Athlete of the Week 

Kim Kelty - W Soccer
(fr. Levittown/Neshaminy)

         Kim Kelty, of the women's soccer team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week  In a 2-0 week for the Golden Bears, Kelty had two goals and an assist.  She scored the first goal in KU's 4-1 win over Bloomsburg, assisting on the go-ahead goal.  In Kutztown's 2-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit, Kelty netted the game's first goal.

Last Week's Action

       WED 10/6 - KU 2, Slippery Rock 0 - Kutztown blanked Slippery Rock, 2-0 to improve to 7-2 in PSAC play.  KU netted a goal in each half.  Amanda Behney (jr. Lyons/Kutztown) scored unassisted at the 27:45 mark of the first half, while Mandi Turner (so. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) took a pass from Lauren Blain (jr. Marietta/Donegal) to score with 22:08 left in the second.  KU keeper Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) benefitted from strong pressure and defense in front of her, recording just one save.

SAT 10/9 - KU 2, SLIPPERY ROCK 0 - Kutztown held Slippery Rock to just a single shot in a 2-0 shutout win.  The Golden Bears scored both of their goals in a two-minute span in the first half.  Blain scored the game-winner with her ninth goal of the season at 23:33.  Turner assisted on the goal.  Then, at 21:56, Ciara Borden (sr. Hanover/Delone Catholic) scored her first of the season, with an assist from Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading).  Kutztown held a 15-to-1 advantage in shots on goal.  Hershey picked up the shutout, making one save.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/5 - KU 1, BLOOMSBURG 0 (OT) - Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) picked up the KU career shutout record to lead KU to a 1-0 overtime victory over Bloomsburg in a PSAC matchup.  Sherman made three saves in the win as he passed Kevin Berger with 10.5 career shutouts.  Brian Walter (jr. Feasterville/Neshaminy) scored 2:50 into overtime, with an assist from Alan Hallman (jr. Macungie/Emmaus). 

SAT 10/9 - SLIPPERY ROCK 2, KU 0 - The Golden Bears were shut out by Slippery Rock, 2-0, despite a 10-to-6 advantage in shots.  Slippery Rock scored goals at 12:00 and 78:00.  Sherman made three saves in net for KU.

TUE 10/5 - KU 4, BLOOMSBURG 1 - Kutztown scored three second half goals to break a 1-1 tie and take a 4-1 win over Bloomsburg in a PSAC East contest.  Kim Kelty (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) scored the game's first goal at the 6:50 mark, with an assist from Julie Folsom (fr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional).  The Huskies scored 19 minutes later and the tie held until the 51:00 mark.  Kelty crossed the ball to Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.), who scored the game-winner.  Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) scored on a penalty kick at 69:00 and Missy Dailey (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) took a bobbled ball from the Bloomsburg keeper and scored at 74:00 for insurance.  Lesley Freer (fr. Honesdale/Honesdale) made her first career start in goal, stopping four shots.  The Golden Bears outshot the Huskies 8-to-5 in the game. 

SAT 10/9 - KU 2, WHEELING JESUIT 1 - The Golden Bears scored two first half goals in a 2-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit.  Kelty scored the first goal, at the 6:30 mark, unassisted.  In the 35th minute, Chrissy Jack (jr. Palermo, NJ/Ocean City) scored with an assist from Kelly Murdock (so. Wilson/West Lawn) to make the halftime score, 2-0.  Wheeling Jesuit scored a late goal at 88:30.  Freer made three saves in goal for KU.  Kutztown took eight shots in the contest, surrendering seven.

Last Week's Action

SAT 10/9 - KU 8, FRANKLIN PIERCE 1 - The Golden Bears won all but one match in their season-opener against Franklin Pierce.  Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Radoslaw Hlubinski (jr. Warsaw, POLAND) teamed up at first doubles for a win.  Somdeep Appineni (so. Hyderabad, INDIA) and Lukas Beman (so. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) won at second doubles, and Mukundan Nandakumar (sr. Chennai, INDIA) and Nick Gallagher (fr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) made it a doubles sweep with a win at third doubles.  Nandakumar, Hlubinski, Appineni, Beman and Gallagher all won in singles action.  All five players won in straight sets.

SAT 10/9 - KU 8, FRANKLIN PIERCE 1 - The women's tennis team picked up its first win of the year, with an 8-1 decision over Franklin Pierce.  KU swept singles play with Priya Pachkawde (fr. Nasik, INDIA), Jharna Nansi (so. Mumbai, INDIA), Kristen Bodalski (jr. Media/Cardinal O'Hara), Jolie Folkowski (sr. Green Twp., NJ/Pope John XXIII) and Meredith Barnes (fr. Chambersburg/Chambersburg) winning at first through fifth singles, respectively.  All five players won their matches in straight sets.  Pachkawde and Nansi also teamed up for a win at first doubles.  The Golden Bears received default wins at third doubles and sixth singles.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/5 - East Stroudsburg 3, KU 1 - Kutztown's 15 match PSAC East win-streak came to a halt with a four game loss at East Stroudsburg.  Game scores were 30-17, 24-30, 14-30 and 29-31.  Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) had 20 kills, 11 digs, and six blocks in the loss.  Dani Witherite (so. Pennsylvania Furnace/State College) turned in 13 kills and 13 digs.  Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) had nine kills and 13 digs.  Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) handed out 45 assists.  It was the Golden Bears' first loss to a PSAC East opponent since October 29, 2002 in a match at West Chester. 

FRI 10/8-SAT 10/9 - at PSAC Crossover (at Shippensburg)

FRI 10/8 - IUP 3, KU 0 - Kutztown fell in three games to IUP in a PSAC Crossover match played in Shippensburg.  Game scores were 30-22, 30-19 and 30-20.  Witherite led the KU attack with 12 kills and 14 digs.  Brandon added 10 kills and three blocks.  Heather Schreiber (Dunkirk, MD/Northern) had nine kills, while Nicole Biuso (S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) led the Golden Bears with 17 digs.  Herman dished out 35 assists to go along with 11 digs.  

SAT 10/9 - Lock Haven 3, KU 1 - The Golden Bears fell in four games to Lock Haven in a PSAC Crossover played at Shippensburg.  Game scores were 23-30, 30-28, 24-30 and 17-30.  Witherite and Brandon led the Kutztown offense with 18 kills apiece.  Witherite added 11 digs, while Brandon had 13.  Katie Herman handed out 43 assists and had 11 digs.  Nicole Biuso had a team-high 18 digs, while Kim Cifuni (fr. Springfield/Springfield) notched 11.

KU 3, Edinboro 1 - Kutztown rebounded to beat Edinboro in four games in their final PSAC Crossover at Shippensburg.  Game scores were 30-19, 31-29, 27-30 and 30-28.  Brandon and Witherite tied for the team-high with 14 kills each.  Brandon also had three blocks and nine digs, while Witherite added 16 digs.  Heather Schreiber had 11 kills and Shelby Bunting (so. Green Lane/Pennridge) had nine kills and three blocks.  Jenn Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) picked up seven kills and five blocks in the win.  Herman finished with 45 assists and 11 digs.
