KUTZTOWN, PA – Brent Steinmetz rushed for 142 yards and three
touchdowns, while Brandon Simmons accounted for 275 all purpose yards
to lead West Chester to a 48-21 win over Kutztown in Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action at University
Field.
Steinmetz rushed 26 times and scored touchdowns in the
first, second and fourth quarters. Simmons caught four passes for 121
yards and a touchdown, returned seven punts for 141 yards and a
kickoff for 13. WCU quarterback Matt Burdalski completed 9-of-22
passes for 199 yards and two scores.
For Kutztown, James Brooks caught five passes for 99 yards
and two TDs, while QB Kyle Spotts completed 18-of-36 for 218 yards,
three touchdowns and an interception. Maurice Adams rushed for 64
yards on 13 carries.
KU opened the scoring on a 56 yard hookup from Spotts to
Brooks with 6:29 left in the first. The lead, however, was short-
lived, as West Chester rattled off 24 straight points, including a
Steinmetz four yard run to start the rally and a 23 yarder to cap it
with 7:05 left in the second. Burdalski connected with Mike
Washington for a 22 yarder late in the first, and Alex Walsh hit a 24
yard field goal midway through the second.
KU cut into the lead just before half, taking over at the
25 yardline after Leroy Azubuike blocked a punt. Spotts hit Larry
Baumgardner from 12 yards out to make it 24-14 at halftime.
West Chester scored less than a minute into the second
half when Burdalski hit Simmons for a 50-yard touchdown.
Kutztown answered back on its next drive, with Spotts
hitting Brooks for a 16 yard TD.
The Rams put the game away with 17 points in the fourth
quarter. Walsh connected on a 22 yard field goal, Steinmetz ran in
from one yard out and Dean Millard capped the scoring with a seven
yard run with 45 seconds left.
Scott Smith led Kutztown with 12 tackles. Greg Mitchell
had 11 stop, while Azubuike had 10 hits and the blocked punt. Michael
Baldwin had six tackles and two breakups.
Randy Reinert let WCU with 13 tackles, three tackles for
loss, a forced fumble and two sacks.
West Chester improves to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the PSAC
East. Kutztown falls to 1-4 overall, 1-1 in the division.
