Athlete of the Week 

Andrea Ely - W Golf
(fr. Oley/Oley Valley) 

         Andrea Ely, of the women's golf team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Ely shot identical rounds of 81 to lead Kutztown to an 11th place finish at the Division I dominated Bucknell Invitational.  Ely's cards tied KU's record for single rounds on a par 71 course, while her two-day score of 162 is a school record.

       SAT 10/23 - at East Stroudsburg Invitational

       Women:  3rd/7 - Erica Kabbeko (fr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) placed third overall as KU finished third at the East Stroudsburg Invitational.  Kabbeko completed the 5K in a time of 20:28.  Krystal Klunk (fr. Littlestown/Littlestown) was the fifth runner to cross the line, in 20:34.  In 16th place was Meghan Wynosky (sr. Minersville/Nativity BVM), who ran a time of 21:28.  Stephanie Milinchik (fr. Whitehall/Whitehall) placed 26th in a time of 22:13.  Katelyn Katzgrau (fr. West Milford, NJ/Pope John XXIII) completed the scoring for the Golden Bears, running a 22:38.  ESU won the team title with 46 points, edging out Bloomsburg by just a single point.  KU was third with 73 points.

Men:  No team score - Nate Manbeck (fr. Womelsdorf/Tulpehocken) and Blake Vaught (fr. Greenville, VA/Riverheads) competed at the East Stroudsburg Invitational.  Manbeck placed 14th with a time of 17:24 on the 5K course, while Vaught's 17:28 brought him a 19th place finish.  With just two runners participating, the Golden Bears failed to accumulate a team score.  ESU won the team title with 31 points.

WED 10/20 - Indiana (PA) 2, KU 1 (ot) - Indiana (PA) scored on a penalty stroke 27 seconds into overtime to hand the Golden Bears a heartbreaking 2-1 loss Wednesday night.  After a scoreless first half, the Indians took the lead with 24:25 left in regulation.  Heather Hoxter (fr. Parkesburg/Octorara) tied it up for KU with 8:40 remaining on an unassisted goal.  In overtime, IUP drew a penalty stroke and converted.  Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) notched five saves in goal for KU.  Three of Kutztown's losses this year have come in overtime.

SAT 10/23 - Bloomsburg 3, KU 0 - Kutztown fell 3-0 at Bloomsburg in the regular season finale.  The Huskies broke the game open in the first half with a pair of goals in a one minute span, beginning at 25:34.  Bloomsburg added a goal in the second half at 21:42.  Hershey made 11 saves in goal as KU was outshot 18-to-3 in the loss.  With the loss, KU dropped to the No. 4 seed in the PSAC Championships.  The Huskies locked up the No. 1 seed with the win, meaning the teams will square off again in Bloomsburg on Tuesday.  Also on Saturday, IUP clinched the two-seed, and will host Shippensburg in the other semifinal.

SAT 10/23-SUN 10/24 - Lady Bison Classic (at Bucknell Golf Club, Lewisburg, PA; par-71, 5,845 yards) - 11th/17 - The Golden Bears set 18 and 36-hole scoring records for a par-71 course and beat several Division I teams at the Lady Bison Classic, hosted by Bucknell.  The Golden Bears finished 11th in a 17 team field.  Andrea Ely (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) tied a KU record with two rounds of 81 to finish tied for 13th. Holly Shubilla (so. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) placed in a tie for 39th with after shooting 87 and 86 for a 173 total.  Angie Petak (fr. Brockway/Brockway) and Amy Miller (fr. Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) were both much improved in round two.  Petak followed an opening round 96 with an 87 for a total of 183, and Miller knocked seven shots off her opening round with a second round of 91 for a 189 total.  The Golden Bears set a school record on a par-71 on day one with a 353, and then broke that mark the next day with a total of 345.  The 36-hole 698 also set a KU record.  The Golden Bears beat a number of Division I schools at the tournament, including Fairfield, Lehigh and Central Connecticut St.  St. John's won the team title with a total of 621 and a Harvard golfer turned in a 151 to win the individual crown.

