THREE GOLDEN BEARS NAMED TO ESPN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS
KUTZTOWN, PA - Three Kutztown University student-athletes, two from the football team and one from volleyball, have been named to the 2005 ESPN the magazine Academic Academic All-District II team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech), and Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II College Division Football Team. Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) was named to the All-District II College Division Volleyball team.
Baldwin and Brandon were selected to their respective first teams, while Mitchell was recognized on the second team. With their inclusion on the first team, Baldwin and Brandon are now eligible for the Academic All-America ballot, the results of which will be announced on November 30 (volleyball) and December 1 (football).
Baldwin, a safety and two-year team captain, is a criminal justice major with a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.79. He started all 10 games in 2005, and finished fourth on the team with 61 tackles. He had five blocks, including two punts, two field goals, and an extra point. He had nine pass breakups, two interceptions, forced a pair of fumbles, and recovered two, returning one a school record 98 yards for a TD against Clarion. He was named to the 2004 Academic All-America District II first team and the 2003 Academic All-District II second team. In his career, Baldwin appeared in 38 games. He had 203 career tackles, 24 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, eight blocked kicks and three interceptions.
Mitchell is a secondary education-mathematics major with a 3.69 GPA. A linebacker, he played all 10 games and finished second on the team with 83 tackles, including five for loss, four breakups and an interception. He also had two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was named to the 2004 Academic All-America District II second team. In his career at Kutztown, Mitchell had 292 tackles with 22 for loess and 3.5 sacks. He had 14 pass breakups, six forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries in 42 games.
The Golden Bear football team finished the 2005 season with a 2-8 overall record and posted a 2-4 mark in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division action.
Brandon is a psychology/criminal justice major with a GPA of 3.68. She leads this team in kills (541, 5.10/gm) and blocks (106). She has 10 service aces and 158 digs in 2005. She was the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Player of the Year, AVCA All-Atlantic Region first team and All-PSAC East first team. In her three years at Kutztown, she holds the record for most kills in a season (541) and in a career (1,372). She also holds the most kills in a match (30).
Kutztown volleyball has a current record of 21-11, 7-3, PSAC East and will host the PSAC Championships this weekend, Nov. 11-12.
