KU Football Fact Sheet #04-2005 - KU vs. Mansfield 

Golden Bears Set to Open PSAC East Slate at Mansfield 

This Week

        Kutztown University's football team returns to action this Saturday, September 24, when it travels to Mansfield University for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Opener.  Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at MU's Van Norman Field.  

        Kutztown, coming off a bye week, lost to Southern Connecticut State, 31-28, on September 10.  The Golden Bears are 0-3 on the season.

        Mansfield is coming off a tough 15-12 loss at Clarion on Saturday, Sept. 17.  The Mountaineers are also 0-3.   

Electronic Coverage

        The game will be broadcast live on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading.  Matt Santos and Steve Hahn will call the action.  Listeners throughout the world can also hear the broadcast on KU's Website at kubears.com.  The broadcast will begin 15 minutes before kickoff. 

The Coaches

        Dave Keeny (Kutztown, '82) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Golden Bear football program.  Keeny has a 36-40 career record.  He has the third-most coaching victories in school history.  Keeny is 6-1 against Mansfield.

        Jim Shiffer (Mansfield '89) is 1-12 in his second season as head coach at Mansfield.  Shiffer was the offensive line coach at Kutztown during the 2002 season.  He is 0-1 as a head coach against the Golden Bears. 

The Series

        This game will mark the 62nd meeting between Kutztown and Mansfield, dating back to 1931. KU holds a 34-24-3 advantage, including last year's 45-10 win at University Field.  RB Tony Bria was injured early in the contest and missed he rest of the season.  Maurice Adams stepped in and rushed for 89 yards and a TD on 13 carries.  Stephen Gammage rushed for 113 yards and two scores.  Greg Mitchell had 11 tackles, while Nate Baublitz had five tackles, two sacks, and forced and recovered a fumble.  Poohbear McNeal rushed for 102 yards on 21 carries for Mansfield.  In the last meeting between the teams at Van Norman Field, Mansfield snapped KU's nine-game winning streak vs. the Mounties with a 45-24 decision in 2003.  McNeal rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns.  KU's last win at MU came in 2000 (27-6), as the teams have played three of the last four times at Kutztown.   

Notable

        Kutztown is 0-3 for the first time since 1993...the hard-luck Golden Bears have lost the three games this year by a total of 16 points.it is the closest stretch of consecutive losses since Kutztown dropped three-straight games by a total of 13 points in 1985...KU hopes to avoid its first 0-4 start since 1987...for the fourth-straight game this season, both Kutztown and its opponent will be looking for its first win of the year. 

Tracking the Golden Bears

Offense

        For the season, the Golden Bears are averaging 261.3 yards per game, including 187.3 passing and 74.0 rushing.  

        QB Kyle Spotts (so. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) has completed 55-of-123 passes for 562 yards and four touchdowns.  He has been picked off six times.  WR Larry Baumgardner (so. New Oxford/New Oxford) has caught 14 passes for 187 yards and two TDs.  WR James Brooks (jr. Lancaster/McCaskey), who has played in just two games, has 13 catches fro 125 yards and a score.  WR Mike Zulkowski (jr. Shenandoah/Shenandoah Valley) is averaging 21.4 yards on five receptions.  TE Jason Henley (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) has five grabs for 34 yards and a TD.  

        RB Maurice Adams (so. West Chester/Henderson) leads the ground game.  He is averaging 63.3 yards per game, tallying 190 yards on 51 caries.  He also has six catches for 50 yards.  Tony Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) has 85 yards on 23 carries and 27 yards on eight catches.  

        The Golden Bear offensive line consists of tackles Charlie Kehs (sr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) and Eric Newell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic), guards Adam Ogorek (sr. West Chester/Henderson) and Don Keen (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey), and center Raymond Yannuzzi (jr. Wallingford/Strath Haven). 

