Athlete of the Week

Katie Miller, Volleyball
(so. Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) 

        Katie Miller, of the women's volleyball team, is this week's KU
Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week. Miller notched 55 kills last week as
KU went 5-0 with four wins at the East Stroudsburg Tournament and a 3-1 win
over PSAC foe Millersville. Against Millersville, Miller had 17 kills,
helping the Golden Bears overcome a game two loss. Miller also had 16 kills
against Bryant and another 10 against Bridgeport.

Cross Country

Last Week's Action

      SAT 9/22 - Women 7th/20 at Iona Meet of Champions - Stephanie Williams
(sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) led the KU placing 15th overall in the 6K race
with a time of 22:42, as the women edged out Division I teams like Dartmouth
and Army. The Golden Bears' 210 points were 15 shy of Division I Harvard's
195. Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) finished 29th for
KU with a time of 23:25, while Kristen Cupido (fr. Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.), Maureen Watson (so. Walnutport/Allentown
Central Catholic) and Hailey Dell (jr. Saranac Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake)
rounded out the Golden Bears top five. Cupido (24:08) finished 49th, Watson
(24:16) 52nd and Dell (24:38) 65th. Jolene Collins (so. Annville/Palmyra)
finished 68th with a time of 24:40 and Keri Brown (fr. Southampton,
N.J./Seneca) was 92nd at 25:52.

      SAT 9/22 - Men 13th/20 at Iona Meet of Champions - Tom Mooney (fr.
Churchville/Council Rock South) led the men with a 66th-place finish in the
8K race at 27:36. Pat Bone (sr. Doylestown/Central Bucks East) finished in
73rd at 27:46 and Ben Loht (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley) was three seconds
behind him in 76th. Kevin Rodgers (fr. Clifton Heights/Upper Darby) finished
91st with a time of 28:27 and in 93rd place, five seconds behind Rodgers,
was Pat McKeever (sr. Midland Park/Midland Park). Tim Ballingall (fr.
Downingtown/Downingtown East) and Matt Cocciardi (fr. York/York Suburban)
rounded out the KU's top seven with times of 28:43 and 29:53, respectively.
Ballingall finished 98th and Cocciardi 110th. The men's 13th-place finish
was better than West Virginia-Wesleyan, which is ranked No. 9 in the East
Region, one behind KU.

Field Hockey (10-0, 5-0 PSAC)

Last Week's Action

      WED 9/19 - KU 2, East Stroudsburg 0 - No. 2-ranked KU got two
unassisted goals in the first half from Carrie Healey (jr. Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North) and Kelley Healey (sr. Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) in the PSAC contest against East Stroudsburg. Sam Flowers (sr.
Harleysville/Souderton) made eight saves while collecting her second
consecutive shutout for the Golden Bears. Carrie Healey opened the scoring
with a goal at the 11:55 mark and Kelley Healey scored her 10th goal of the
season at the 28:26 mark.

      SAT 9/22 - KU 4, MANSFIELD 2 - Heather Hoxter (sr. Glenmore/Octorara)
and Kelley Healey each scored a goal in the second half as KU pulled away in
a hard-fought PSAC contest. KU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but No. 8
Mansfield applied the pressure in the second half, cutting it to 2-1 at the
44:21 mark. Hoxter, however, deposited a pass from Lyndsay Butler (jr.
Annandale, N.J./Summit) into the back of the cage for a 3-1 lead with 14:34
left. Mansfield countered two minutes later, but KU was on the spot again
when Kelley Healey scored an unassisted tally, her team-high 11th goal of
the season, to make it 4-2. Healey assisted her sister, Carrie Healey, 11:45
in to make it 2-0 after Anne Waapu (r-fr. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) blasted a
shot past the Mansfield keeper at the 9:04 mark. Flowers made six saves in
the game.

Women's Golf

Last Week's Action

     SAT 9/22 - SUN 9/23 - 3rd/10 at Mercyhurst Invitational - Angela Petak
(sr. Brockway/Brockway) led KU with school-record-tying 77 Sunday in the
final round of the Mercyhurst Invitational at Lake View Country Club. The
Golden Bears, shooting a two-day total of 676, finished third behind Ashland
University and the University of Findlay. Petak's round of 77 helped her
finish in seventh overall with a two-day total of 164, 20-over par. She tied
KU's record for 18 holes on a par 72 course (Andrea Ely, 2004). Erica
Dechowitz (fr. Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) shot an 84 Sunday to finish with
a 170 and in 12th, and Lauren Foulke (jr. Kempton/Kempton) and Krista
Tressler (fr. Fayetteville/Heritage Academy) each had an 85 in the final
round and tied for 15th with identical scores of 173. Samantha Rumbley (fr.
Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) chipped in with an 89, and Kelli Pry (fr.
Coatesville/Coatesville), who led the Golden Bears in the first round with
an 84, shot a 92 Sunday.

Men's Soccer (1-9-0, 0-8-0 PSAC)

Last Week's Action

      TUE 9/18 - BLOOMSBURG 3, KU 0 - Goalkeeper Matthew Fredericks (so.
Montdale/Lakeland) made 14 saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick,
but Bloomsburg's three tallies in the final 30 minutes handed KU the loss at
Keystone Field. KU held Bloomsburg scoreless in the first half, but the
Golden Bears couldn't break the shutout with their 11 shots.

      SAT 9/22 - CALIFORNIA (Pa.) 5, KU 2 - Greg Sassaman (jr. Blairstown,
N.J./North Warren Reg.) and Joe Carmina (so. Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive)
each a had goal for KU, but California used crisp passing to put the Golden
Bears in a hole early. Carmina cut it to 3-1 after halftime off a pass from
Jake Young (so. Blandon/Fleetwood), but California scored two more goals in
a span of eight minutes to make it 5-1.

