Athlete of the Week

Xiomera Marin - W Soccer
(fr. West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) 

         Xiomera Marin, of the women's soccer team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Marin made her collegiate debut a memorable one, scoring the game-winning goal in the second overtime against Division II power Adelphi.

Last Week's Action

         FRI 8/26 - KU 3, Southern Connecticut State 0 - Kutztown University's Field Hockey team shut out Southern Connecticut State 3-0 to win its season opener at the Lady Raider Field Hockey Classic at Shippensburg University.  Amanda Behney (sr. Lyons/Kutztown) opened the scoring for Kutztown less than six minutes into the contest off of a penalty stroke. The game stayed 1-0 until early in the second half, when Mandi Turner (jr. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) scored unassisted at the 36:03 mark. Turner scored again to seal the contest with just over ten minutes to play, assisted by Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading). Kutztown had a total of 21 shots for the game while SCSU recorded 8.  Trista Hershey (sr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) played all 70 minutes in goal and recorded her first shut out of the season, making four saves.

SAT 8/27 -  KU 5, St. Michael's 1 - Kutztown Field Hockey continued its winning ways at the Lady Raiders Classic with its second win. Lindsey Bozarth (fr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored two goals and assisted two others to lead the Golden Bears.  Kutztown opened the scoring ten minutes into the game when Colleen Healey (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) scored off a pass from Bozarth. Six minutes later, Courtney Geibel (fr. Mifflintown/Juniata) added to the score, also assisted by Bozarth.  Kutztown scored three goals in seven minutes in the second half to seal its victory. Bozarth scored unassisted to open the second-half scoring. Behney then scored on a penalty stroke. Bozarth scored her second goal of the contest, assisted by Kline, to put Kutztown up 5-0.  Hershey played all 70 minutes for the Golden Bears, with one save.

Last Week's Action

FRI 8/26 -  New York Tech 3, KU 1 - New York Tech recorded a pair of second-half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie and defeat Kutztown, 3-1, in the 2005 season opener for both men's soccer teams at the Shippensburg University Classic.  Down 1-0 late in the first half, freshman Bryce Slattery (fr. Williamsport/Williamsport) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from Chris Capone (so. Southold, NY/Southold) at the 41:23 mark.  In the 67th minute, New York Tech was credited with a goal when the ball went in KU's net off a Golden Bear defender.  The NYT Bears iced the game with another goal at the 84:53 mark. Jason Sherman (sr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) notched five saves in goal for the Golden Bears, who fall to 0-1.

SUN 8/28 - C.W. Post 4, KU 1 - C.W. Post score four unanswered goals in the second half to hand Kutztown its second straight loss at Shippensburg University's Raider Classic Sunday.  KU's Marc Benson (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) scored the game's first goal off a corner kick from Jacob Ottinger (fr. Schnecksville/Parkland) just over two minutes into the second half.  The lead stood for 10 minutes before Post tied the score.  Less than 30 seconds later, the Pioneers took the lead.  Post iced the game with two goals in the 66th and 70th minute.  Sherman had four saves and Ryan Kratz (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) added three as the pair split time in goal for KU.

Last Week's Action

SAT 8/27 - KU 2, Adelphi 1 (2 OT) - Kutztown won its season opener, 2-1 in double overtime, against Adelphi at Keystone Field. The win avenged KU's 4-0 loss to Adelphi in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Division II Playoffs.  Last year, Adelphi appeared in the NCAA Championship game. Xiomera Marin (fr. West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) scored off an assist from Julie Folsom (so. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional) to win the game in the 102nd minute.  Kim Kelty (so. Levittown/Neshaminy), assisted by Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson), opened the game with the first goal just 3:45 into the first half. It stayed 1-0 until just over twelve minutes to play in the second half when Adelphi tied it.  Lesley Freer (so. Honesdale/Honesdale) and Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) combined in net for the Golden Bears for the first win of the season.
