KU Football Fact Sheet #08-2005 - KU vs. Millersville
Kutztown to Host Millersville for Homecoming

This Week

         Kutztown University's football team will host Millersville University on Saturday, October 22, for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup.  Kickoff is set for 1:05 PM at University Field.  It will be homecoming and Hall of Fame day at Kutztown.

         Kutztown is coming off a 42-14 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.  The setback dropped KU's record to 1-6 overall, 1-3 in the PSAC East.  

Millersville suffered a 21-15 loss at Slippery Rock Saturday.  The Marauders come to KU with a 3-5 record, including a 1-2 PSAC East mark.  MU has also lost to Delaware State (38-6), Shippensburg (23-17), East Stroudsburg (17-13) and West Chester (27-7). The Marauders have wins over Indiana (PA) 28-9, Glenville State (21-20) and Cheyney (31-7).  

 Homecoming and Hall of Fame Day

Saturday will be homecoming for Kutztown University.  In addition to the homecoming festivities, KU's six new Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized at halftime of the game vs. Millersville.  This year's class, which will be inducted Friday night, includes Dr. Dennis J. Bonser ('63), a 1,000 point scorer in men's basketball and two-year starter in baseball; the late Harry Hoch (1905), a standout pitcher who went on to play Major League Baseball; William Nill ('62), a two-way standout and team leader in football; Ryan Vogelsong (1996-98), an All-America pitcher and current Major League Baseball player; Amy Wahl (2000), a record-setting guard in women's basketball; and Tara Lynn Crozier-Wallick ('98), a national champion and multiple-time All-America thrower for the women's track & field team.  

Electronic Coverage

The game will be broadcast live on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading.  Mitch Gerhart and Bernie Driscoll will call the action.  Listeners throughout the world can also hear the broadcast on KU's Website at kubears.com.  The broadcast will begin 15 minutes before kickoff.

KUTV (Service Electric Channel 24, Hometown Utilicom Channel 44) will also televise the game live and on tape-delay in Kutztown and Eastern Berks County.   The game will be rebroadcast on Sunday at 6:00 PM, Monday at 3:00 PM and Tuesday at noon. 

The Coaches

Dave Keeny (Kutztown, '82) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Golden Bear football program.  Keeny has a 37-43 career record.  He has the third-most coaching victories in school history.  Keeny is 2-5 against Millersville.

Joe Trainer (Gettysburg, '81) is in his first season at the helm at Millersville.  Trainer came to MU from Villanova, where he was the defensive coordinator. 

The Series

This game will mark the 79th meeting between Kutztown and Millersville, dating back to 1903.  MU holds a 54-21-3 advantage in the series.  Millersville won last year's thriller, 38-37, when Matt Scartozzi's 30 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Randall Eggleton as time expired.  KU fell behind 19-7 in the first half, stormed back to score 30 straight points, before Millersville mounted its own comeback with three late touchdowns to record the one-point win.  Maurice Adams rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown and James Brooks caught six passes for 86 yards.  CB Justin Gibbs returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown.  Juan Jones rushed for 63 yards and five touchdowns, and Brandon Shelton returned an interception for a TD for MU.   Kutztown won the last meeting between the teams at KU, 17-0 in 2003.  

 Notable

Kutztown is 5-2 in homecoming games under head coach Dave Keeny...four of KU's five October opponents were ranked in last week's Northeast Region Poll (#6 West Chester, #1 Bloomsburg, #2 East Stroudsburg, #9 Edinboro). 

Tracking the Golden BearsOffense

Kutztown's offense struggled against East Stroudsburg on Saturday.  KU managed just 203 yards of total offense, including 86 passing yards.  The Golden Bears did, however, have success on the ground, rushing for 146 yards.  Tony Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) had 97 yards on 19 carries (5.1 yards/carry).  Maurice Adams (so. West Chester/Henderson) had 32 yards on 12 rushes.  QB Kyle Spotts (so. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) completed 10-of-25 passes for 86 yards.  James Brooks (jr. Lancaster/McCaskey) had four catches for 40 yards.  

KU's offense has been held out of the end zone for 9+ quarters.  The last offensive TD came early in the third quarter against West Chester on October 1.  For the season, the Golden Bears are averaging 311.6 yards per game, including 179.1 passing and 132.4 rushing.  Spotts has completed 122-of-254 passes for 1,254 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He has been picked off nine times.  Larry Baumgardner (so. New Oxford/New Oxford) has caught 32 passes for 367 yards and seven TDs.  Brooks has 30 catches for 352 yards and a score.  TE Jason Henley (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) has 13 grabs for 108 yards and a TD.  

Adams leads the ground game with 482 yards and two TDs on 101 carries.  He also has 12 catches for 92 yards.  Bria has 348 yards and a score on 83 rushes, and 12 catches for 49 yards.  

