Julie Karaszkiewicz, of the women's cross country team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Karaszkiewicz led Kutztown to the team title at the DeSales Invitational, placing second overall with a time of 24:53 on the 6K course.

SAT 10/15 - at DeSales Invitational
Men: 6th/23: The Men's cross country team finished in sixth place out of 23 schools with 140 points at the DeSales Invitational. Frostburg State finished first with 67 points, followed by East Stroudsburg (85) and Swarthmore (104). Muhlenberg edged KU for fifth place with 124 points, while the Bears finished ahead of Susquehanna, which had 194. Pat Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) was KU's top runner finishing in third place overall with a time of 27:24 in the 8K run. Dan Wilde (jr. Leymone/Cedar Cliff) was second for KU in 15th with a time of 28:53. Joe Haughey (jr. Richboro/Council Rock South) finished 33rd in 28:54, John Pyne (fr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) was 46th in 29:11 and Pat Coyne (jr. Philadelphia/Archbiship Ryan) was 50th in 29:17.
Women: 1st/23: The Women finished in first place at the DeSales Invitational with 33 points. Connecticut College was right behind KU with 38 points. Mary Washington was a distant third (113). The top runner for KU was Julie Karaszkiewicz (fr. Boothwyn/Garnet Valley), who finished second overall with a time of 24:53 on the 6K course. Joanna Horstmann (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) was third in 25:01. In eighth and ninth were Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside), 25:40, and Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge), 26:01. Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) came in 11th with a time of 26:11.

Last Week's Action
WED 10/12 - Shippensburg 3, Kutztown 1 - KU lost to undefeated Shippensburg, 3-1. Shippensburg opened the scoring nine minutes into the game. Lindsey Bozarth (fr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored KU's only goal ten minutes later to tie the game, 1-1. Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) had the assist to add to her record breaking season. Shippensburg would score again in the half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Shippensburg scored its third goal midway though the second half to seal the victory.

SAT 10/15 - PSAC Championships
8th/8: The Golden Bears finished in eighth place against mostly men's teams at the PSAC Championships. Clarion was first with 604, IUP was second with 608 and West Chester came in third with 612. KU was edged by California (PA)'s women's team, the only other non-men's team, 689-691, for seventh place. Angela Petak (so. Brockway/Brockway) led the Golden Bears with scores of 80-80-160 for 23rd place. Tristin Suzenski (jr. Pottstown/St. Pius X) had a two day total of 90-87-177. Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) was third for KU with scores of 93-85-178. Lauren Folke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) finished 95-85-180 and Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) shot 91-90-181.

Last Week's Action
TUE 10/11 - CALIFORNIA (PA) 4, KUTZTOWN 1 - Despite having 20 shots in the game, KU dropped a 4-1 decision. KU's lone goal was scored by Charlie Kulp (fr. State Collge/State College) in the 75th minute. California (PA) came out fast and scored three goals in the first half. The Vulcans then came out on the second half and scored five minutes in for the 4-1 win.
SAT 10/15 - BLOOMSBURG 5, KUTZTOWN 0 - The Huskies were too much for the Golden Bears as they lost to Bloomsburg, 5-0. Bloomsburg scored one goal in the first half before coming out on fire after halftime.

Women's Soccer (9-6, 7-3 PSAC East)
Last Week's Action
SAT 10/15 - KUTZTOWN 3, BLOOMSBURG 0 - Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson) scored a pair of goals and Kristen Kentner (so. Allentown/Parkland) dished out two assists to lift KU over Bloomsburg, 3-0, and clinch a spot in the PSAC Playoffs. Murdock scored ten minutes into the game off an assist from Ashley Smith (jr. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. The game remained 1-0 until Murdock scored her second goal off an assist from Kentner in the 65th minute. Smith scored a goal soon after, off another assist by Kentner, to seal the 3-0 victory. Nicole Rodweller started the game and had three saves, while Lesley Freer came in for part of the second half and had two saves, to combine for the shutout.

10/13-16 at ITA Championships - Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta, India) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur, Austria) finished in fourth place at the ITA Small College Championships in Fort Myers, FL. Sharma and Labitsch won in the first round, before losing in the semifinals and dropping the third-place match.

TUE 10/11 - Kutztown 3, Cheyney 0 - KU beat Cheyney, 3-0. Game scores were 30-4, 30-6, 30-6. Kimberly Cifuni (so. Springfield/Springfield) had 10 kills and 8 digs. Brittany Hoke (fr. Chadds Ford/Unionville) notched 10 kills and 10 aces, while Ashlie Molloy (fr. Allentown/Parkland) had 5 assists and 4 aces. Amanda Schoemaker (fr. Macungie/Emmaus) recorded 13 assists, and Krystalee George (jr. Alburtis/Emmaus) tallied 5 kills.
WED 10/12 - Kutztown 3, Philadelphia 0 - The Golden Bears beat the University of the Sciences in three games, 30-18, 30-24, 30-18. Shelby Bunting (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) led the team with 11 kills and nine blocks. Dani Witherite (jr. PA Furnace/State College) notched eight kills and 14 digs. Tara Galloway (so. Nazareth/Nazareth) had seven kills, while Krystalee George (jr. Alburtis/Emmaus) contributed six kills. Shannon Sullivan (sr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) was in the mix with seven kills as well as nine digs. Nicole Buiso (so. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) had 17 digs and Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) dished out 37 assists.
FRI 10/14-SAT 10/15 - at Lock Haven Classic
FRI 10/14-Kutztown 3, Mercy College 0 - Kutztown opened play at the Lock Haven Classic with a 3-0 win over Mercy College. Game scores were 30-19, 30-16 and 30-24. Mercy entered the game as the #3 ranked team in the Northeast Region. Brandon had 16 kills and four blocks. Witherite added 15 kills and 11 digs, while Biuso chipped in 15 digs. Bunting notched seven kills and four blocks, while Kinney notched 35 assists.
Dowling College 3, Kutztown 2 - Dowling College defeated Kutztown, 3-2. Game scores were 30-19, 25-30, 30-22, 26-30, 15-10. Brandon led KU with 23 kills and four blocks. Witherite had 12 kills and 15 digs. Kinney tallied 47 assists and 15 digs. Dowling is the #1 team in the Northeast Region.
SAT 10/15-Kutztown 3, St. Anselm 0 - KU opened the second day at the Lock Haven Classic with a three game win over St. Anselm, 30-9, 30-23, 30-20. Brandon led with 14 kills and added 3 blocks. Witherite notched eight kills, nine digs and three aces. Waters led with eight blocks and added 10 kills. Hoke chipped in with four kills and nine digs. Kinney had 23 assists.
Mt. Olive 3, Kutztown 2 - Kutztown lost the first game of the match 9-30, but came back in the second to win 30-27. It went back and forth in the next two games each team winning one more, 26-30 and 30-27, to force a game five. KU lost the momentum and lost game five, 8-15. Brandon had 25 kills while adding three blocks. Witherite contributed with 12 kills and 15 digs. Bunting notched 10 kills while Buiso chipped in 14 digs. Waters had nine blocks. Kinney tallied 41 assists.
