Sarah Brandon - Volleyball
(so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland)
Sarah Brandon, of the women's volleyball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Brandon led Kutztown to a 3-0 week, including PSAC East wins over West Chester and Millersville. Brandon tallied 53 kills and a .408 hitting percentage in 11 games. She had 16 kills against West Chester and 18 kills against Millersville. Brandon capped the week with 19 kills against non-conference foe Concordia.

THU 9/16 - SHIPPENSBURG 3, KU 0 - The Golden Bears had their season-opening seven game win streak halted with a 3-0 loss to PSAC foe Shippensburg. KU trailed 1-0 at the half before the Raiders added a pair of insurance goals in the second half. Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) played all 70 minutes in goal, making 13 saves and allowing all three scores.

THU 9/16 - at Lehigh Fall Invitational (4th/6) - Kutztown finished fourth in a six team field at the Lehigh Fall Invitational at Saucon Valley Country Club. Andrea Ely (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) was the top KU finisher, shooting an 87 on the par 72 course. She tied for 11th. Holly Shubilla (so. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) placed 14th with a round of 89 and Angela Petak (fr. Brockway/Brockway) tied for 15th with a 90. Tristen Suzenski (so. Pottstown/St. Pius X) placed 19th to round out the Kutztown scoring with a 91. Penn won the team title with a total of 326. The Golden Bears 357 placed them fourth. Penn had the individual winner, as well, with a round of 72.

WED 9/15 - KU 2, COLUMBIA UNION 1 (2OT) - Mike McCabe (fr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) scored with an assist from Alan Hallman (jr. Macungie/Emmaus) in the 108th minute to lift the Golden Bears to a 2-1 win over Columbia Union in double-overtime. KU got on the board just before halftime, with Matt Kade (fr. Quakertown/Quakertown) scoring his first career goal in the 45th minute. Marc Benson (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Brian Walter (jr. Feasterville/Neshaminy) each picked up assists on the score. Columbia Union tied it up in the second half, with a goal at 76 minutes. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation or the first overtime. It appeared the game may end in a tie before KU got control of the ball late and Hallman fed McCabe for the game-winner. Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) played the entire contest in net for Kutztown, making one save. KU outshot Columbia Union 23-to-2.
SAT 9/18 - KU 2, Shippensburg 1 - Walter had a goal and an assist as the Golden Bears took a 2-1 decision over Shippensburg. All three scores in the game came during the first eight minutes of action. Benson gave KU a 1-0 lead at the 1:06 mark, with Walter getting the assist. The Raiders tied the score less than a minute later. But Walter broke the tie at the eight minute mark for the game-winner off a throw-in from Dan Wilson (so. Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham). Jim D'Angelo (so. Horsham/Hatsboro-Horsham) took the throw-in and fed Walter for the decisive score. Sherman made four saves in net for Kutztown.

TUE 9/15 - KU 5, MANSFIELD 0 - Kutztown blanked visiting Mansfield, 5-0, to record its first PSAC victory of the season. Five different Golden Bears netted goals for KU. Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) started the scoring at the 14:30 mark of the first half. Erin Gallagher (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern), Julie Folsom (fr.Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) and Kate Downing (sr. Reading/Muhlenberg) added first half goals as KU led 4-0 at the break. Missy Dailey (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) scored early in the second half to cap the scoring. Jeannine Bria (jr. Warminster/William Tennent), Kelly Murdock (so. West Lawn/Wilson), Kim Kelty (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy), Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) and Nikki Marczak (sr. Levittown/Harry S. Truman) assisted KU's goals. Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) and Lesley Freer (fr. Honesdale/Honesdale) split time in goal for KU, sharing the shutout. Mitchell had one save in the first half, while Freer saved two shots in the second half.
SAT 9/18 - KU 0, Shippensburg 0 (2OT) - Kutztown and Shippensburg battled to a scoreless tie in a PSAC contest at Shippensburg. Mitchell played all 110 minutes in goal for KU, making four saves. The Golden Bears took 15 shots in the game, compared to 16 for the Raiders.

TUE 9/14 - KU 3, WEST CHESTER 0 - Kutztown got its PSAC East slate off to a good start, with a 3-0 win over West Chester at Keystone Arena. Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland - see Athlete of the Week) led the attack with 16 kills and three blocks. Dani Witherite (so. Pa. Furnace/State College) had 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) had 28 assists and six digs, while Shelby Bunting (so. Green Lane/Pennridge) had seven blocks.
SAT 9/18 - KU 3, Millersville 1 - The Golden Bears traveled to Millersville and picked up a PSAC East win in four games. Game scores were 30-27, 26-30, 30-16, and 30-23. Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) paced KU with 19 kills and 14 digs. Brandon added 18 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Herman handed out 43 assists to go along with 14 digs. Witherite had 10 kills and 16 digs, while Bunting added five blocks.
KU 3, Concordia 1 - KU improved to 12-1 on the season with a four-game win over Concordia in a match played at Millersville. Game scores were 30-28, 30-20, 21-30 and 30-27. Brandon topped the Golden Bear attack with 19 kills and four blocks. Witherite added 14 kills, with Heather Schreiber (fr. Dunkirk, MD/Northern) chipping in with nine. Herman paced KU with 46 assists.
