Southern Connecticut State (1-1) 31
Kutztown (0-3) 28
KUTZTOWN, PA - Shawn Harris rushed for 174 yards and the go-ahead touchdown as Southern Connecticut State defeated Kutztown University, 31-28, in a non-conference matchup at University Field Saturday afternoon.
KU had a chance to tie the game, but a fumbled snap on a 20-yard field goal attempt with 3:12 to play ended Kutztown's hopes.
Harris carried the ball 22 times and scored on a 32-yard run to cap a four-play, 50 yard drive with 2:15 left in the third quarter. The score put the Owls up 24-20. SCSU extended its lead with what proved to be the difference, when Rory Palmer scored on a one-yard run with 9:56 left in the fourth.
Kutztown's Larry Baumgarder, who caught 10 passes for 146 yards on the day, caught his second touchdown pass, a 25-yarder from Kyle Spotts with 7:02 to play. Spotts then hit James Brooks for the two-point conversion to make it 31-28. The drive was extended when Jason Henley caught a five-yard pass on third and six, but fumbled the ball forward and recovered it at the 32 for a first down.
On SCSU's next possession, Harris broke through the line and gained 27 yards, before Michael Baldwin stripped the ball away and KU's Greg Mitchell recovered at Kutztown's 21 with 5:46 to play.
Kutztown drove 74 yards, including a 26-yard catch by Baumgardner on a third down and a tremendous 26-yard grab by Brooks at the four yardline. The drive, however, stalled and Matt Scartozzi came on the attempt a game-tying 20-yard field goal. Ray Yannuzzi's snap was low, and holder Ryan Nye was unable to place the ball. He picked it up, and attempted to run, but was tackled at the five yardline by the Owls' Dwight Bailey.
SCSU picked up a pair of first downs and ran out the clock.
The first quarter saw three rapid fire TDs in the first 3+ minutes. KU's Maurice Adams opened the scoring on the third play of the game, breaking through the middle for a 58-yard TD run. The Owls tied it two plays later with a 64-yard pass from Steve Armstrong to Jim Lukowiak. Spotts and Baumgardner hooked up on their first TD connection four plays later for a 37 yard score with 11:47 left in the first.
In the second quarter, Baldwin blocked a punt at the Southern Connecticut eight yardline. Spotts hit TE Jason Henley on the next play. Scartozzi's PAT was wide right, making it 20-7 with 12:46 left in the half.
The Owls took advantage of a special teams miscue on Kutztown's part later in the quarter. Punter Ryan Nye couldn't come up with a low snap, and was tackled at KU's 40. Nine plays later, Palmer went in from two yards out to make it 20-14 with 7:27 left in the second.
SCSU's Ed Arias hit a 35 yard field goal with 13:10 to play in the third to make it 20-17.
The game was the third-straight that KU has lost by seven or fewer points. The Golden Bears open the season 0-3, for the first time since 1993.
SCSU's Steve Armstrong completed 15-of-32 passes for 187 yards. Palmer rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries.
Spotts was 20-of-43 for 258 yards and three TDs. Adams rushed for 97 yards on 16 carries. Baldwin had five tackles, a forced fumble, interception and four pass breakups in addition to his blocked punt.
Kutztown is off next Saturday before traveling to Mansfield on Sept 24.
