Julie Karaszkiewicz - W X Country
(fr. Boothwyn/Garnet Valley) 

         Julie Karaszkiewicz, of the women's cross country team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Karaszkiewicz led Kutztown to a third-place finish at the NCAA East Regional Championship and a berth in the NCAA National Championship.  She placed 11th with a time of 22:20 on the 6K race to earn All-Region honors.

         SAT 11/5 - at NCAA East Regional (at Lock Haven)

         Men: 12th/25 - The KU men finished in 12th place with 290 points at the NCAA East Regional at Lock Haven. Pat Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) led KU, finishing in 23rd place with a time of 32:47 in the 10K race. Dan Wilde (jr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff)  finished in 50th (33:51) and Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) finished 58th (34:06). Rounding out the top runners for the men were Joe Haughey (jr. Richboro/Council Rock South) in 70th (34:33), Zach Miller (fr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) in 89th (35:21) and Pat McKeever (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) in 93rd (35:37). Edinboro won the team title with 59 points, while Lock Haven placed second with 69 points and Shippensburg was third with 90 points.

Women: 3rd/26 - Julie Karaszkiewicz (fr. Boothwyn/Garnet Valley) and Joanna Horstmann (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) earned All-Region honors while leading the women to a third place finish at the NCAA East Regionals. Edinboro came in first with 33 points with Indiana (PA) in second with 98 points. KU's third place finish, with 105 points, secured a berth at the NCAA Championships. Karaszkiewicz finished in 11th with a time of 22:20 and was the first freshman to finish. Horstmann finished 15th overall as she ran 22:34 in the 6K race. Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge) finished in 17th (22:41), Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) came in 24th (22:54) and Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) was 38th (23:14). Rounding out the top seven for KU were Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside) in 53rd (23:41) and Erica Kabbeko (so. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) in 106th (25:44).

Last Week's Action

TUE 11/1 - KUTZTOWN 3, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 - Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson) had a goal and an assist to lead KU to a 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg in a PSAC quarterfinal game. Kutztown took a 1-0 lead late in the first half, when Ann Fink (so. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) scored off a cross from Allyson Dattola (so. Langhorne/Neshaminy) 40:51 into the game. The Golden Bears got some insurance with 73:20 off the clock when Jeannine Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) split two defenders and found Murdock, who netted the goal. KU put the game out of reach when Shelby Varone (jr. Bernville/Tulpehocken) took a corner kick from Murdock, and found the corner of the net from well outside the goalkeepers box. Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) made two saves in goal for KU.  The Golden Bear defense limited ESU to just five shots in the game.

FRI 11/4 - Kutztown 1, West Chester 0 - Kutztown broke West Chester's home scoreless streak of 1,039 minutes and 21-game unbeaten streak in the PSAC semifinal. KU defeated WCU, 1-0, with Cheyenne Brunner (fr. Sunbury/Shikellamy) scoring the lone goal for the Golden Bears. Rodweller had one save en route to the shutout. Defense was key keeping each team low on shots. Kutztown managed four while West Chester had one.

SUN 11/6 - SLIPPERY ROCK 1, KUTZTOWN 0 - Slippery Rock scored the game's only goal early in the second half to lift it to a 1-0 win over Kutztown in the PSAC Women's Soccer Championship. SRU took the lead after a corner kick at the 47:24 mark. The Golden Bears had just one solid shot at the goal after falling behind. Bria's direct kick with under 10 minutes to play caught the top of the crossbar and went out of bounds. KU keeper Rodweller had seven stops.

Women's Volleyball (21-11, 7-3 PSAC East)

Last Week's Action

TUE 11/1 - KUTZTOWN 3, EAST STROUDSBURG 0 - KU defeated East Stroudsburg, 3-0. Game scores were 30-23, 30-25, 30-15. Dani Witherite (jr. PA Furnace/State College) became the third player in school history to reach 1,000 career digs, finishing with exactly 1,000.  She had nine digs in the match, along with eight kills. Shannon Sullivan (sr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove), playing in her final regular season match at Keystone Arena, had four kills and 14 digs.  KU was led by Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland), who had 12 kills and four blocks.  Shelby Bunting (jr. Green Lane/Pennridge) added eight blocks, while Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) had 28 assists and seven digs.

SAT 11/5 - Kutztown 3, Millersville 1 - Kutztown clinched the regular-season PSAC Eastern Division title, and the #1 seed in the PSAC playoffs with its win over Millersville, 3-1. The Marauders took the first game 30-17. Kutztown came back to win the second game, 30-25. Kutztown was down in the third game, 25-28, but rallied back to take a 29-28 lead. Millersville and Kutztown battled back and forth before a Brandon kill gave KU the 36-34 win. KU then took the fourth and deciding game, 30-25. Brandon finished the match with 21 kills, while contributing three blocks. Witherite notched 15 kills, 20 digs and three blocks. Kinney passed out 48 assists and had 20 digs. Sullivan led the team with 22 digs while Nicole Buiso (so. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) chipped in with 18 digs. Steph Biester (so. Lansdowne/Arch. Pendergast) also contributed with 13 digs.
