FIVE GOLDEN BEARS NAMED TO ALL-PSAC EAST FOOTBALL SQUAD
BALDWIN NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

KUTZTOWN, PA - Five members of the Kutztown University football team were selected to the 2005 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division teams, in voting conducted by the league's coaches.

             Safety Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/ Dobbins Tech) was named the PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-PSAC East first team. He is joined on the first team by linebacker Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) and defensive end Mike Grosso (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John).  Linebacker Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) and place kicker Matt Scartozzi (sr. Malvern/Bishop Shanahan) earned selections on the second team.  

Baldwin was named to the first team for the second-straight season.  He started all 10 games in 2005, and finished fourth on the team with 61 tackles.  He blocked five kicks, including two punts, two field goals, and an extra point. He had nine pass breakups, forced a pair of fumbles and recovered two others. He returned one fumble for a school-record 98 yard TD against Clarion. In his career, Baldwin appeared in 38 games.  He has 203 career tackles, 24 pass breakups and three interceptions.  Baldwin was also named to Academic All-District first-team honors for the second straight year.

Mitchell gained a spot on the first team for the first time in his career. He had been named to the second team the past two seasons.  He played all 10 games and finished second on the team with 83 tackles, including five for loss. He had four pass break ups, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and an interception.  In his career at Kutztown, Mitchell had 292 tackles, with 22 for loss, 3.5 sacks and 14 pass break ups in 42 games.  Mitchell was also named to Academic All-District second-team honors for the second consecutive year.

Grosso was a first-time All-PSAC East selection. He played in all ten games this season and had 56 tackles with a team high 14 for loss and six sacks. In his three years at Kutztown he has 109 tackles, including 18 for loss and 8 sacks.

            Hicks was named to the second team All-PSAC East defense.  He led the team with 84 tackles, including 12 for loss. He also had four pass breakups, four forced fumbles and a sack. He returned a fumble 89 yards for a TD against Millersville. In his career, he had 223 tackles, with 27 for loss. He had 10 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, two interceptions and three sacks.

            Scartozzi was named to the All-PSAC second team for the second time in his career, after earning the same honor in 2003.  He connected on 7-of-9 field goals with a long of 42 yards and hit 19-of-22 PAT kicks. In his career, he set KU's records for field goals made (24) and field goal percentage (24-38, 63.2%).

            The Golden Bears, under eighth year head coach Dave Keeny, finished the 2005 season with a 2-8 overall record and posted a 2-4 mark in PSAC East action.
