Clarion (1-1) 29
Kutztown (0-2)	23 4-OT

CLARION, PA – Brandon Dando scored on a three-yard run in the fourth
overtime to give Clarion a 29-23 win over Kutztown in a Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference inter-division game at Memorial Stadium.

Dando rolled out on third and goal, and outran three Golden Bear
defenders to the pylon in the corner of the endzone for the score.
Kutztown’s final attempt followed. After Maurice Adams rushed for
three yards on first down, three Kyle Spotts passes fell incomplete to
end the game.

Kutztown led 16-9 in the fourth quarter, but Clarion evened the score
on a one-yard run by Dando with 5:14 left. The tying drive was helped
by three costly KU penalties totaling 35 yards. Clarion had a chance
to win it in regulation, but Kyle Snoke’s 43 yard field goal attempt
was wide left as the clock expired.

Neither team scored in the first overtime period. Kutztown’s Matt
Scartozzi’s 25 yard field goal attempt missed wide right. On
Clarion’s first play, running back David Murzynski coughed up the
ball. Justin Gibbs recovered and returned it 50 yards, but was forced
out of bounds to end the first OT.

Tyrone Buckner fueled Clarion’s next possession. He rushed seven
times for all 25 yards, including the final two for a touchdown.
Kutztown answered, scoring its only points in overtime. KU converted
a fourth-and-eight with a 13-yard pass from Spotts to James Brooks.
Spotts hit Brooks three plays later for a six yard touchdown.

In the third overtime, both team’s possessions ended on blocked field
goals. Kutztown’s possession stalled at the 18. Matt Scartozzi’s 35
yard field goal attempt was blocked by Clarion’s Dwaon Woodard.
Clarion’s Snoke attempted a 36 yard attempt, but it was blocked by
Michael Baldwin.

In regulation, Kutztown opened the scoring on Scartozzi’s 42 yard
field goal with 12:06 left in the first. The goal tied the school’s
career field goal record of 19 held by Steve Kratz (1989-92).

The Eagles answered on their next possession, marching 54 yards on
seven plays, capped by a 12-yard run by David Murzynski, to make it 7-
3 with 8:35 left in the first.

Clarion was driving to take the lead in the second quarter, but Drew
Hicks forced a fumble by Murzynski at the one yard line. It was
scooped up by Baldwin and the two and he raced for a school-record 98
yard fumble return TD, making it 10-7 with 10:00 left in the second.
Kutztown took advantage of a shanked Clarion punt late in the first
half, taking over on the Clarion 26 after a 13 yard punt. A pass
interference call, and a 10-yard run by Adams set up Spotts’ one-yard
quarterback sneak.

Clarion’s Woodard, however, blocked Scartozzi’s PAT attempt. It was
scooped up by Herb Carroway and returned for a defensive two-point
conversion – the first time that has happened against KU since 1988.
KU’s lead was just 16-9 with 55 ticks left in the first.

The three-point swing made a difference, as Clarion tied the score
with a TD in the fourth to send the game to OT.

Clarion outgained Kutztown 385-188, Dando was 15-of-298 for 143 yards
and rushed for 18 yards and two TDs. Buckner rushed for 106 yards on
39 carries.
Adams had 62 yards on 19 carries. Spotts was 21-of-421 for 152
yards. Brooks caught nine passes for 66 yards. Hicks led all players
with 16 tackles, including five for loss.

The game was Kutztown’s first-ever multi-overtime game, and just the
fifth OT contest in school history. KU is 0-5 in those overtime
games..

Kutztown hosts Southern Connecticut State next Saturday at 1:05 PM.
