Golden Bears, 15 Seniors to Wrap Up 2005 Season 

This Week

         The Kutztown University football team will host Cheyney University for the 2005 season finale on Nov. 5.  The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup is set to kickoff at 1:05 PM at Kutztown's University Field.

         Kutztown lost its fifth-straight game, 33-7, to Edinboro last Saturday.  The loss dropped KU's record to 1-8 overall.  The Golden  Bears, 1-4 in the PSAC East, will be looking to avoid its first one-win season since going 1-9 in 1989.  

Cheyney dropped its seventh-straight game, 40-3, to East Stroudsburg on Saturday.  The Wolves are 2-8 overall, 0-5 in the PSAC East.  Cheyney has also lost to Lock Haven (16-17), Nicholls State (0-54), West Chester (0-64), Millersville (7-31), Mansfield (17-38), Bloomsburg (14-48) and California (PA) (3-49).  The Wolves have wins over West Virginia State (32-7) and St. Paul's (13-10) back in September. 

Electronic Coverage

The game will be broadcast live on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading.  Mitch Gerhart and Matt Santos will call the action.  Listeners throughout the world can also hear the broadcast on KU's Website at kubears.com.  The broadcast will begin 15 minutes before kickoff.

KUTV (Service Electric Channel 24, Hometown Utilicom Channel 44) will also televise the game live and on tape-delay in Kutztown and Eastern Berks County.   The game will be rebroadcast on Sunday at 6:00 PM, Monday at 3:00 PM and Tuesday at noon. 

The Seniors

The Golden Bears will say goodbye to 15 seniors, who will play in their final game on Saturday.  They are safety Michael Baldwin (Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech), DT Chris Branco (Hellertown/Saucon Valley), RB Tony Bria (Warminster/William Tennent), TE Andre Coles (Philadelphia/Abraham Lincoln), TE Mike Costello (Yardville, NJ/Steinert), DT Tony Garipoli (Reading/Antietem), LB Drew Hicks (Allentown/William Allen), OL Don Keen (Lancaster/McCaskey), OL Charlie Kehs (Gilbertsville/Boyertown), CB Matt Millard (Secane/Ridley), LB Greg Mitchell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic), OL Adam Ogorek (West Chester/Henderson), K Matt Scartozzi (Malvern/Bishop Shanahan), DT Warren Spivey (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) and OL Tom Sweeney (Sweedsboro, NJ/Kingsway).

 The Coaches

Dave Keeny (Kutztown, '82) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Golden Bear football program.  Keeny has a 37-45 career record.  He has the third-most coaching victories in school history.  Keeny is 7-0 against Cheyney.

Tim Newsom (West Virginia, '92) is 2-8 in his first season as head coach at Cheyney.  Newsom came from Johnson C. Smith, where he was defensive coordinator for seven seasons. 

The Series

This game marks the 56th meeting between Kutztown and Cheyney, dating back to 1949.  Kutztown holds a 44-10-1 advantage, taking the last 11 meetings.  Kutztown won last year's meeting, 38-13 at Cheyney.  Maurice Adams set a school record with 259 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries.  Matt Millard had six tackles, an interception, and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.  Cheyney QB Derrick Murry tossed two touchdown passes.   

Notable

KU's win at Cheyney last year snapped an eight-year losing streak in season finales...KU finished the month of October 0-5, playing four games against regionally ranked opponents (#2 Bloomsburg, #3 West Chester, #4 East Stroudsburg, #7 Edinboro)...KU's five October opponents have a combined record of 36-12...another 2005 opponent, Southern Connecticut State, was ranked #8...KU is 1-8 for the first time since 1993.

 Tracking the Golden Bears

Offense

Kutztown's offense struggled against the PSAC's #1 defense last week against Edinboro.  The Golden Bears allowed nine sacks. Kutztown netted 55 rushing yards, despite losing 61 yards on sacks.  KU's offense did get into the end zone for the first time in four games, with a six-yard TD pass from quarterback Shane Martin (fr. New Holland/Garden Spot) to receiver Brett Harbach (jr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) late in the first half.  The TD snapped a stretch of 234 minutes, 59 seconds since KU's last TD against West Chester on October 1.  It was the first TD pass for Martin, who made his initial collegiate start in place of the injured Kyle Spotts (so. Tamaqua/Tamaqua).  It was also Harbach's first TD catch for the Golden Bears.  Martin finished with 12 completions on 20 attempts for 143 yards.  Harbach had five catches for 35 yards.  Brent Howard (fr. Perkiomenville/Boyertown) had two catches, both 27 yarders on the scoring dive, for 54 yards.  Larry Baumgardner (so New Oxford/New Oxford) caught three passes for 36 yards.  Tyler Dinnis (fr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West) rushed for 58 yards on nine carries.  Maurice Adams (so. West Chester/Henderson) gained 53 yards on 15 rushes.

KU's offense ranks 10th in the PSAC in total yards per game (272.2), including 110.4 rushing (12th) and 161.8 passing (8th).  Spotts is expected to miss Saturday's game vs. Cheyney as well.  He had completed 128-of-270 passes for 1,297 yards and 11 touchdowns before the injury.  Martin is 13-of-22 for 159 yards and a TD.  Baumgardner leads the team with 37 catches for 431 yards and seven touchdowns.  James Brooks (jr. Lancaster/McCaskey) has33 catches for 381 yards and three scores.  TE Jason Henley (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) has caught 14 passes for 113 yards and a TD.  Harbach has 14 catches for 96 yards.  

