Molly Lare - W X Country
(so. Bethlehem/Liberty)
Molly Lare, of the women's cross country team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Lare won the Division II-III race at the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday. Her time of 22:16 on the 6K course was 18 seconds faster than her nearest competitor.

SAT 9/25 - Paul Short Invitational (Bethlehem, PA)
Women: 2nd/9 (68 points) - Molly Lare (so. Bethlehem/Liberty) won her second straight individual title, leading KU to a second place finish in the Division II & III scoring at the Paul Short Invitational. Lare completed the 6K in 22:16 for the win. The Golden Bears' next finisher was Chelsea Thomas (so. Sellersville/Pennridge), in 11th, with a time of 23:39. Danielle Mousley (sr. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.) finished just two seconds behind Thomas, in 12th place overall. Jackie Habe (fr. Mountainhome/Pocono Mountain) placed 20th with her time of 23:54 and Amanda Grant (sr. Whitehall/Whitehall) finished the KU scoring with a 26th place time of 24:17. The College of New Jersey won the team title with 62 points, just six ahead of KU.
Men: 7th/12 (200 points) - The Kutztown men also turned in a solid finish, with all five scorers finishing under 27 minutes. Keith Gruchacz (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) led the way with a time of 26:16 on the 8K run. He finished 25th. Gerard Ganey (so. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) was five places behind him with a time of 26:27. Pat Bone (fr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) placed 43rd in 26:45. Joe Haughey (so. Richboro/Council Rock South) covered the course in 26:52, good for 49th overall. Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) placed 53rd with his time of 26:56. Haverford took the team title with 56 points.

TUE 9/22 - KU 2, East Stroudsburg 0 - Nationally fifth-ranked KU scored two second half goals to grab a 2-0 shutout win over East Stroudsburg. Lauren Blain (Marietta/Donegal) scored the game-winner with 24:48 left in the contest, with an assist from Erin Livingston (sr. Philadelphia/Archbishop Carroll). With 7:41 remaining, Laura Belfatti (so. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) gave Kutztown some breathing room, with assists from Blain and Colleen Healey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). Trista Hershey (jr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) picked up the shutout, making eight saves in cage for the Golden Bears.
SAT 9/25 - BLOOMSBURG 2, KU 1 - In a battle of top-five teams, KU came up on the short end of a 2-1 double-overtime decision against No. 2 Bloomsburg. Kutztown struck first with an unassisted score from Belfatti at 48:09. Bloomsburg came back to tie the game with a score at 65:44, and then broke the tie in the second overtime at 88:37. Hershey made five saves, playing the entire contest in goal for the Golden Bears. A defensive struggle, Bloomsburg outshot KU, 8-7, in the game.

THU 9/23 - Gannon Invitational (at Lake Shore Country Club, Erie, PA. - par 72 - 5,900 yards) - Andrea Ely (fr. Oley/Oley Valley) shot a school-record 77 for the individual win as the Golden Bears placed third at the Gannon Invitational. Kutztown shot a 354 as a team. Ely's 77 was the single round record at KU for a par 72 course, breaking the old mark of 80. Holly Shubilla (so. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) placed third in the 33 player field with a round of 80. Angela Petak (fr. Brockway/Brockway) and Tristin Suzenski (so. Pottstown/St. Pius X) finished 24th and 25th, respectively. Petak shot a 98, one stroke better than Suzenski. Mercyhurst won the team crown in the six team tournament on a tie-breaker, with a total of 347.
FRI 9/24-SAT 9/25 - Mercyhurst Invitational (at Lakeview Country Club - par 73 - 5,900 yards) - The Golden Bears placed third in a seven team field at the Mercyhurst Invitational at the Lakeview Country Club. KU posted days of 348 and 342 for a two-day 690. Shubilla led KU with an 82-80-162, which tied her for third place overall. Ely shot an 82-84-166 and finished seventh. Suzenski notched an 89-92-181 for 23rd and Petak had a 95-87-192 to tie for 29th in the 45 player field. The University of Western Ontario won the team title with 325-340-665.

TUE 9/21 - KU 2, Molloy 1 - Brian Walter (jr. Feasterville/Neshaminy) had two assists as the Golden Bears won their third straight game, 2-1, against Molloy. Dan Wilson (so. Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham) scored the game-winner in the first half, at 30:43. In the second half, Marc Benson (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) added a score at 50:54. Molloy got on the board late, at 84:34, when the Lions converted on a penalty kick. Jason Sherman (jr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) made five saves in net for KU. Both teams managed 10 shots.
SAT 9/25 - KU 3, LOCK HAVEN 0 - Walter (jr. Feasterville/Neshaminy) had a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Lock Haven. Walter put KU on the board, with an assist from Wilson, at 29:00. He then assisted on goals by Jim D'Angelo (so. Horsham/Hatsboro-Horsham) at 43:00 and Wilson at 47:00. Sherman picked up his second shutout of the season, making five saves. The shutout brought Sherman's career total to 9.5, tying the school's career record. The Golden Bears outshot the Eagles 12-10 in the contest. The win was KU's fourth in a row.