Women's Soccer (6-3-2, 3-3-1 PSAC East)

Last Week's Action

      MON 9/17 - KU 3, BLOOMSBURG 0 - KU scored three second-half goals to
defeat Bloomsburg, as Kim Kelty (sr. Levittown/Neshaminy) had a goal and an
assist, while Angela Corrado (so. Kutztown/Kutztown) and Julie Folsom (sr.
Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland) also scored. Knotted at zero at halftime, Corrado
scored in the 61st minute, redirecting a corner kick from Diana Hopper (so.
New York, N.Y./Ramapo {N.J.}) with her head. Kelty scored on a breakaway in
the 77th minute, then assisted Folsom in the 85th minute to cap the scoring.
Stefanie Bonsky (fr. Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Reg.) recorded 11 saves for
her second shutout of the season. 

      THU 9/20 - KU 0, Clarion 0 (2OT) -  KU and Clarion battled to a
scoreless tie in a PSAC crossover. KU's Brittany Melnyk (fr. Sinking
Spring/Wilson) notched six saves.

      SAT 9/22 - KU 3, CALIFORNIA (Pa.) 0 - Jen Pyne (fr. Wall, N.J./Wall)
had a goal and an assist leading KU past California (Pa.) at Keystone Field.
KU goalkeeper Melnyk made three saves to collect the shutout. At the 36:27
mark, Pyne headed a cross from Kelty into the net for the 1-0 lead. KU made
it 2-0 quickly after halftime when Carolynne Kahl (fr. Bethel/Tulpehocken)
redirected another perfectly placed pass from Kelty 40 seconds in. Folsom
scored her team-high seventh goal of the season at the 70:09 mark, taking a
pass from Pyne, dribbling past defenders and firing it by the keeper.

Last Week's Action

      SAT 9/22-SUN 9/23 - at ITA Regionals (at Bloomsburg) -  Rohini Das
(so. Kolkata, INDIA) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals at
Bloomsburg Sunday, but fell to Anne Chipchase, of California (Pa.), 4-6,
6-4, 0-1 (5-10). Das defeated Holy Family's Quena Borres 6-1, 6-1 in the
third round earlier in the day to advance to the quarterfinals. KU's doubles
team of Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY) and Das fell in their
third-round match early Sunday, dropping an 8-1 decision to Concordia's
Somadi Drucker and Celise Sesanker. Kaely McCabe (fr. Schwenksville/Spring
Ford), competing in the B-Singles bracket, fell in the third round to Holy
Family's Melanie Pulsinelli, 4-6, 3-6. Sabrina Arnaud (so. Pintendre,
CANADA) and Joerns each won consolation matches Sunday, while Tessa Wright
(fr. Lewisburg/Lewistburg) fell in straight sets to Concordia's Tita Kiss,
1-6, 0-6. Arnaud defeated Bloomsburg's Alison Carney, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, while
Joerns won 6-4, 7-5 over Bentley's Kelly Fleszar.

Women's Volleyball (15-2, 3-0 PSAC East)

Last Week's Action

      TUE 9/18 - KU 3, MILLERSVILLE 1 -  Katie Miller (so.
Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) had 17 kills and Jamie Celia (fr.
Douglassville/Daniel Boone) had 35 assists and 10 digs as KU defeated
Millersville at Keystone Arena. Nicole Biuso (sr. Centereach, N.Y./Ward
Melville) had 27 digs in the PSAC East contest. KU games scores were 30-19,
28-30, 30-14 and 30-27. Kaitlyn Cunliffe (fr. Levittown/Pennsbury) had 20
digs and Catie Leahy (fr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) added 18. Kelsey
Nester (fr. Catasauqua/Catasauqua) had 15 digs and five blocks. Erin Waters
(sr. Waymart/Western Wayne) had 10 kills.

      FRI 9/21-SAT 9/22 - At the East Stroudsburg Tournament

      FRI 9/21 -  KU 3, Bridgeport 0 - KU opened play at the East
Stroudsburg Tournament, defeating Bridgeport in three games, 30-28, 30-15
and 30-25. Lindsay Confer (fr. Wingate/Bald Eagle) had 11 kills and two
blocks. Miller and Danielle Ozment (fr. Reading/Holy Name) had 10 and eight
kills, respectively. Celia recorded 20 assists and two aces, while Biuso
notched 15 digs and three aces.

      FRI 9/21 -  KU 3, Tiffin 1 -  KU came from behind to defeat Tiffin
3-1. After losing 30-24 in game one, KU rattled off three straight wins,
30-27, 30-27 and 30-25. Waters had 12 kills and 10 blocks. Ozment chipped in
nine kills, nine digs and two aces. Celia and Alex Thomas (fr.
Quakertown/Quakertown) had 18 and 17 assists, respectively. Biuso rounded
out KU's leaders with 16 digs.

      SAT 9/22 - KU 3 Bryant 1 -  Bryant put KU in a 1-0 hole, winning game
one 30-20, but the Golden Bears played strong and held on for three straight
wins, 31-29, 31-29 and 30-27. Miller had 16 kills and five blocks, while
Confer had 11 kills and 15 digs. Celia finished with 35 assists, and Biuso
had 31 digs.

      SAT 9/22 - KU 3, Caldwell 0 - KU swept Caldwell with scores of 30-20,
30-6 and 30-13. Ozment had nine kills and 12 digs, and Miller had another
six kills. Biuso had 25 digs, and Celia had 18 assists.
