Athlete of the Week

Ashley Smith W. Soccer
(jr. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.)  

         Ashley Smith, of the women's soccer team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Smith scored two goals against Shippensburg to give KU the win. She also assisted on the insurance goal against East Stroudsburg.

       TUE 10/4 - Bloomsburg 3, Kutztown 2 - Bloomsburg broke a 2-2 tie late in the second half to edge Kutztown in a hard-fought PSAC field hockey battle. The Huskies stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, scoring two goals in the final 11 minutes. KU bounced back after halftime. With 27:28 left, Lauren McCabe (sr. Shohola/Delaware Valley) made it 2-1. Whitney Stum (fr. Landisburg/West Perry) tied it with 20:24 to play, off an assist by Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading).  The assist was Kline's 11th of the season, breaking the previous single-season record held by four other players. The score remained tied until Bloomsburg put the winning goal in the cage with 3:04 to play. Goalkeeper Trista Hershey (sr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken) had three saves in the game, allowing two goals in 70:00, but she didn't play the entire game.  Backup Sam Flowers (so. Souderton/Souderton) came in to face the penalty stroke but was unable to keep BU from converting.   Bloomsburg's three goals were the most allowed by KU this season, and just the second time a team has scored more than one goal against the Golden Bears.

Last Week's Action

WED 10/5 - East Stroudsburg 3, Kutztown 1 - Kutztown fell to PSAC foe East Stroudsburg, 3-1. Trailing 2-0, KU got on the board with 9:53 left in the game when Bryce Slattery (fr. Williamsport/Williamsport) scored on a penalty kick.  The Warriors iced the game with under a minute to play with an insurance goal. Jason Sherman (sr Chalfont/Central Bucks East) had nine saves for Kutztown.

SAT 10/8 - Shippensburg 1, Kutztown 0 - Shippensburg netted the game's only goal midway through the first half to sink Kutztown on a rain-soaked soccer field. The goal came off a corner kick 23:22 into the game. The goal stood up, despite KU's 27 shots in the contest. Sherman had four saves.

WED 10/5 - Kutztown 3, East Stroudsburg 1 - Kutztown's Kim Kelty (so. Levittown/Neshaminy) scored 15 minutes into the first half to give the Golden Bears the start they needed to beat East Stroudsburg, 3-1. Kelty, off a pass from Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson), scored the only goal in the first half. ESU came out with a jump in the second half tying the game ten minutes in. Allyson Dattola (so. Langhorne/Neshaminy) scored off a direct kick to give Kutztown the lead for good. Jackie Toutkoushian (fr. Doylestown/Central Bucks East) scored an insurance goal from Ashley Smith (jr. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) in the 79th minutes to seal the victory. Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) had two saves.

SAT 10/8 - Kutztown 2, Shippensburg 1 - Smith scored two goals to lead Kutztown to a 2-1 win over PSAC Eastern Division foe Shippensburg. Smith opened the scoring 20:14 into the first half off an assist from Erin Gallagher (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern). After the Raiders tied the game seven minutes into the second half, Smith netted the game winner off a double assist from Kelty and Jeannine Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) at the 62:32 mark. Rodweller had three saves in goal for KU.

SUN 10/9 - Kutztown 5, Slippery Rock 0 - KU won its first match of the season against Slippery Rock 5-0. Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) won at first doubles, 8-1. Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte, BRAZIL) and Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad, INDIA) won second doubles, 8-1. Lukas Beman (jr. Woodend, AUSTRALIA) and Ilja Semjonovs (sr. Liepaja, LATVIA) won third doubles, 8-0. Sharma won at first in singles, 6-0, 6-4, while Labitsch won second singles 6-2, 6-2.

SUN 10/9 - Kutztown 5, Slippery Rock 2 - KU won against Slippery Rock, 5-2. Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) and Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, FRANCE) won at second doubles, 8-3. First and sixth singles did not finish, but KU took second through fifth for the win. Peter won at second 3-6, 6-3, 6-6. Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) won, 6-4, 6-4 at third. Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) won at fourth, 6-3, 6-1 and Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Govenor Mifflen) won at fifth, 6-0, 6-1.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/4 - KUTZTOWN 3, MILLERSVILLE 1 - KU's junior Sarah Brandon (Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) set the school's career kills record in KU's 3-1 win over Millersville. Brandon, an outside hitter, had 26 kills in the match, bringing her career total to 1,153.  She passed the previous record holder, Missy Klein, who had 1,144 kills from 1999-2002.  Brandon's record-breaking kill came near the end of the third game. Millersville won the first game, 30-28, and had game point, 29-26, in game two before KU stormed back to win 31-29.  KU then rattled off consecutive 30-25 wins in games three and four to clinch the victory. Brandon added 19 digs.  Other leaders for KU included Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield), who had 51 assists and 25 digs.  Dani Witherite  (jr. PA Furnace/State College) had nine kills and 30 digs.  Nicole Biuso (so. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) added 21 digs, while Shelby Bunting (jr. Green Lane/Pennridge) notched 10 kills.  

FRI 10/7-SAT 10/8 - at PSAC crossovers (at Edinboro)

FRI 10/7 - Kutztown 3, Clarion 1 - The Golden Bears beat Clarion, 3-1, in the first match in the PSAC crossover at Edinboro. Clarion won the first game 20-30, but KU came back to take the next three, 30-25, 30-21, 30-16. Brandon led the team with 19 kills and added four blocks. Witherite contributed with 18 kills while Shannon Sullivan (sr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) had 10 kills and Bunting notched eight kills. Witherite and Sullivan also had 15 digs each. Buiso had 24 digs and two service aces. Kinney led with 47 assists.

SAT 10/8 - Edinboro 3, Kutztown 2 - KU lost a close one in the second match of the PSAC crossover to Edinboro, 3-2. The game scores went back and forth with the Golden Bears winning the first and third games, 30-16 and 30-27, while Edinboro took the second and fourth games, 27-30 and 28-30. The fifth game was close, but Edinboro prevailed, 13-15. Brandon led KU in kills with 24. She also had five blocks. Kinney once again led in assists with 50 and had 12 digs. Witherite contributed with 12 kills and 10 digs. Sullivan and Bunting each had 10 kills. Witherite and Bunting also had four blocks each.

SAT 10/8 - Lock Haven 3, Kutztown 0 - KU finished the PSAC crossover with a loss to Lock Haven in three games, 20-30, 19-30, 27-30. Brandon was held to six kills. Witherite had eight kills. Brandon also had four blocks, while Bunting had three. Buiso contributed with 18 digs and Kinney had 22 assists.