KU's running game has been held out of the end zone since scoring twice against Mansfield on September 24.  The Golden Bears have just four TDs on the ground this season.  Adams leads the team with 573 yards and two TDs on 132 carries.  Tony Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) has 358 yards and a TD, but sat out last week vs. Edinboro due to injury.  Dinnis has 132 yards on just 18 carries, 7.3 yards per touch.  

Defense

Kutztown's defense played well against Edinboro, in spite of the 33-7 final.  The Golden Bears allowed just two scoring drives over 35 yards, with four of the Scots' six scoring possessions starting in KU territory.  The defense allowed 340 yards of offense by EU.  LB Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) had nine tackles, including seven solos.  DE Mike Grosso (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John) had six tackles, including one for loss.  LBs Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) and Tom Cressman (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) had five tackles each.  CB Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) had a tackle for loss among his two tackles, with a pass breakup.  

For the season,  KU's defense allows 373.1 yards by opposing offenses, which ranks 10th in the PSAC.  The Golden Bears allow 190.6 yards rushing (8th) and 182.6 passing (10th).  Hicks leads the team with 81 tackles, including 52 solos.  He has 11 tackles for loss, three breakups and three fumble recoveries.  Hicks returned a fumble for a touchdown vs. Millersville.  Mitchell has 77 tackles, with four for loss, three breakups and two forced fumbles.  He has recovered two fumbles.  Mitchell has 286 career tackles, 12 shy of cracking into KU's top five career tackles list.  DE Leroy Azubuike (so. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) has 58 hits, with seven for loss and three sacks.  Safety Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) has 56 stops with two interceptions and nine breakups.  He has forced and recovered two fumbles, including a school-record 98 yard return for a TD vs. Clarion.  Grosso has 53 tackles, with a team-high 14 tackles for loss and six sacks.  Cressman shares the lead with six sacks, and has 46 tackles.  Safety Brian Bingnear (so. Boothwyn/Chichester) has 49 hits.  DT Nick Cresta (Wallingford/Strath Haven) has 40 tackles, including four for loss and two sacks.  Gibbs has two interceptions and seven breakups. 

Special Teams

Baldwin topped the special teams effort against Edinboro, blocking a field goal.  Ryan Nye (fr. Reading/Holy Name) had six punts for an average of 40.7 yards, including a career long 63 yarder.  Two other punts were blocked, with one recovered in the end zone for a Scot TD and the other leading to a field goal.  Gibbs had 39 yards on two kickoff returns.  

Baldwin has blocked five kicks this season, including two punts, two field goals and an extra point.  Nye is averaging 36.8 yards on 62 punts.  Kicker Matt Scartozzi (sr. Malvern/Bishop Shanahan) has connected on 7-of-9 field goals, with a long of 42.  He has hit his last five attempts and is 15-of-17 on PAT kicks.  Scartozzi, who has a school record 24 career field goals, also is the most accurate kicker in school history, connecting on 63.2% of his career attempts (24-38).  Gibbs averages 21.2 yards on 16 kickoff returns, while Harbach nets 6.0 yards on nine punt returns.   

Scouting the Cheyney Wolves

Cheyney dropped a 40-3 decision vs. East Stroudsburg last Saturday.  The Wolves took an early lead on a 20-yard field goal by John Riley, but ESU rattled off 40 unanswered points the rest of the way.  QB Derrick Murry completed 11-of-21 passes for 118 yards.  WR Dominique Curry caught five passes for 72 yards.  RB Chinoso Okoro gained 59 yards on 25 carries.  DB Tyree Cooper had 15 tackles, including nine solos.  Ashley Lord had five stops, with two sacks.  LB Robert Edwards had eight tackles, with a fumble recovery and a breakup.  Kelvin Quick notched 12 tackles.

For the season Cheyney averages 187.6 yards of offense (13th in the PSAC), including 75.2 rushing (14th) and 112.4 passing (13th).  Murry has completed 89-of-195 passes for 1,043 yards and seven touchdowns.  He has been picked off 11 times.  Curry is his favorite receiver, with 32 catches for 563 yards and four TDs.  Jason Harris has 16 grabs for 188 yards and three scores.  Billy Mitchell has gained 441 yards on 113 carries, with two TDs.  He also has hauled in 16 passes for 136 yards and a TD.  Cleveland Richardson has 305 yards on 103 carries.

The Wolf defense allows 373.1 yards per game (11th in PSAC), including 200.6 rushing (11th) and 185.0 passing (11th).  LB Brandon Hawkins leads all PSAC players with 100 tackles, including 15 for loss and 1.5 sacks.  Cooper has 74 tackles, while Joe Okafor has 72 hits with four for loss.  Edwards has notched 65 tackles, with six for loss, two sacks and four pass breakups.  LB Otis Everett has 65 tackles, with eight for loss.  Jamar Johnson leads the team with 5.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.  

Cooper averages 15.0 yards on 32 kickoff returns and 9.1 yards on 17 punt returns.  Riley is 6-of-8 on field goals, with a long of 46 yards.  He also punts, netting 33.1 yards on 80 boots.

Player of the Week

Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) repeats as the Player of the Game for the second straight week.  He had nine tackles, including seven solos, against Edinboro.
