26:08.  Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) and Pat Bone (fr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) rounded out the scoring for KU.  Wilde was 14th in 26:25, while Bone placed 22nd in 26:47.  The Golden Bears totaled 56 points, trailing only the meet champions, Shippensburg, in the team standings.

Last Week's Action

MON 9/27 - KU 5, Millersville 1 - Heather Hoxter (fr. Parkesburg/Octorara) netted a pair of goals to lead Kutztown to the 5-1 PSAC win at Millersville.  Hoxter's goals came in the first half, the first unassisted and the second helped along by Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading).  Kline added an unassisted goal of her own early in the second half, and Lauren McCabe (jr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) scored off a pass from Jess Deveney (fr. Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth-Whitemarsh).  After Millersville made it 4-1, the Golden Bears answered less than a minute later when Colleen Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) found Amanda Behney (jr. Lyons/Kutztown) for the game's final goal.  Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) had two saves in the first 42 minutes, while Sam Flowers (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) had one save in the final 28.  KU outshot the Marauders 23-to-6.

THU 9/30 - KU 6, MANSFIELD 2 - Mandi Turner (so. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) had two goals and two assists and Lauren Blain (jr. Marietta/Donegal) also scored two goals, as KU drubbed Mansfield 6-2 in a PSAC contest.  Blain got the scoring started with an assist from McCabe with 25:19 left in the half.  Mansfield tied the game at the 21:58 mark, before the Golden Bears scored three consecutive goals to take control of the contest.  Laura Belfatti (so. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) knocked in the game-winner at the 1:44 mark of the first half.  Turner assisted on that score and KU's first of four second half goals.  Blain scored that goal with 28:50 remaining in the contest.  Ciara Borden (sr. Hanover/Delone Catholic) found Turner less than two minutes later.  After the Mountaineers cut the lead to 4-2 at 12:47, Turner scored unassisted at 6:18 and McCabe added another score at the 1:00 mark to seal the win.  Hershey played the first 52:54 in goal, making six saves.  The Golden Bears outshot Mansfield 19-to-9 in the contest.

SAT 10/2 -KU 4, MERCYHURST 0 - McCabe scored a pair of first half goals as Kutztown shutout Mercyhurst, 4-0.  McCabe scored the game-winner just four minutes into the contest, with an assist from Kline.  McCabe added her second goal of the game with 27:34 left in the first half.  Blain picked up an assist on the score.  In the second half, Behney had a hand in both of the KU goals.  She assisted on a Turner goal with 22:33 remaining, then scored unassisted at the 10:56 mark.  Hershey and Flowers split time in cage for the Golden Bears.  Hershey played the first 53:15, with Flowers picking up the balance.  Each player made one save as Kutztown outshot Mercyhurst 28-to-2.

WED 9/29 - KU 2, New Haven 1 - The Golden Bears scored their fifth straight win with a 2-1 decision over New Haven.  After a scoreless first half, Marc Benson (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) put KU in the lead with an assist from Alan Hallman (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) at 47:00.  The Chargers knotted the count at 1-1 with a penalty kick at 72:00.  Bob St. Laurent (sr. Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) scored the game-winner with just four minutes to play, with an assist from Benson.  Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) made a pair of saves in goal as KU outshot New Haven 12-to-5.  

SAT 10/2 - California (PA) 3, KU 0 - The Golden Bears' five-game win streak was snapped with a 3-0 shutout loss at California (PA).  The Vulcans led 1-0 at the half and added two more in the second half to seal the win.  Sherman played all 90 minutes in goal for KU, stopping six shots.  Kutztown was outshot 11-to-6 in the game.

WED 9/29 - KU 3, Bloomsburg 1 - KU built a 2-0 first half lead and held on for a 3-1 win over Bloomsburg in a PSAC East contest.  Julie Folsom (fr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) scored what proved to be the game-winner at 4:20, with an assist from Kelly Murdock (so. West Lawn/Wilson).  Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) scored the Golden Bears' other first half goal, at 25:56, with an assist from Jamie Miller (fr. Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser).  In the second half, Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) fed Kim Kelty (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) to extend the lead to 3-0 at 50:49.  The Huskies scored their only goal at 58:16.  Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) made five saves in net for the Golden Bears.  KU surrendered seven shots in the game, while taking just five.

SAT 10/2 - KU 2, California (PA) 0 - Kutztown scored once in the first half and once in the second half for a 2-0 victory over California (PA).  Folsom scored at 17:00 with the help of Kelty.  Murdock scored the Golden Bears' other goal, at 76:00, with an assist from Missy Dailey (fr. Warminster/William Tennent).  Mitchell and Lesley Freer (fr. Honesdale/Honesdale) combined on the shutout in goal for KU.  Mitchell played the first 83:00, making five saves.  Freer finished the game, playing the final seven minutes.  Kutztown outshot the Vulcans 15-to-6 in the contest.

SAT 10/2 - SUN 10/3 - at ITA East Regional (Bloomsburg, PA) - The men's tennis team opened its season with individual competition at the ITA Regional Tournament at Bloomsburg.  In 'A' Flight singles, Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta/INDIA) advanced to the final (played Monday).  After a first round bye, Sharma blew through the next three rounds, dropping just five games in three matches.  Radoslaw Hlubinski (jr. Warsaw, POLAND) also competed in the 'A' Singles Flight.  He advanced to the round of 16, before falling.  The 'B' Singles Flight saw Nick Gallagher (fr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) advance to the quarterfinals, before falling in a tie-breaker.  In doubles action in the 'A' Flight, the teams of Somdeep Appineni (so. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Lukas Beman (so. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) and Hlubinski and Sharma each won first round matches, Appineni and Beman were eliminated in the second round, but Hlubinski and Sharma advanced all the way to the semifinals.  In 'B' Doubles, Gallagher and Matthew Gawrych (fr. Burlington, NJ/Holy Cross) won a match before losing in the quarterfinals.