TUE 9/22 - KU 3, PHILADELPHIA U. 1 - Kelly Murdock (so. West Lawn/Wilson) had a goal and an assist as KU picked up a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Philadelphia. PU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 19:00 mark. Kutztown then got a game-tying score from Mallary Kamen (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) with an assist from Murdock on a corner. Just three minutes later, at the 39:00 mark, Murdock scored the game-winner when she dribbled around the keeper and found the back of the net. In the second half, KU got an insurance goal at 47:00 when Jamie Miller (fr. Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) split the defense and found Lauren Tatro (sr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville), who capped the scoring for the Golden Bears. The Kutztown defense held PU to just two shots, while the KU offense managed 12 shots of their own. Nicki Mitchell (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth) made one save in net for Kutztown.

TUE 9/21 - Indiana (PA) 8, KU 1 - Kutztown dropped its season opener at Indiana (PA), 8-1. Jharna Nansi (so. Mumbai, INDIA) was Kutztown's only winner, taking #2 singles in straight sets.
SAT 9/25 - SUN 9/26 - ITA Regional Tournament (at Shippensburg, PA) - KU competed individually at the ITA Regional. In doubles action, in the 'A' Flight, the duo of Nansi and Priya Pachkawde (So. Nasik, INDIA) won their first round match, 8-3, before falling in the second round to the second-seed in the flight. In the 'B' Flight, Kristen Bodalski (so. Media/Cardinal O'Hara) and Vanessa Walsh (fr. Scranton/Bishop Hannan) dropped their first round match. In the 'A' Flight singles, Pachkawde fell in straight sets in her first round match. Jolie Falkowski (sr. Green Twp., NJ/Pope John XXIII) won her first round match in 'B' singles, 10-5, before falling in the second round. Bodalski and Walsh also competed in the 'B' Flight, losing first round matches.

TUE 9/21 - KU 3, Shippensburg 0 - The Golden Bears beat Shippensburg in three games, 30-26, 30-17 and 30-28. Dani Witherite (so. Pennsylvania Furnace/State College) paced KU with 17 kills. Sarah Brandon (so. Gibsonia/Pine Richland) filled up the stat sheet for 10 kills, six blocks and 11 digs. Jenn Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) recorded a team-high eight blocks and Katie Herman (so. Grove City/Grove City) handed out 31 assists. Nicole Biuso's (fr. Ward Melville/S. Setauket) 16 digs led the Golden Bears. Shannon Sullivan (jr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) had seven kills and 10 digs.
FRI 9/24-SAT 9/25 - PSAC Crossover at Slippery Rock
FRI 9/24 - KU 3, Slippery Rock 2 - KU took a 3-2 win over Slippery Rock in a PSAC Crossover match at Slippery Rock. Game scores were 32-30, 25-30, 22-30, 32-30, and 15-13. Herman notched 63 assists, the second-highest single-match total in school history. Brandon powered the Golden Bear attack with 23 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Sullivan posted 16 kills and nine digs, while Heather Schreiber (fr. Dunkirk, MD/Northern) matched her with 16 kills of her own. Kim Cifuni (fr. Springfield/Springfield) led KU with 19 digs, while Biuso added 18. Shelby Bunting (so. Green Lane/Pennridge) had seven kills in the win.
SAT 9/25 - California (PA) 3, KU 0 - Kutztown had its five-match win streak halted with a 3-0 loss to California (PA) in a PSAC Crossover match at Slippery Rock. Game scores were 30-24, 30-23 and 30-27. Brandon paced KU with 13 kills and 12 digs. Sullivan had 11 kills and nine digs. Herman led KU with 33 assists, while Biuso had 12 digs.
Clarion 3, KU 0 - Clarion avenged a loss to the Golden Bears earlier in the season, taking the PSAC Crossover match in three games. Game scores were 30-24, 33-31 and 30-20. Brandon and Schreiber each had a team-high 13 kills, while Schreiber also added 10 digs. Herman paced KU with 41 assists and Biuso notched a team-leading 23 digs. Herman also had 10 digs. Sullivan added 10 kills and 12 digs, while Jenn Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) had seven kills.
