Golden Bears Hit the Road for Final Time in 2005 

This Week

The Kutztown University football team will travel to Edinboro University on Saturday, October 29, for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) inter-division matchup.  Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at Sox Harrison Stadium.  The game will be the final one on the road this season for the Golden Bears.

 Kutztown is coming off a tough 23-20 loss to Millersville on Saturday.  The setback dropped KU's record to 1-7 overall, 1-4 in the PSAC East.

Edinboro, ranked #7 in the Northeast Region, defeated Slippery Rock, 24-7, on Saturday. The Fighting Scots improved to 6-2 overall, 4-1 in the PSAC West with the victory.  Edinboro also has wins over West Virginia Tech (47-0), Tiffin (42-7), Shippensburg (16-0), Clarion (44-0) and Indiana (PA) (20-10).  The Scots have suffered losses to East Stroudsburg (21-23) and California (PA) (26-36). 

Electronic Coverage

The game will be broadcast live on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading.  Matt Santos and Steve Hahn will call the action.  Listeners throughout the world can also hear the broadcast on KU's Website at kubears.com.  The broadcast will begin 15 minutes before kickoff. 

The Coaches

Dave Keeny (Kutztown, '82) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Golden Bear football program.  Keeny has a 37-44 career record.  He has the third-most coaching victories in school history.  Keeny is 1-2 against Edinboro.

Lou Tepper (Rutgers, '67) has a 38-26 record in six years at Edinboro. The former head coach at the University of Illinois, Tepper has a 63-57-2 career record in 11 seasons. He is 2-1 against Kutztown.  

The Series

Edinboro and Kutztown have met just five times, in 1988, 1989, 2002, 2003 and last year.  The Scots leads the series, 3-2.  Edinboro won last year's meeting, 23-14, at KU.  Andre Burke rushed for 159 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown to seal the Scots' victory.  James Brooks returned a kickoff 93 yards as KU took a 14-7 lead less than five minutes into the first quarter.  Kicker Kody Robertson booted three field goals to chip away at the lead.  KU's Jeremy Copeland was intercepted four times in the game.  Jeremy Wesley caught six passes for 115 yards and a TD.   Greg Mitchell had 16 tackles.  The Scots also defeated KU 56-3 two seasons ago at University Field.  The last time the teams met at Edinboro in 2002, Kutztown won, 14-10, behind two second-half TDs by Stephen Gammage.   

Notable

Four of KU's five October opponents were ranked in last week's Northeast Region Poll (#6 West Chester, #1 Bloomsburg, #2 East Stroudsburg, #7 Edinboro).another 2005 opponent, Southern Connecticut State, was ranked #8...Kutztown is 0-4 in 2005 and winless in its last seven games decided by seven points or less dating to 2003...KU is 1-7 for the first time since 1993. 

Tracking the Golden Bears

Offense

The struggles for Kutztown's offense continued against Millersville on Saturday.  KU managed just 71 yards of total offense, KU's lowest yardage output since gaining 51 yards against Millersville in 1993.  KU had just seven first downs, allowed seven sacks and turned the ball over four times on fumbles.  Kutztown had 12 rushing yards and 59 passing yards in the game.  The Bears had just one drive over 15 yards, a 30-yard possession that resulted in a field goal.  QB Kyle Spotts (so. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) was 6-of-16 for 43 yards before leaving with an injury in the fourth quarter after a sack.  Rookie backup Shane Martin (fr. New Holland/Garden Spot) saw his first action of the season in relief.  He was 1-for-2 for 16 yards, but was sacked four times.  James Brooks (jr. Lancaster/McCaskey) caught three passes for 29 yards, while Larry Baumgardner (so. New Oxford/New Oxford) had two grabs for 28 yards.  Maurice Adams (so. West Chester/Henderson) rushed for 38 yards on 16 carries.  

KU's offense has been held out of the end zone for 13+ quarters.  The last offensive TD came at the 10:26 mark of the third quarter against West Chester on October 1.  That's a span of 205:26 of game time.  For the season, the Golden Bears are averaging 281.5 yards per game, including 164.1 passing and 117.4 rushing.  Spotts has completed 128-of-270 passes for 1,297 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He has been picked off nine times.  Baumgardner has caught 34 passes for 395 yards and seven TDs.  Brooks has 33 catches for 395 yards and a score.  TE Jason Henley (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) has 14 grabs for 113 yards and a TD.  

Adams leads the ground game with 520 yards and two TDs on 117 carries.  He also has 12 catches for 92 yards.  Tony Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) has 358 yards and a score on 89 rushes, and 13 catches for 46 yards.  

KU's offensive line consists of tackles Dustin Woodward (jr. Lancaster/Penn Manor) and Charlie Kehs (sr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown), guards Adam Ogorek (sr. West Chester/Henderson) and Brian Long (jr. Souderton/Souderton), and center Raymond Yannuzzi (jr. Wallingford/Strath Haven). 

