Marc Benson - M. Soccer
(sr. Boyertown/Boyertown)
Marc Benson, of the men's soccer team, is this week's KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Benson scored three goals in Kutztown's 1-0-1 week. He had the game-winning goal late in KU's 2-1 win at Bloomsburg. In a 3-3 tie vs. Slippery Rock, Benson scored two goals, including the tying and go-ahead goal in the second half, before SRU came back to tie the score.

TUE 9/13 - Kutztown 1, Indiana (PA) 0 - Kelley Healey (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) netted the game's only goal five minutes into overtime to give KU a 1-0 win over Indiana (PA) in PSAC action. Healey, who scored her seventh goal in the last five games, took the pass from Laura Kline (sr. Reading/Reading) and found the back of the cage at the 75:19 mark to give the Golden Bears the win. Kutztown was out shot 23-8 in the contest, but goalkeeper Trista Hershey (sr. Fredricksburg/ Tulpehocken) turned away 11 shots for the shutout victory.
SAT 9/17 - Shippensburg 1, Kutztown 0 - Kutztown held strong throughout most of the game but gave up the game-winning goal to Shippensburg with seven minutes left to lose 1-0. Amanda Behney (sr. Lyon/Kutztown) came up big with three defensive saves. She made a clutch goal line save in the second period. Hershey was strong in goal for the Golden Bears, making 14 saves in the game, but was not able to come up with the save on a blistering shot by Shippensburg.

SAT 9/18 -SUN 9/19 - 4th/9-KU opened the season at the Mercyhurst Invitational in a two-day tournament. Kutztown was in third after the first day with a score of 338. Kutztown performed well the second day ending up with a score of 340 for a total of 678, good for fourth overall. Findlay won with a score of 656, Western Ontario was second with 658. Ashland was third with 669 and California (PA) was behind KU with 686. Angela Petak (so. Brockway/Brockway) led KU golfers with a score of 83-82-165, tied for seventh. Lauren Foulke (fr. Kempton/Kutztown) tied for 14th with 83-87-170. Holly Shubilla (jr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) was just behind Foulke with 88-83-171, tied for 16th. Bethany Adams (fr. Allentown/Parkland) rounded out the top four with 87-88-175 for 22nd.

TUE 9/13 - Kutztown 2, Bloomsburg 1 - Marc Benson (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) scored off a free kick from Brian Walter (sr. Feasterville/Neshaminy) with four minutes left in the second half to give Kutztown a 2-1 PSAC victory at Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg took the lead in the 50th minute, but Greg Sassaman (r-fr. Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) scored off a throw in by Rick Zimmerer (jr. Franklin, NJ/Wallkill Valley) a minute later the knot the score at 1-1. Jason Sherman (sr. Chalfont/Central Bucks East) had four saves in goal for KU.
FRI 9/16 - Kutztown 3, Slippery Rock 3 - Slippery Rock came out strong in the first half, putting two goals on the board in the first eight minutes. Bill Frosoni (fr. North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield), off an assist from Jesse Novatski (fr. Clarks Summit/Abington Heights), started the Golden Bears scoring at the 39 minute mark. KU was within one going into half time. KU started the second half strong by tying the game six minutes into the second half. Benson scored off an assist from Sassaman. Three minutes later, Benson scored his second goal of the contest and put the Golden Bears ahead by one off a free kick. KU kept the lead until the 70 minute mark when Slippery Rock scored to tie the game and send it into overtime. A scoreless overtime was played ending the game in a 3-3 tie.

TUE 9/13 - Kutztown 1, Bloomsburg 0 - Xiomera Marin (fr. West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) scored the game's only goal in the first half to lift Kutztown to a PSAC East victory over Bloomsburg. Marin, whose two goals this season have both been game winners, scored at the 27:04 mark of the first half, off a rebound from a long shot by Kim Kelty (so. Levittown/Neshaminy). The Golden Bears were out shot in the game, 12-7, but goalkeeper Nicole Rodweller (jr. Easton/Easton) recorded six saves for her first shutout as a Golden Bear.
SAT 9/17 - Kutztown 2, CW Post 1 (OT) - KU narrowly defeated CW Post, 2-1, in overtime. The Golden Bears tied the game with 4:30 left to go in the second half off a goal from Kristen Kentner (so. Allentown/Parkland), assisted by Alexandra Butler (fr. Montoursvile/Montoursville). Kelly Murdock (jr. West Lawn/Wilson) scored the game winning goal late in overtime to clinch the victory off a pass from Kelty. KU held CW Post to only four shots in the game, while the Golden Bear offense had 15.

SAT 9/17 - Kutztown 8, Indiana (PA) 1 - KU opened the season strong with a convincing win over Indiana (PA) 8-1. Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen, Germany) won at first singles and doubles. She won 6-1, 6-1 in singles. Kloeffer paired up with Magaly Peter (fr. Mundolsheim, France) to defeat IUP 8-2 in doubles. Peter played second singles and also won 6-1, 6-1. KU teams of Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA) won at second doubles while Lauren Losoncy (sr. Shillington/Govenor Mifflen) and Kristen Bodalski (sr. Media/Cardinal O'Hara) took third doubles. Pachkawde, Losoncy, and Nansi won at third-through-fifth singles, respectively.

TUE 9/13 - Kutztown 3, Cheyney 0 - KU cruised to a 3-0 win over Cheyney in the Pennsylvania PSAC East opener, 30-10, 30-5 and 30-11. Brittany Hoke (fr. Chadds Ford/Unionville) had 10 kills to lead the offensive attack. Krystalee George (jr. Alburtis/Emmaus) added seven kills, while Kimberly Cifuni (so. Springfield/Springfield) notched five kills, 11 aces and seven digs. Ashlie Molloy (fr. Allentown/Parkland) had 17 assists and eight aces. Amanda Schoemaker (fr. Macungie/Emmaus) had eight assists and nine aces.
WED 9/14 - Kutztown 3, Wilmington, DE 0 - KU defeated the Wildcats in three games, 30-19, 31-29, 30-21. Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) led the team with 16 kills. She also had 10 digs and four blocks. Shannon Sullivan (sr. Pine Grove/Pine Grove) let her presence be known with 11 kills. Shelby Bunting (jr. Green Lane/Pennridge) contributed with nine kills and Erin Waters (so. Waymart/Western Wayne) chipped in with eight. Bunting and Waters also had three blocks each. Austin Kinney (fr. Landisville/Hempfield) continued to dominate in assists with 42.
SAT 9/17 - Shippensburg 3, Kutztown 2 - Shippensburg came on strong in the end to defeat the Golden Bears 3-2. Game scores were 30-21, 27-30, 30-28, 28-30, 4-15. Dani Witherite (jr. PA Furnace/State College) led the team in digs with 24. Witherite also contributed 4 blocks and 14 kills. Waters notched six blocks. Kinney helped out at the net with 44 assists. Kinney also had 15 digs. Brandon led the offensive attack with 24 kills. With these 24 kills, Brandon reached 1,000 kills in her career at Kutztown. She is the fourth player to reach this mark and the first to do so as a junior. She passed Sarah Knaub (1995-98) who had 1,006 and Angie Rideout (1996-99) who had 1,016. She now has1,018, putting her in second.