WED 10/20 - EAST STROUDSBURG 2, KU 0 - Despite holding East Stroudsburg to just a pair of shots, KU came out on the short end of a 2-0 final against the Warriors.  ESU made the shots count, however, with goals in the 57th and 81st minutes.

SAT 10/23 - NYACK 4, KU 2 - The Golden Bears dropped a 4-2 decision at home versus Nyack.  After Nyack scored in the fourth minute, Alan Hallman (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) scored with an assist from Mike McCabe (fr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) at 4:59 to knot the score at 1-1.  The Warriors, however, would score three consecutive goals to put the contest away.  Giovanni Russo (fr. Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) scored KU's second goal at 80:54.  Brian Walter (jr. Feasterville/Neshaminy) assisted on the score.  Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) and Ryan Kratz (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) split time in goal for Kutztown.  Sherman started and played the first 42:00, allowing two Nyack scores.  Kratz played the remaining 48:00, making two saves and allowing two goals.

WED 10/20 - KU 3, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 - Julie Folsom (fr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) scored two goals as KU won its eighth straight contest in a 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg.  The victory broke the school record for consecutive wins, set just last season, and extended the Golden Bears unbeaten streak to ten games.  Folsom got KU on the board in the seventh minute, with a assists from Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) and Mallary Kamen (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.).  Kelly Murdock (so. West Lawn/Wilson) scored just before the intermission, at 43:00, to give Kutztown a 2-0 halftime lead.  Kim Kelty (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) assisted on the goal.  Folsom scored her second goal of the game, and ninth of the season, in the 86th minute to ice the contest.  Kamen added her second assist of the game.  Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) picked up the start in goal and made two saves for the shutout as the KU defense held the Warriors to just two shots.

SAT 10/23 - SHIPPENSBURG 1, KU 0 - The Golden Bears' record eight-game win streak came to a halt with a 1-0 loss to Shippensburg in a PSAC East contest.  The Lady Raiders scored their goal just after play resumed in the second half, at 47:00.  Despite the loss, Kutztown turned in a strong defensive effort, allowing just two shots.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/19 - MILLERSVILLE 3, KU 2 - Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) dished out 53 assists to set the single season assist record, but it was not enough as the Golden Bears fell in five games to Millersville.  Game scores were 30-28, 23-30, 30-24, 27-30, and 8-15.  Herman finished the match with 1,096 assists on the season, shattering her old record of 1,074, set last season.  Additionally, she ended the night with 2,170 assists in her career, passing Robyn Kuhn (2,136) for second place all-time at KU.  Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) led KU with 21 kills, six blocks and 13 digs in the loss.  Jenn Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) notched 12 blocks.  Dani Witherite (so. Pennsylvania Furnace) had 19 kills and 19 digs.  Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) led the Golden Bears with 32 digs, while Nicole Biuso (fr. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) added 31.  Sullivan also had 15 kills.

THU 10/21 - KU 3, CHEYNEY 0 - Kutztown set a school record for aces in a match and picked up a three-game sweep win over Cheyney in a PSAC East contest.  Game scores were 30-6, 30-7, and 30-6.  KU picked up 29 aces in the match, breaking the old record of 25, set in 1996.  Heather Schreiber (fr. Dunkirk, MD/Northern) led the Golden Bears with 12 kills and nine aces in the match.  Erin Waters (fr. Waymart/Western Wayne) and Kim Cifuni (fr. Springfield/Springfield) had eight kills each.  Waters added four aces.  Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) dished out 16 assists and served up four aces.  Stephanie Biester (fr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Pendergast) notched five aces.

FRI 10/22 - KU 3, Philadelphia 0 - Kutztown defeated Philadelphia in three games for its second win in as many days.  Game scores were 30-21, 30-16 and 30-10.  Brandon paced the Golden Bears with 17 kills.  Witherite added 10 kills and 19 digs.  Herman handed out 43 assists in the victory.  Sullivan and Nicole Biuso each notched three service aces.  Sullivan added five kills and nine digs, while Biuso had 15 digs.