Defense

Kutztown's defense did all it could to keep the Golden Bears in the game, but Millersville was able to make enough plays to overcome the defensive effort.  The Golden Bears allowed 193 rushing yards, but negated 88 of those yards on several big plays.  KU returned two fumbles for touchdowns.  DE Mark Irwin (r-fr. Newtown/Council Rock North)  scooped up a botched punt snap at the two yardline and returned it for a TD and a 10-7 lead. He finished with four tackles, two for loss and a sack.  In the fourth quarter, LB Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) forced a fumble inside the KU 10 yardline.  It was scooped up by LB Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) and returned 89 yards for a touchdown, equaling the second-longest fumble return in school history.  Mitchell had six tackles, one for loss and a breakup, while Hicks ended with nine tackles, two for loss and a breakup.  Safety Brian Bingnear (so. Boothwyn/Chichester) notched a 27-yard tackle for loss after another botched punt snap, setting up a KU field goal.  He had nine tackles.  LB Tom Cressman (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) had 10 tackles, including a sack.  DE Mike Grosso (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John)  had nine hits, with two for loss.  CB Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) had seven tackles, while LB Dan Chominski (jr. Boothwyn/Chichester) notched seven stops and forced a fumble.  Leroy Azubuike (so. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) had six tackles, with two for loss.  

For the season,  KU's defense allows 377.2 yards by opposing offenses, including 189.2 rushing and 188.0 passing.  Mitchell and Hicks share the team lead with 72 tackles each.  Mitchell has four tackles for loss, three breakups and two forced and recovered fumbles.  Hicks has 11 tackles for loss, three breakups and three forced fumbles.  Azubuike has recorded 54 tackles, seven for loss and three sacks.  Safety Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) has 52 tackles, two interceptions and nine breakups.  He has forced and recovered two fumbles, returning one 98 yards for a touchdown vs. Clarion.  Grosso leads the team with 13 tackles for loss and six sacks among his 47 stops.  Cressman shares the team lead with six sacks and has seven tackles for loss.  Bingnear has 45 hits, while DT Nick Cresta (r-fr. Wallingford/Strath Haven) has 37 tackles, four for loss and two sacks.  Gibbs has 29 tackles, two for loss, two interceptions and six breakups.   

Special Teams

KU's special teams were also key in keeping the game close vs. Millersville.  In addition to the fumble return for a TD and 27-yard tackle for loss on botched punt attempts, Baldwin blocked a punt and an extra point.  Bria notched a season-long 17 yard punt return to set up a field goal.  He had 18 yards on three punt returns, and 64 yards on three kick returns.  Gibbs equaled is season best with a 38-yard kickoff return.  Matt Scartozzi (sr. Malvern/Bishop Shanahan) connected on two field goal attempts from 29 and 31 yards.  Ryan Nye (fr. Reading/Holy Name) averaged 33.2 yards on eight punts.  

Scartozzi is 7-of-9 on field goal attempts, with a long of 42 yards.  He has hit his last five attempts.  He is also 15-of-17 on PAT kicks.  Nye averages 36.4 yards on 56 punts.  Bria nets 7.2 yards on 10 punt returns and 19.6 yards on nine kick returns.  Gibbs averages 21.5 yards on 14 kick returns.  

Baldwin has blocked four kicks, a field goal in overtime against Clarion, a punt vs. S. Conn. St. and the punt and extra point against Millersville. 

Scouting the Edinboro Fighting Scots

Edinboro enters Saturday's game coming off a 24-7 win over PSAC West rival Slippery Rock.  Kelvin Collins rushed for 133 yards on 25 carries, while Justin Bouch completed 13-of-20 passes for 122 yards and a TD.  The Fighting Scots sealed the victory with fourth-quarter touchdowns on a fumble recovery in the end zone by DE Greg MacCann after a sack by LB Jim Soltis, and a blocked punt recovered in the end zone by NG A.J. Cousins.  Edinboro sacked Rock quarterbacks nine times, including two by DT Chris Amico and 1.5 by cousins.  Safety Tom Davidson had two interceptions.  

For the season, Edinboro leads the PSAC in scoring defense (10.4 points allowed/game), total defense (225.8 yards/game), rushing defense (55.6 yards/game) and sacks (28).  LB Ben Stroup has 62 tackles, including 13 for loss and 4.5 sacks.  Soltis has 56 tackles, with 10.5 for loss.  Cousins has 37 hits, with 7.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks.  LB Seth Fragale, the 2004 PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year, has 35 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and two sacks.  CB Chris Avery has six interceptions, while Davidson has four picks.  

Offensively, the Scots average 364.4 yards per game, including 199.2 rushing and 165.1 passing.  Bouch has completed 101-of-182 passes for 1,135 yards and 11 TDs.  He has thrown seven interceptions.  Ryan Valasek has 20 catches for 335 yards and four scores.  C.J. Trivisonno has 17 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns.  Ulysee Davis has 621 yards and seven TDs on 129 rushes.  Collins has 577 yards and four scores on 108 carries.  

Kody Robertson is 7-of-12 on field goals, with a long of 34.  He averages 36.0 yards on 30 punts.  Rodney Stevenson nets 24.5 yards on 10 kick returns, and Deonte Peters gains 8.2 yards on 10 punt returns.

Player of the Week

Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) had nine tackles, including two for losses of two yards.  He also returned a fumble 89 yards for a touchdown and had a pass breakup.
