Athlete of the Week

Kerstin Kloeffer - W Tennis
(sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) 

         Kerstin Kloeffer, of the women's tennis team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Kloeffer became the first KU women's tennis player to win the ITA East Regional singles title when she defeated teammate Magaly Peter in the finals.  She advances to the ITA Small College Championship in Florida.

       SAT 10/1 - at Paul Short Inv. (at Lehigh)

       M:2nd/11-The men finished in second place in the Men's Open College race behind first place Cortland and in front of third place Ithaca. David Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) was the top runner for KU finishing in seventh with a time of 26:02.2. This was the fastest time in six years posted by a KU runner in the Paul Short 8K course. Kyle Keehn (fr. Secane/Ridley) was 12th with a time of 26:27.0. Keehn posted KU's fastest time for a freshman 8K. Pat McKeever (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park)  was 16th in 26:43.8. Dan Wilde (jr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) (26:50.2), Pat Coyne (jr. Philadelphia/Archbiship Ryan) (26:53.4) and Mark Simpson (so. Malvern/Monsignor Bonner) (27:17.8) rounded out the top runners in 21st, 22nd and 33rd for KU.

W:36th/47- The women placed 36th at the Women's Collegiate Invitational behind University of Tampa and University of Delaware, who tied for 34th. UNC-Wilmington was behind KU in 37th. Columbia took first with Georgetown and Tennessee rounding out the top three. The top runner for KU was Joanna Horstmann (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) in 149th with 22:48.7 in the Division I dominated race. Julie Karaszkiewicz (fr. Boothwyn/Garnet Valley) was close behind with 22:56.0 for 162nd. Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge) (23:04.9) and Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) (23:05.9) came in 181st and 183rd. Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside)  (23:12.1), Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) (23:29.9) and Erica Kabbeko (so. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) (24:18.5) rounded out KU's top seven in 193rd, 220th and 269th, respectively.

Last Week's Action

THU 9/29 - KUTZTOWN 4, MILLERSVILLE 0 - Kelley Healey (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Lindsey Bozarth (fr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored a pair of goals each to lead Kutztown to a 4-0 shutout over Millersville in PSAC field hockey action. Healey opened the scoring just over five minutes into the first half, off a pass from Lauren McCabe (sr. Shohola/Delaware Valley).  Bozarth put her first score in the cage with 4:57 left in the first off a penalty corner pass from Colleen Healey (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). In the second half, Bozarth made it 3-0 with 27:52 remaining off an assist by Kelley Healey, who capped the scoring with 23:49 left, unassisted. KU goalkeeper Trista Hershey (sr. Fredricksburg/Tulpehocken) had six saves in goal for her fifth shutout of the season.  She has not allowed a goal in nearly 224 minutes of play.

SAT 10/1 - KUTZTOWN 4, MANSFIELD 1 - Kutztown defeated Mansfield, 4-1. KU was down early in the game when Mansfield notched the game's first goal mid-way through the first half. Kutztown came back strong, scoring two goals before the half closed. Lauren McCabe (sr. Shohola/Deleware Valley) recorded the Golden Bears first goal five minutes after Mansfield scored. Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) tallied KU's second goal with less than eight minutes left in the half. The Healey sisters, Colleen and Kelley, provided the insurance goals for the Golden Bears later in the second half. Kelley Healey deflected a laser of a shot by Laura Belfatti (jr. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic). Colleen Healey put the game out of reach with a goal 2:30 after her sister's goal. Hershey had seven saves in goal.

Last Week's Action

FRI 9/30 - 1st/8, Mount St. Mary's Inv.- KU traveled to Thurmont, MD to compete in the Mount St. Mary's Fall Invitational. KU came away in first place shooting 332. Robert Morris came in second with 340 and Lehigh had 343 for third. Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) was the top golfer for the Golden Bears. Adams shot 80 on the Par 72 course, good for third place. Angela Petak (so. Brockway/Brockway) shot an 83 to tie for sixth and Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) tied for ninth with an 84. Lauren Foulke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) rounded out the top four in 11th with a score of 85.

