Athlete of the Week

Joanna Horstmann, W X Country
(fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) 

         Joanna Horstmann, of the women's cross country team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Horstmann led the Golden Bears to a third-place team finish at the PSAC Championships on Saturday.  She placed sixth on the 6K course with a time of 22:48 to earn All-PSAC honors.  Horstmann was the top freshman finisher in the race.

         SAT 10/29 - at PSAC Championships (Slippery Rock, PA)

         M:10th/14 - Pat Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) led the KU men, finishing in 25th place with a time of 26:32 in the 8K race. Dan Wilde (jr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) finished in 46th (27:17) and Dave Tidey (so. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) finished 52nd (27:34). Rounding out the top seven for the men were Joe Haughey (jr. Richboro/Council Rock South) in 59th (27:48), John Pyne (fr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) in 67th (28:06), Pat McKeever (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) in 71st (28:19) and Zach Miller (fr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) in 76th (28:34). Lock Haven came in first in the men's 8K run with 63 points. Edinboro placed second with 70 points and Shippensburg was third with 110 points. Millersville was ahead of KU with 224 points for ninth, KU had 249 points for tenth. Mansfield was eleventh with 253 points.

W:3rd/13 - Joanna Horstmann (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) and Julie Karaszkiewicz (fr. Boothwyn/Garnet Valley) earned All-PSAC honors while leading the women to a third place finish at the PSAC Championships. Horstmann finished sixth overall and was the first freshman to finish, running a 22:48 in the 6K race. Karaszkiewicz finished 13th, with a time of 22:59. Chelsea Thomas (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge) finished 24th (23:37) and Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside) came in 28th (23:43). Rounding out the top seven for KU were Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) in 29th (23:44), Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn) in 31st (23:47) and Hailey Dell (fr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) in 75th (26:02). Edinboro placed first in the women's 6k with 34 points. Bloomsburg was second with 97 points while KU was third with 100 points. Indiana (PA) was fourth with 113 points and Mansfield was fifth with 130 points.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/25 - Shippensburg 6, Kutztown 2 - Top ranked Shippensburg defeated Kutztown, 6-2, in a PSAC Semifinal. The Lady Raiders scored twice in the first five minutes to jump out to an early lead. KU's Lindsey Bozarth (fr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) scored off a pass from Mandi Turner (fr. Sumneytown/Upper Perkiomen) with 6:46 off the clock to cut the lead in half, but the Raiders scored twice more to make it 4-1 21:09 into the game. Turner scored a goal of her own, with an assist by Kelley Healey (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), to make it 4-2 with just over five minutes left in the first half.  The Lady Raiders, however, iced the game with two goals midway through the second half.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/25 - Lock Haven 6, Kutztown 2 - Lock Haven scored three goals in each half to defeat Kutztown, 6-2. Marc Benson (sr. Boyertown/Boyertwon) scored both goals for KU. LHU took the lead just 1:30 into the game, and added goals in the 17th and 27th minute for the 3-0 halftime lead. Benson scored on a penalty kick at the 62:25 mark, but LHU added two more goals over the next seven minutes to put it out of reach.  Benson scored off a pass from Greg Sassaman (r-fr. Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) in the 72nd minute for KU's second goal. Ryan Kratz (so. Boyertown/Boyertown) had six saves in goal for the Golden Bears.

SAT 10/29 - KUTZTOWN 3, MILLERSVILLE 0 - KU and Millersville played a scoreless first half before Kutztown came out on fire in the second half, scoring three goals in 12 minutes. Sassaman started the scoring at the 50 minute mark. Bryce Slattery (fr. Williamsport/Williamsport) scored KU's second goal, off an assist from Sassaman, to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute. Benson scored the third goal, in his final game at KU, to seal the victory in the 62nd minute. Senior goalkeeper Jason Sherman (Chalfont/Central Bucks East) earned a shutout in his last game as a Golden Bear, recording four saves. Also playing his last game, senior back Brian Walter (Feasterville/Neshaminy) helped hold Millersville to eight shots in the game.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/25 - Kutztown 2, Lock Haven 0 - Kutztown scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Lock Haven, 2-0, in PSAC crossover action. Cheyenne Brunner (fr. Sunbury/Shikellamy) scored the game's first goal off an assist by Kim Kelty (so. Levittown/Neshaminy) at the 55:30 mark.  Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson) made it 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 59th minute. Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) had three saves en route to her fourth-straight shutout.

SAT 10/29 - KUTZTOWN 2, MILLERSVILLE 2 - Kutztown and Millersville battled back and forth to end in a 2-2 tie. Millersville opened the scoring in the 36th minute, but KU came right back one minute later when Murdock scored off a pass from Kelty. Millersville took the lead once again in the 61st minute, but Brunner scored in the 68th minute, off an assist from Murdock, to tie the game. The teams played through two scoreless overtimes.

Last Week's Action

TUE 10/25 - KUTZTOWN 3, WEST CHESTER 0 - Kutztown dismantled visiting West Chester in PSAC East action, 3-0.  Game scores were 30-15, 30-25 and 30-21. KU jumped out to big leads and cruised to easy victories in games one and two.  The Golden Bears, however fell behind 10-4 in game three, before erupting for a 16-2 run to take a 20-12 lead.  KU and WCU then traded points to the 30-21 game-three final. Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) had 13 kills, becoming the first Golden Bear with 500 kills in a season.  She now has 508.  Shelby Bunting (jr. Green Lane/Pennridge) had nine kills in 19 attempts, with no errors.  Shannon Sullivan (sr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) had six kills and 13 digs, while Dani Witherite (jr. PA Furnace/State College) added seven kills and 11 digs.  Krystalee George (jr. Alburtis/Emmaus) had seven kills and three blocks.  Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) passed out 37 assists and chipped in eight digs.
