BALDWIN SELECTED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM
KUTZTOWN, PA - Kutztown University safety Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/ Dobbins Tech) has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Baldwin was named to the College Division Second-Team Defense. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must play have reached sophomore status, be a starter or key reserve and maintain a 3.20 grade point average on a 4.00 scale. The College Division includes all non-Division I institutions.
Baldwin started all 10 games for KU in 2005, and finished fourth on the team with 61 tackles. He blocked five kicks, including two punts, two field goals, and an extra point. He had two interceptions, nine pass breakups, forced a pair of fumbles and recovered two others. He returned one fumble for a school-record 98 yard TD against Clarion.
The honor is the latest in a string of post-season awards for Baldwin. He has previously been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Defensive Player of the year, first-team All-PSAC East, first-team Daktronics All-Northeast Region and first-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II.
In his career, Baldwin appeared in 38 games. He had 203 career tackles, 24 pass breakups and three interceptions.
Baldwin is the second KU football player to receive Academic All-America honors. Alex Daecher also received second-team status following the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
The Golden Bears, under eighth year head coach Dave Keeny, finished the 2005 season with a 2-8 overall record and posted a 2-4 mark in PSAC East action.