Men's Soccer (3-8-1, 3-5-1 PSAC)

Last Week's Action

TUE 9/27 - Millersville 4, Kutztown 0 - Millersville defeated Kutztown, 4-0, in a PSAC men's soccer match up. The Marauders netted a pair of goals in each half.  MU out shot The Golden Bears 15-7 in the contest.

SAT 10/1 - KUTZTOWN 1, WEST CHESTER 0 - The Golden Bears defeated West Chester, 1-0, in PSAC action. KU scored the only goal in the match late in the second half. With eight minutes left in the game, KU was faced with the challenge of playing a man short after a red card was handed out. KU scored off a corner kick where Rick Zimmerer (jr. Franklin/Wallkill Valley) set up freshman Greg Sassaman (r-fr. Blairstown, NJ/North Warren). Sassaman fought off two Golden Rams defenders to head the ball into the upper right corner of the net. Goalkeeper Jason Sherman (sr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) had seven saves for the shutout.

Last Week's Action

TUE 9/27 - Kutztown 1, Millersville 0 - Kristen Kentner (so. Allentown/Parkland) scored the game's only goal off a rebound of Kim Kelty's (so. Levittwon/Neshaminy) shot to lift Kutztown to a 1-0 PSAC Eastern Division victory over Millersville. Kelty's shot hit the crossbar, and Kentner booted it home at the 76:27 mark.  KU goalkeeper Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) made the goal stand up, with three saves in the shutout.  KU out shot the Marauders 13-6.

SAT 10/1 - WEST CHESTER 3, KUTZTOWN 1 - KU fell to undefeated West Chester, 3-1 in the PSAC East match up. West Chester scored all three of its goals in the first half. Kutztown managed to score its lone goal 50 seconds into the second half. Midfielder Brie Dougher (fr. Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee) directed a shot to the lower right corner of the net.

SAT 10/1-3  -  ITA Regional (at Bloomsburg)

Kutztown's duo of Harsh Sharma (jr. Calbutta, India) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, Austria) won the ITA  Regional A Doubles Title by defeating Wojchiech Stucklik and Andrey Vesiley from Queens College, 6-2, 6-3. They will travel to Ft. Myers, FL to compete in the ITA Small College Championships.

Last Week's Action

SAT 9/24 -26 -  ITA Regional (at Bloomsburg)

  Kutztown's Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) defeated teammate Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) in three sets to win the ITA Regional A Singles title at Keystone Courts. Kloeffer won the first set, 6-3, before Peter came back to win set two, 7-5.  Kloeffer then finished off the match with a 6-3 win in the third set. The match took place at Kutztown after Monday's final day at Bloomsburg was delayed by rain. Kloeffer, the first KU women's tennis player to win the regional singles title, advances to the ITA Small College Championships in Ft. Myers, FL.

Last Week's Action

TUE 9/27 - Kutztown 3, East Stroudsburg 0 - Kutztown rolled to a 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg for a key PSAC Eastern Division victory. Kutztown cruised to a 30-10 win in game one, then picked up 30-24 and 30-27 victories in the next two games to complete the sweep. Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) had 16 kills to lead KU.  Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) had 38 assists and eight digs, while Erin Waters (so. Waymart/Western Wayne) notched four kills and seven blocks.  Dani Witherite (jr. PA Furnace/State College) rounded out the leaders with seven kills and four blocks.

THU 9/29 - KUTZTOWN 3, BOWIE STATE 0 - Kutztown used a balanced attack to defeat non-conference foe Bowie State, 3-0.  Game scores were 30-12, 30-21 and 30-26. Witherite led the Bears with 10 kills and six digs.  Brandon had six kills in just the first game, while Kimberly Cifuni (so. Springfield/Springfield) had eight kills and five digs and Waters added six kills and three blocks. Kinney had 10 assists in game one. Amanda Schoemaker (fr. Macungie/Emmaus) had nine assists and nine digs in games two and three.