Defense

        KU's defense allows 360.7 yards by opposing offenses, including 222.0 yards rushing and 138.7 yards passing.  The Golden Bears, however, rank among the PSAC's leaders in turnover margin at +1.67 per game (13 takeaways).

        Linebackers Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem) and Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) continue to lead the PSAC in tackles.  Mitchell has 40 stops on the season, including 25 solos and two tackles for loss.  He has recovered two fumbles, bringing his career total to 10.  Hicks has 37 hits, 25 solos, with seven tackles behind the line and two pass breakups.   DE Leroy Azubuike (so. E. Stroudsburg/E. Stroudsburg South) has 26 tackles, with three for loss and two sacks.  Safety Brian Bingnear (so. Boothwyn/Chichester) has 22 tackles, while LB Tom Cressman (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) has 21 tackles, including five for loss and four sacks.  A third of Mike Grosso's (jr. Hackettstown/Pope John) 21 tackles have been for loss, including four sacks.  Cressman and Grosso have forced a pair of fumbles each.  Safety Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) has 20 tackles, five pass breakups, an interception and a school-record 98-yard fumble return for a TD vs. Clarion.  He has also forced two fumbles.  CB Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) has two interceptions, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery.  DE Kevin Branco (r-fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) has recovered three fumbles.   

Special Teams

        Kicker Matt Scartozzi (sr. Malvern/Bishop Shanahan) will set KU's career field goals made record with his next three-pointer.  He has 19 in his career, tied with Steve Kratz (1989-92) for the all-time lead.  This season, Scartozzi is 2-for-4 with a long of 42 yards.  He is also 4-of-6 on PAT kicks.  Ryan Nye (fr. Reading/Holy Name) is averaging 36.5 yards on 24 punts.

        Gibbs is averaging 25.5 yards on four kick returns, while Brooks has netted 19.5 yards on two returns.  Bria averages 7.2 yards on four punt returns.

        Baldwin has blocked two kicks, including a punt vs. Southern Connecticut and a field goal attempt in overtime against Clarion. 

Scouting the Mansfield Mountaineers

        Mansfield enters the game with an 0-3 record, coming off a heartbreaking 15-12 loss at Clarion Saturday night.  Mansfield led 12-7 in the final minutes, but the Golden Eagles drove 73 yards, culminating in a one-yard TD run with 22 seconds left.  The TD was the only one the defense allowed in the game, after giving up 88 points the week before vs. California (PA).  Clarion's only other score came on a blocked punt return.   QB John Hengehold had TD passes of 30 and 46 yards to give Mansfield its two scores.  Hengehold completed 13-of-31 passes for 208 yards, but was intercepted three times.  Poohbear McNeal rushed for 129 yards on 27 carries.  WR Tyrone Robinson caught three passes for 86 yards, while Ozzie Mathis had three catches for 41 yards.  DE Keith Slezak had 11 tackles, a TFL, 1/2 sack, a forced fumble and three pass breakups.    

        The Mountaineers average 371.0 yards per game offensively, including 213.7 passing and 157.3 rushing.  McNeal has rushed for 369 yards and two touchdowns on 74 carries.  Hengehold has completed 47-of-94 passes for 555 yards and five scores, with four picks.  RB Rodney Davis has 18 catches for 216 yards and three scores.  Robinson has nine grabs for 111 yards and two TDs.  The offensive line is headed by junior All-PSAC tackle Jamar Foulks (6-4, 321 lbs.).

        Defensively, Mansfield allows 557.7 yards to opponents, including 239.0 rushing and 318.7 passing.  LB Andre Turner has 23 tackles and two pass breakups.  Safety Ryan Kassak has 21 stops, while LB Marc Hunsberger has 18 hits.  LB Jason Zeigler has 17 tackles, including 2.5 for loss.  CB Ronnie Montgomery has one interception.

        Kicker Sean Hair is 0-for-2 on field goal attempts, while punter Brandon Fields averages 40.8 yards per kick.  Montgomery averages 25.2 yards on 20 kick returns.
