Athlete of the Week 

Austin Kinney - Volleyball
(fr. Landisville/Hempfield) 

         Austin Kinney, of the volleyball team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Kinney, a setter, led the Golden Bears to a perfect 3-0 record at the Kutztown Classic over the weekend. She averaged 12.4 assists per game, and had 10 service aces and 38 digs in the three matches.  She was named the most valuable player of the Classic.

       FRI 9/2 - at Lehigh Valley Championships (at Lehigh)

       Men: 3rd/6 - Dan Wilde (jr. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) was the top finisher (12th) for Kutztown on the 8k course with a time of 27:04.2 as the Golden Bears' opened up the season at the Lehigh Valley Championships.  KU finished third, behind Lehigh, which had 17 points, and Lafayette with 64.  KU scored 85 points. Following Wilde was Patrick Bone (so. Pipersville/Central Bucks West), 27:22.0 who finished 16th. Dave Tidey (sr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater/Raritan) was close behind at 37:36.8, good for 23rd. Pat McKeever (so. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park), 27:58.1, followed Tidey for 28th place. John Pyne (fr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) (28:03.5), Kyle Keehn (fr. Secane/Ridley) (28:38.8) and Drew Ketterer (fr. Bernville/Tulpehocken) (28:56.9) rounded out KU's top seven performers.

Women: 2nd/5  - Joanna Horstmann (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) led the KU on the 6k course at the Lehigh Valley Championships with time of 23:55, good for 7th overall.  KU's women were second in the team standings with 60 points.  Lehigh scored 19 to win the team title.  Lafayette was third with 70.  Not far behind Horstmann was Julie Karaszkiewicz (fr. Boothwyn/Garnet Valley) in 11th with a time of 24:19. Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken) (24:34) and Molly Lare (Bethlehem/Liberty) (24:37) were right behind each other, good for 13th and 14th, respectively. Cheryl Dingman (fr. Lansdale/North Penn),(24:48), Stephanie Williams (so. Harrisburg/Riverside) (25:30) and Hailey Dell (fr. Saranac Lake, NY/Saranac Lake) (25:36) rounded out the top seven performers for the Golden Bears.

SAT 9/3 - Bloomsburg 1, Kutztown 0, (OT) - The Kutztown Field Hockey team dropped a heartbreaker of a game to the Bloomsburg Huskies in overtime Saturday afternoon at University Field. Bloomsburg scored the game winner amongst a fury of action in front of the Kutztown goal with 12:51 left in overtime. Junior Laura Belfatti (Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) had two defensive saves, and senior Amanda Benney (Lyons/Kutztown) had one defensive save to help out goalie Trista Hershey (sr. Fredericksburg/Tulpehocken). Hershey faced seven shots from Bloomsburg, but was caught outside of the net when Bloomsburg scored the game-ending goal.

WED 8/31 - East Stroudsburg 4, Kutztown 1 -  The East Stroudsburg Warriors scored three second-half goals, including two penalty kicks within a minute of each other, to defeat Kutztown, 4-1, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Kutztown's Greg Sassaman (r-fr. Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) got the Golden bears on the board 5:34 into the first half, with a header off a long pass from Steve Gorski (jr. Easton/Easton).  The Warriors tied the score in the 21st minute. In the second half, the teams battled through nearly 20 scoreless minutes, before KU committed a costly foul in the goalie box.  East Stroudsburg netted the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute.  Less than a minute later, another KU foul in the goalie box led to a penalty kick goal. ESU capped the scoring in the 81st minute. Goalkeeper Jason Sherman (sr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) had 10 saves in goal for the Golden Bears. 

SAT 9/3 - Kutztown 3, West Chester 0 - Kutztown shutout the West Chester Golden Rams, 3-0, for the Golden Bears' first win of the season. Sherman played all 90 minutes in net and had four saves. The first half went by scoreless.  Collin Dalton (so. Carlisle/Big Spring) scored the first goal for Kutztown and was assisted by Jacob Ottinger (fr. Schnecksville/Parkland) at the 71:00 minute mark. Ten minutes later, Sassaman added the second goal for Kutztown off of an assist from Bill Frosoni (fr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield). Bryce Slattery (fr. Williamsport/Williamsport) put the game away at the 87:00 minute mark off of an assist from Sassaman.

Last Week's Action

WED 8/31 - East Stroudsburg 3, Kutztown 2 (2OT) - The Kutztown University Women's Soccer lost a hard-fought game against East Stroudsburg, 3-2, in double overtime. The second overtime was winding down when ESU scored off a corner kick with just 20 seconds left.  ESU opened the scoring just before half time and kept the lead until Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson) tied the game off a penalty shot half way through the second half. It stayed tied until seven minutes left, when Erin Gallagher (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) scored unassisted to give Kutztown the lead. ESU came back with just two and a half minutes left in the game to tie at 2-2.   

SAT 9/3 - West Chester 1, Kutztown 0 - The Golden Bears' were defeated by the Golden Rams Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams lone goal was scored in the 78th minute. Goaltender Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) faced 13 shots on the day. Kutztown managed eight shots on the afternoon.

FRI 9/2-SAT 9/3 - KUTZTOWN CLASSIC

FRI 9/2 - Kutztown 3, Assumption 0 - KU cruised through their first match of the Kutztown Classic Tournament defeating Assumption College 30-26, 30-10, and 30-18. The Golden Bears were led by Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) with 14 kills. She registered 6 digs and assisted in 4 blocks.  Erin Waters (so. Waymart/Western Wayne) partnered with Brandon for three block assists. Dani Witherite (jr. PA Furnace/State College) added 11 kills and contributed 11 digs. Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) was impressive in her debut for the Golden Bears. She had six service aces and led the team with 35 assists and 16 digs. Nicole Biuso (so. S. Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) assisted Kinney in the Golden Bears' defensive effort with 14 digs. Shelby Bunting (jr. Green Lane/Pennridge) had nine kills, three digs and one block assist. 

SAT 9/3 - Kutztown 3, Adelphi 1- After a tough loss (29-31) in the first game of the match, Kutztown was victorious in three straight games to defeat Adelphi, 30-22, 30-13 and 30-27. Brandon tallied a school record 28 kills, eclipsing her own record set last season.  She added nine digs and three block assists. Kinney continued to be impressive turning in a 51 assist performance. Shannon Sullivan (sr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) led the team with 26 digs, while contributing 11 kills. Waters helped the cause by assisting on four blocks, while striking 11 kills. Bunting also had three block assists.  

SAT 9/3 - Kutztown 3, Mercy 0 - KU was victorious in their final match of the Kutztown Classic, defeating the Flyers of Mercy College 30-28, 30-24, and 30-23.  Once again, Brandon proved to be the team's offensive leader, tallying 20 kills in the game. She also contributed on the defensive side of the ball, tying for second on the team with two assisted blocks. Waters led the Golden Bears with three assisted blocks. Sullivan proved to be a formidable opponent on the defensive side of the ball, leading the team with 24 digs and assisting on two blocks. Sullivan also had ten kills in the game. Bunting posted the same number of blocks (2) and kills (10) as Sullivan. Kinney put up 38 assists against the Flyers and dazzled the crowd with myriad awkward position shots and diving stops. For the tournament, Kinney assisted on a total of 124 kills, giving her an average of 12 kills per game. 

KU's Bunting and Brandon were named to the All-Tournament team, while Kinney was named the Most Valuable Player.
