Athlete of the Week

Yusef Turner, Football
(sr. Philadelphia/South Philadelphia) 

         Yusef Turner, of the football team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Turner had a career day for the Golden Bears in their 25-14 win over Clarion.  He had 10 tackles (8 solos), three tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass breakup, blocked a punt that was returned for a TD and returned a fumble for a TD.

       FRI 9/3 - at Lehigh Valley Championships (Bethlehem, PA)

       Women:  4th/6 - The Kutztown women's cross country team placed fourth at the Lehigh Valley Championships.  Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) led the way for KU, placing fourth in 23:04.  Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) placed 12th in 24:02.  Finishing in 18th place was Madonna Patterson (so. Philadelphia/William Penn).  She completed the 6K course in 24:38.  Stephanie Williams (fr. Harrisburg/Riverside) was the 20th runner to cross the finish line, running a time of 24:42.  Amanda Grant (sr. Whitehall/Whitehall) completed the scoring for the Golden Bears with a 25th place finish and a time of 24:58.  Lafayette and Lehigh tied for the team title with 46 points each.  Kutztown's 79 placed fourth.

      Men:  3rd/5 - The KU men opened their season with a third place finish at the Lehigh Valley Championships.  Keith Gruchacz (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) was the top finisher for the Golden Bears.  He placed eighth in 26:33.  Pat Bone (fr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) completed the 8K run in 27:13, good for 15th place.  Gerard Ganey (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) was 19th with a time of 27:30.  Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) and Pat Coyne (so. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) placed 21st and 22nd, respectively.  Wilde ran a time of 27:38, while Coyne turned in a 27:42.  Lehigh tallied just 23 points to win the event, with KU's 72 good for third.

THU 9/2 - KU 1, MILLERSVILLE 0 - Amanda Behney (jr. Lyons/Kutztown) scored unassisted at 29:58 of the first period for the game's only goal, as Kutztown defeated Millersville, 1-0.  The win was KU's third-straight to start the 2004 season.  Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) picked up her first shutout of the season, playing all 70 minutes in cage for the Golden Bears.  She made a pair of saves in goal, and Laura Belfatti (so. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) added a defensive save.  KU outshot the Marauders 8-to-2.

SAT 9/4 - KU 4, Mansfield 3 - Lauren Blain (jr. Marietta/Donegal) turned in her second two-goal game of the year as Kutztown improved to 4-0 on the season with a 4-3 win over Mansfield.  The Mountaineers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half before Blain scored with 16:51 left in the half.  Colleen Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) assisted on the goal.  KU tied the scored with 33:37 left in the second half, when Belfatti scored on a penalty stroke.  Mandi Turner (so. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) was assisted by Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) with 22:58 to play to give Kutztown a 3-2 lead.  Mansfield rebounded to tie the game at 3-3 at the 5:00 mark.  Blain scored the game-winner, unassisted, just 1:24 later.  Kutztown held a 36-5 advantage in shots.  Hershey and Sam Flowers (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) split time in cage for the Golden Bears.  Hershey played the first half and Flowers the second, with each player making one save.

WED 9/1 - KU 3, BLOOMFIELD 0 - Alan Hallman (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) had a goal and an assist to lead Kutztown to a 3-0 season-opening win over Bloomfield at Keystone Field.  Hallman started the scoring at the 27 minute mark, off a pass from Brian Walter (jr. Feasterville/Neshaminy).  Nearly 50 minutes later, Mike McCabe (fr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) scored his first collegiate goal, unassisted.  Hallman then found Marc Benson (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) for the final goal at the 86 minute mark.  Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) had three saves to earn the shutout.

FRI 9/3 - KU 1, New York Tech 1 (2OT) - The Golden Bears battled the nation's 20th-ranked team, New York Tech, to a 1-1 double-overtime draw.  Jim D'Angelo (so. Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham) scored to put KU ahead in the first half at the 29:00 mark.  Mike McCabe (fr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) assisted on the goal.  New York Tech tied it up at 54:00.  The two teams had chances in the overtimes, but neither could convert.  Kutztown finished with 16 shots on goal, with NYIT taking 19 shots on goal.  Sherman made 12 saves in net for the Golden Bears. 

SUN 9/5 - Dowling 5, KU 0 - Kutztown visited its second nationally-ranked foe in as many games, with the Golden Bears coming out on the short end of a 5-0 score against Dowling.  The No. 3 team in the nation led 2-0 at halftime and added three more in the second half.

FRI 9/3-SAT 9/4 - TGI FRIDAY'S/PIZZERIA UNO CLASSIC

FRI 9/3 - Southampton 1, KU 0 - A goal just five minutes into the first half led Southampton to a 1-0 win over Kutztown in the opening game of the TGI Friday's/Pizzeria Uno Classic at Keystone Field.  KU goalkeeper Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) had three saves in the game.  Both teams were credited with seven shots.

SAT 9/4 - Kutztown 2, New Haven 1 - Missy Dailey (fr. Warmninster/William Tennent) scored in the 83rd minute to lift the Golden Bears to a 2-1 win over New Haven in game four of the TGI Friday's/Pizzeria Uno Classic at Kutztown University.  Neither team scored in the first half, before Julie Folsom (fr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) scored with assists from Jamie Miller (fr. Sinking Spring Conrad Weiser) and Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) at 58:00 to give KU a 1-0 lead.  New Haven tied the score just one minute later and the teams battled until Dailey's goal at 83:00 broke the 1-1 tie.  Mitchell made six saves and allowed one goal, playing all 90 minutes in net for Kutztown.

FRI 9/3-SAT 9/4 - KUTZTOWN CLASSIC

FRI 9/3 - KU 3, SOUTHAMPTON 0 - Kutztown swept Southampton, 3-0, in the first match of the Kutztown Classic.  Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) led the Golden Bears with 13 kills, 12 digs and three service aces.  Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine Richland) had eight kills and two blocks.  Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) dished out 32 assists and had eight digs.  Heather Schreiber (Dunkirk, MD/Northern) added five kills and six digs.  Game scores were 30-16, 30-12 and 30-18. 

SAT 9/4 - KU 3, DOMINICAN 0 - Kutztown needed just three games to dispatch Dominican at the Kutztown Classic.  Game scores were 30-13, 30-12, and 30-16.  Herman had 33 assists, 12 digs and four aces to lead the Golden Bears.  Brandon notched 10 kills and two blocks.  Krystalee George (so. Alburtis/Emmaus) had six kills and three blocks and Shelby Bunting (so. Green Lane/Pennridge) had four kills and three blocks.  Kim Cifuni (fr. Springfield/Springfield) chipped in with five kills, eight digs and two aces.

KU 3, WILMINGTON (DE) 0 - Despite the 3-0 match score, Kutztown had its hands full in a win over Wilmington (DE) in the final match at the Kutztown Classic.  The Golden Bears largest margin of victory was three points, with game scores of 32-30, 40-38 and 30-27.  Sullivan paced the Golden Bears with 23 digs and 15 kills.  Brandon had 15 kills, six digs and a pair of blocks.  Herman handed out 53 assists and had 15 digs.  Dani Witherite (so. Pennsylvania Furnace/State College) finished the match with 13 kills and 11 digs and Nicole Biuso (fr. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) had 20 digs.  After the match, Herman and Sullivan were named to the All-Tournament team and Brandon was selected as the tournament MVP.
