Athlete of the Week 

Colleen Healey - Field Hockey
(jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North)  

         Colleen Healey, of the field hockey team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Healey led KU to a 3-0 week, including a thrilling PSAC victory over Indiana (PA).  Healey was one of three Golden Bears to score goals in a penalty stroke shootout to give KU a 1-0 win over IUP.  She also scored the game-winning goal against Catawba and netted a goal against Philadelphia.

       SAT 9/11 - MAROON & GOLD INVITATIONAL

       Women:  1st/6  - KU women placed first out of six teams in the Maroon & Gold Invitational 6K Run with 19 points.  Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) came in first overall with a time of 24:19.1.  KU's second-best finish was Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.), who placed fifth with a time of 25:31.3.   Madonna Patterson (so. Philadelphia/William Penn) finished seventh at 25:34.4.  Amanda Grant (sr. Whitehall/Whitehall) was in eighth place at 25:38.5, and Chelsea Thomas (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) placed ninth with a time of 25:43.6.

Men:  2nd/6 - The men finished second out of six teams in the Maroon & Gold Invitational 8K Run with a total of 52 points.  KU's top finisher was Keith Gruchacz (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), coming in sixth place with a time of 27:12.6.  In 12th place with a time of 27:44.10 was Gerard Ganey (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge).  Rounding out KU's top five finishers were Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) in 14th place at 27:53.11, Pat Coyne (so. Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan), in 15th place at 28:00.12, and in 17th place with a time of 28:12.13 was Pat Bone (fr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West).  Lock Haven swept the race for the team title, with the top five individual finishers.

FRI 9/10-SAT 9/11 - JOSH W. WESNER MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

FRI 9/10 - KU 3, PHILADELPHIA 2 - Laura Belfatti (so. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) scored on a penalty stroke with 7:12 left in the second half to break a 2-2 tie and propel Kutztown to the win in the opening game of the Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Tournament at Keystone Field.  Philadelphia took an early lead in the first half, but Jess Deveney (fr. Plymouth Meeting/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Colleen Healey (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) scored goals later in the half to put the Bears ahead.  Lauren McCabe (jr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) and Lauren Blain (jr. Marietta/Donegal) assisted the goals.  The Rams tied the score with 8:30 left in the first period.  Sam Flowers (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) played most of the second half in goal, but didn't face a shot thanks to KU's defense, led by Erin Livingston (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll).  Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) also saw time in the cage, racking up three saves in 40 minutes.

SAT 9/11 - KU 1, IUP 0 - In a game with no score through two overtime periods, Kutztown finally pulled it out in a shootout, 3-1.  KU's second victory of the Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Tournament stemmed from a shutout performance by goalkeeper Hershey, who netted 18 saves.  Belfatti, Amanda Behney (jr. Lyons/Kutztown), and Healey all scored in the shootout.

KU 2, CATAWBA 1 - KU rallied in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit, scoring twice en route to their second victory of the day.  They finished the Joshua W. Wesner Memorial Tournament 3-0.  Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) had an unassisted goal in the second half to tie the game at 1-1.  With ten minutes left, Healey scored the go-ahead goal, with the assist from Blain.

Last Week's Action

THU 9/9 - KU FALL INVITATIONAL (3rd/4) - KU placed third out of four teams as the Golden Bears hosted the KU Fall Inviational.  Andrea Ely (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) led the Golden Bears with a round of 79, good for third place and just two shots off the lead.  Holly Shubilla (so. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) tied for fifth with her score of 83.  Tristin Suzenski (so. Pottstown/St. Pius X) and Angela Petak (fr. Brockway/Brockway) tied for 13th with matching rounds of 95.  Kutztown's score of 352 was good for third place.  Lehigh won the team title with a score of 328.

WED 9/8 - KU 1, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 1 (2 OT) - Kutztown battled the Firebirds to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on a sloppy, rain-soaked Keystone Field.  UDC took the lead 12 minutes into the first half, but KU's Marc Benson (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) scored off a pass from Mike McCabe (fr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) to knot the score in the 20th minute.  The score went unchanged the rest of the way.  Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) had six saves in goal.

