Athlete of the Week

Staci McGinty, women's swimming
(sr. Jamison/Central Bucks East)

 

        Staci McGinty, of the women's swimming team, is this week's KU
Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. McGinty placed first in two
individual events, the 100- and 200-yard freestyle, in a win over Ramapo
College. She also took first in the 200 medley relay at 1:56.94. McGinty
finished the 200 freestyle in 2:03.84 and the 100 in 57.74 seconds.

FALL SPORTS

Cross Country

Last Week's Action

      SAT 10/27 - Women 5th/14 PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS  - The KU women's team
finished fifth with 122 points at the PSAC Championship Saturday at Kutztown
University. Bloomsburg posts 65 points to win the team title. Indiana (Pa.)
finished second with 99 points, just ahead of Edinboro (102) in the 6K race.
Edinboro streak of titles ended at nine with Saturday's third-place finish.
Slippery Rock was fourth, followed by KU, and Shippensburg (112),
Millersville (159), Clarion (168), East Stroudsburg (210) and Lock Haven
(213) round out the top 10. West Chester, Mansfield, California (Pa.) and
Cheyney followed. Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) and Joanna
Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) earned All-PSAC honors, with
Williams finishing 10th in a time of 24:29 and Horstmann 14th at 24:33.
Hailey Dell (jr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) finished 28th at 25:28.
Maureen Watson (so. Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic) was 33rd with a
time of 25:39 and Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan
Reg.) was 10 seconds behind Watson in 37th place. Jolene Collins (so.
Annville/Palmyra) and Kristin Green (jr. Camp Hill/Camp Hill) rounded out
the Golden Bears' top seven.

      SAT 10/27 - Men 9th/13 PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS     - The KU men's team
finished ninth at the PSAC Championship with 220 points. Edinboro (33) edged
out Slippery Rock (41) for the team title. Lock Haven, the conference's
defending champion, finished third with 103, while Shippensburg (132) and
Bloomsburg (181) rounded out the top five. East Stroudsburg (191) was sixth,
ahead of Mansfield (195) and California (Pa.), which scored a 217.
Millersville, West Chester and Indiana (Pa.) all finished behind KU. Patrick
Bone (sr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West) led the Golden Bears with his
22nd-place finish at 27:28, ahead of teammate Tom Mooney (fr.
Churchville/Council Rock South), who was 27th at 27:46. Matt Cocciardi (fr.
York/York Suburban) took 43rd at 28:22, while Kevin Rodgers (fr. Clifton
Heights/Upper Darby) was 63rd with a time of 28:55. Three second behind him
was Tim Ballingall (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown East) in 65th. Ben Loht (so.
Lewistown/Indian Valley) and John Pyne (jr. Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt)
finished three seconds apart as well, with Loht taking 70th at 29:08. Pyne
was 71st.

Field Hockey (17-4, 11-3 PSAC)

Last Week's Action

      FRI 10/26 - Bloomsburg 2, KU 1 (PSAC semifinals, at Indiana, Pa.) -
Bloomsburg University used two first-half goals to defeat Kutztown 2-1 in
the PSAC Semifinals Friday afternoon. The Huskies opened the scoring at the
11:27 mark with an unassisted goal. Anne Waapu (r-fr. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND)
evened the score less than three minutes later when she scored on a penalty
corner pass from Alyssa Maltese (so. Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown).
Bloomsburg netted the game-winner at the 23:22 mark of the first half. Waapu
narrowly missed a potential tying goal with 11 minutes left in the game when
her penalty corner shot hit the post. Sam Flowers (sr.
Harleysville/Souderton) recorded five saves in the cage for KU.

Men's Soccer (1-18-1, 0-16-0 PSAC)

Last Week's Action

      WED 10/24 - NEW YORK TECH 4, KU 1 - The KU men's soccer team fell 4-1
to New York Tech in a non-conference game at Keystone Field. Jason Lear (so.
Montoursville/Montoursville) scored the only goal for the Golden Bears
(1-17-1) as New York Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Lear
scored, off an assist from Greg Sassaman (jr. Blairstown, N.J./North Warren
Reg.), in the 52nd minute to cut it to 2-1.

      SAT 10/27 - California (Pa.) 4, KU 3  - The KU men's soccer team fell
4-3 at California (Pa.) in the Golden Bears' final game of the 2007 season.
Sassaman scored two goals and had an assist. Rusty Chapel (so.
Topton/Brandywine) scored another for the Golden Bears, and  Mike Choiniere
(so. Boyertown/Boyertown) also had an assist. Chapel scored the first goal
at the 4:36 mark on a header, assisted by Sassaman and Choiniere. Sassaman
made it 2-0 with a breakaway goal, unassisted, at the 11:04 mark. The
Vulcans scored three straight goals for a 3-2 lead at halftime. Sassaman
knotted the score with another unassisted goal at the 49:55 mark. The score
remained tied for nearly 30 minutes, before Cal netted the game-winner with
a little more than 10 minutes to play. Ryan Kratz (sr.
Perkiomenville/Boyertown) had six saves for Kutztown.

 

Women's Soccer (10-6-3, 5-5-3 PSAC East)

Last Week's Action

      SAT 10/27 - KU 1, Mansfield 0 - Kim Kelty (sr. Levittown/Neshaminy)
scored the only goal in KU's 1-0 shutout win at Mansfield Saturday in a PSAC
East game. Kelty's goal was her sixth of the 2007 season. She concludes her
career at KU with 20 goals and 28 assists for 68 points, third all-time at
KU. Her 28 assists are second in KU history and her 20 goals place her in
fourth. Michele Kalb (so. Allentown/Parkland) assisted Kelty on the goal,
which was scored at the 22:28 mark. Mansfield managed eight shots and
Stefanie Bonsky (fr. Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) made five saves to
record her fourth shutout of the season. KU finished the 2007 campaign with
six shutouts. With the win, the Golden Bears have recorded 10-plus-win
seasons in six consecutive years.

 

Women's Volleyball (26-7, 7-1 PSAC East)

Last Week's Action

      TUE 10/23 - KU 3, Millersville 0 - KU defeated Millersville 3-0 in a
PSAC East match. Austin Kinney (jr. Landisville/Hempfield) hit a career
milestone with her 14 digs, giving her more than 1,000 for her career. With
1,013, she is just the fifth KU player to surpass the 1,000-dig mark. Kinney
also had 48 assists, helping the Golden Bears down Millersville in three
games, 32-30, 32-30 and 30-20. Nicole Biuso (sr. Centereach, N.Y./Ward
Melville) had 27 digs. Kelsey Nester (fr. Catasauqua/ Catasauqua) had a
team-high 14 kills and Lindsay Confer (fr. Wingate/Bald Eagle Area) had 12.
Kaitlyn Cunliffe (fr. Levittown/Pennsbury) and Katie Miller (so.
Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) each had nine kills, and Cunliffe had 16 digs.
Erin Waters (sr. Waymart/Western Wayne) finished with eight kills and three
blocks.

      SAT 10/27 - KU 3, NEW YORK TECH 0 - KU shut out New York Tech 3-0 at
Keystone Hall in a non-conference match, setting a single-season record for
wins. KU won with game scores of 30-23, 30-19 and 30-24. KU's 26 wins
eclipses the previous single-season record for wins, set in 1983 and equaled
in 1984. Confer led the Golden Bears with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Kinney
had 41 assists, six kills and nine digs. Waters had 10 kills and two blocks,
and Biuso had 20 digs. Jamie Celia (fr. Douglassville/Daniel Boone) recorded
12 digs and two service aces, and Nester had eight kills and two blocks.
