Kutztown picks up first win of the season

Kutztown 45, Mansfield 18

MANSFIELD, PA - Larry Baumgardner tied a school record with four touchdown catches as Kutztown University picked up its first win of the season, defeating Mansfield, 45-18, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at Van Norman Field Saturday afternoon.

            Baumgardner caught nine passes for 93 yards and all four of QB Kyle Spotts' touchdowns.  Baumgardner ties the school record held by Tony Santella (1986) and current KU receivers coach Mark Steinmeyer (1991).  

            Spotts was 24-of-31 for 221 yards, while running backs Maurice Adams and Tony Bria both went over 100 yards.  Adams rushed for 143 yards on 14 carries, including 65 yard TD run in the fourth quarter.  He also caught four passes for 30 yards.  Bria gained 102 yards on 19 rushes, including a one-yard scoring run in the second.

            The Golden Bear offense clicked on all cylinders on Saturday, racking up 582 yards, including 361 rushing and 221 passing.  KU, which had 35 first downs in the game, did not attempt a punt, with all of its drives ending with a score or on one of three turnovers.  

            Kutztown never trailed in the game, taking the lead at the 9:22 mark of the first half when Baumgardner capped a nine-play, 85-yard drive with a five yard TD catch.

            MU answered on its next drive, going 69 yards on nine plays as Poohbear McNeal went in from one yard out.  The PAT failed, keeping it 7-6 with 5:20 left in the first.

            Matt Scartozzi set KU's career field goal record on the next drive, connecting on a 30 yard attempt with 53 seconds left in the first.  Scartozzi passed Steve Kratz into sole possession of the record with 20 career field goals.

            Michael Baldwin intercepted John Hengehold's pass at the MU 30 yardline early in the second quarter, setting up Bria's one yard dive eight plays later.  

            The Golden Bears had a chance to put the game away in the first half, but its last two possessions ended on a fumble at the Mansfield seven, and an interception in the final minute at the MU 13.  KU had to settle for a 17-6 lead at halftime.

            Kutztown took the opening kick of the second half and marched 67 yards on nine plays.  Spotts' first pass of the drive was incomplete, but he connected on the next six passes, including a 15 yarder to paydirt for Baumgardner.  

            After an MU punt, the Bears went right down the field again.  Adams gained 39 yards on five carries, setting up Spotts-to-Baumgardner for a seven yard TD with 7:38 left in the third.  KU led 31-6 after ratting off 24 straight points.

            Mansfield used some trickery on its next possession.  McNeal tossed a halfback option pass 29 yards to Ozzie Mathis, but the two-point conversion failed and MU trailed 31-12.  

            Spotts and Baumgardner hooked up for the fourth and final time on a 10 yard TD pass six seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 38-12.

            MU went 83 yards on 10 plays, with Hengehold connecting with Jeff Tanner from 18 yards out to make it 38-18 with 11:10 remaining.  Mansfield recovered the onside kick, but couldn't take advantage, with DE Leroy Azubuike picking up a 10-yard sack on third down to force a punt.

            On the next play, Adams broke through the line and raced 65 yards to cap the scoring with 9:38 left.

            Azubuike had seven tackles to lead KU.  DE Mike Grosso had six stops, including a sack.  DE Kevin Branco had five tackles, including two for loss.   

            James Brooks had five catches for 40 yards, while Jason Henley had three catches for 28 yards.  Reserve running back Travis Barron rushed for 59 yards on seven carries in the fourth quarter.

            Mansfield's Hengehold completed 14-of-29 passes for 205 yards.  Rodney Davis caught four passes for 64 yards, while McNeal rushed for 58 yards on 22 carries and caught four passes for 42 yards.  Ronnie Montgomery had 16 tackles, an interception and two pass breakups.

            Kutztown returns home next week when it hosts West Chester at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