SAT 9/11 - Bridgeport 6, KU 2 - KU's men soccer team lost to Bridgeport 6-2 after a fast start by the Stags. Trailing 4-0, KU tried to rally in the second half around a pair of goals by Jim D'Angelo (so. Horsham/Hatsboro-Horsham) and McCabe.  Bridgeport later scored two unanswered goals to widen the deficit to four, sealing the victory.  Alan Hallman (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) led the Golden Bears with two assists.

WED 9/8 - WED 9/8 - WEST CHESTER 3, KU 1 - A late scoring flurry by the West Chester Golden Rams sank Kutztown on a rainy Keystone Field Wednesday afternoon.  Kutztown took the lead in the 12th minute when Chrissy Jack (Palermo, NJ/Ocean City) netted her first goal of the season off an assist from Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.).  At the 80 minute mark, The Rams tied the score, then broke the tie three minutes later and iced it with two minutes to play.  Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) had five saves in goal.

SUN 9/12 - East Stroudsburg 1, KU 0 - Kutztown dropped to 2-3-1 on the season and 0-2 in the PSAC with a 1-0 loss at ESU on Sunday.  The Warriors scored the game's only goal at 8:43.  Mitchell made six saves in 90 minutes for the Golden Bears.  KU was outshot 11-to-7.

TUE 9/7 - KU 3, Messiah 0 - Kutztown swept Messiah in three games, 30-19, 30-21 and 30-19.  Stocker led KU with eight kills and six blocks.  Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) and Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) each had a team-high nine kills.  Heather Schreiber (fr. Dunkirk, MD/Northern) added eight kills and Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) had 31 assists.

WED 9/8 - KU 3, LAFAYETTE 0 - Kutztown improved to 6-0 on the season with a win over Division I Lafayette.  The Golden Bears won 3-0, with game scores of 30-21, 30-24 and 30-26.  Brandon led the way for KU with 18 kills, eight digs and six blocks.  Herman added 46 assists, 11 digs and four kills.  Sullivan had 13 kills and 16 digs.  Dani Witherite (so. Pennsylvania Furnace/State College) ended the match with 12 kills and eight digs.  Nicole Biuso (fr. South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) chipped in with 20 digs.

FRI 9/10-SAT 9/11 - KUTZTOWN CHALLENGE

FRI 9/10 - KU 3, ADELPHI 1 - Kutztown dropped its first game of the season, but took away a 3-1 win against Adelphi in the opening match at the KU Challenge.  Game scores were 30-19, 30-22, 30-32 and 30-28.  Herman led the Golden Bears with nine kills, 48 assists and seven digs.  Brandon had 16 kills and four blocks.  Witherite added 11 kills and nine digs.  Biuso served six aces and led KU with 20 digs.  Sullivan had nine kills and 19 digs.  Shelby Bunting (so. Green Lane/Pennridge) added six kills and six blocks.

KU 3, ST. ROSE 0 - The Golden Bears needed just three games to dispatch St. Rose, 3-0, at the KU Challenge.  Game scores were 30-24, 30-22 and 30-14.  Witherite led Kutztown with 15 kills, 15 digs and four aces.  Brandon notched 14 kills and Sullivan had 13 kills and 16 digs.  Herman dished out 48 assists and had 10 digs.  Biuso picked up 16 digs in the match.

SAT 9/11 - KU 3, CLARION 2 - Herman and Brandon set KU records as the Golden Bears defeated Clarion, 3-2, in the semifinals of the KU Challenge.  Game scores were 27-30, 30-26, 25-30, 30-20 and 15-9.  Herman set the single-match assists record with 73 and Brandon's 27 kills also set a single-match record.  Herman finished the match with 18 digs, four aces and four blocks to go along with her 73 assists.  Brandon notched six digs and three blocks with her record-setting day.  Stocker had 12 kills and six blocks.  Sullivan added 15 kills and 16 digs and Biuso had 24 digs.

NEW YORK TECH 3, KU 2 - Kutztown dropped its first match of the year, falling in five games to New York Tech in the championship of the KU Challenge.  Game scores were 17-30, 30-27, 30-28, 25-30 and 13-15.  Herman and Brandon followed their record performances with two more big matches.  Brandon tallied 24 kills and 14 digs, while Herman dished out 62 assists - the second highest single match total at KU - and had 15 digs.  Witherite had 11 kills and 19 digs.  Biuso had 23 digs and Sullivan added 14.  After the match, Brandon and Herman were selected to the All-Tournament team.