KU's offensive line consists of tackles Dustin Woodward (jr. Lancaster/Penn Manor) and Charlie Kehs (sr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown), guards Adam Ogorek (sr. West Chester/Henderson) and Brian Long (jr. Souderton/Souderton), and center Raymond Yannuzzi (jr. Wallingford/Strath Haven). 

Defense

Kutztown's defense put up a valiant effort, but eventually succumbed to East Stroudsburg's high-octane offense.  The Bears held the Warriors scoreless in the first quarter, and gave the team an early lead when Nick Cresta (r-fr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) intercepted a Leroy Azubuike (so. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) deflection.  Cresta returned the pick 25 yards before fumbling into the end zone where teammate Scott Smith (so. New Oxford/Delone Catholic) recovered it for a  touchdown.  The defenders kept KU within 14-8 at halftime.  A fumble forced by Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) and recovered by Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) led to a field goal and pulled KU within 21-14 in the third.  ESU, however, erupted for 21 points the rest of the way to close the door on the upset minded Golden Bears.  Baldwin had 10 tackles, including eight solos.  Hicks had eight stops, while CB Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) notched five hits and two breakups.  Safety Brian Bingnear (so.  Boothwyn/Chichester) had five tackles and LB Tom Cressman (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) recorded four hits and a sack.  

KU's defense allows 386.6 yards by opposing offenses, including 202.3 rushing and 184.3 passing.  Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem) leads the team with 66 tackles.  He has three tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.  Hicks has 63 tackles, including nine for loss, with three forced fumbles and two breakups.  Azubuike has 48 hits, five for loss and three sacks.  Baldwin has chipped in 47 tackles.  He has two interceptions and nine pass breakups for a PSAC-best 11 passes defended.  Mike Grosso (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John) has 38 tackles, 11 for loss, and six sacks.  Bingnear and Smith have 36 and 30 tackles, respectively.  Cresta has 31 stops, with four for loss and two sacks.  Cressman has 31 tackles, including six for loss and five sacks.  Gibbs has six pass breakups, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. 

Special Teams

Ryan Nye (fr. Reading/Holy Name) punted nine times for a 36.7 yard average.  Nye scooped up a bobbled snap on KU's PAT attempt and ran it in for a two-point conversion.  Kicker Matt Scartozzi (sr. Malvern/Bishop Shanahan) connected on field goals from 37 and 30 yards out in the third quarter.  

Scartozzi has connected on 5-of-7 field goals this season, with a long of 42.  He is also 13-of-15 on PATs.  Nye averages 36.9 yards on 48 punts, including seven inside opponents' 20 yardlines.  Gibbs is averaging 20.2 yards on 13 kick returns.  Bria averages 7.7 yards on seven punt returns, while Harbach nets 6.6 yards on seven punt returns.  Baldwin has blocked two kicks, including a punt vs. S. Conn. St. and a field goal attempt in overtime against Clarion.

Scouting the Millersville Marauders

Millersville enters the game against Kutztown with a 3-5 record, including Saturday's PSAC crossover loss at Slippery Rock, 21-15.  MU has lost five of its last six games, with the only victory in the stretch coming against Cheyney. 

Juan Jones carried the Millersville offense against the Rock, running for a career high 231 yards with two touchdowns on 32 rushes.  QB Derek Pope passed just eight times, completing one for 11 yards.  MU special teams kept the Marauders in the game, getting a safety on a blocked punt and setting up a TD on another blocked punt in the second half.  LB Chris Donati led the defense with 10 tackles, including four for loss.  

For the season, Millersville averages 258.6 yards per game, including 135.9 passing and 122.8 rushing.  Jones has 834 yards and 10 touchdowns on 191 carries.  Pope has filled in for starting QB Dan Csencsitz, who has missed three games with a finger injury. Pope is 30-of-62 for 361 yards, two TDs and three interceptions.  Csencsitz, who is not expected to play Saturday, is 61-of-115 for 826 yards, 1 TD and six picks.  Randall Eggleton has 32 catches for 450 yards and two TDs.  Omar Sanders, who has 21 catches for 189 yards, is expected to sit out the game after being ejected vs. SRU.  

Defensively, the Marauders allow 347.6 yards, including 177.5 passing and 170.1 rushing per game.  The Marauders are led defensively by Donati, who has 62 tackles, including 10 for loss and a sack.  LB Marcus Banks has 61 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, a sack and four pass breakups.  LB Mike Cunningham has 54 tackles, including 7.5 for loss.  LB Eric Marshall has 47 hits, with four for loss and three forced fumbles.  CB Walt Hawkins has four interceptions and two breakups, while fellow corner Brandon Shelton has six breakups and two blocked kicks.

Kicker Doug Ruhl is 6-for-6 on field goals, with a long of 44 yards.  Ryan Huber averages 40.9 yards on 14 punts.  With Sanders out, the return duties should be handled by Shelton and Andrew Siggins.

Player of the Week

Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) had 10 tackles, including eight solos, vs. East Stroudsburg.  Baldwin also recovered a fumble that led to a KU field goal in the third quarter.
