Kutztown to Host West Chester for Family Day 

This Week

         Kutztown University's football team will host West Chester University on Saturday, October 1, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest.  Kickoff is set for 1:05 PM at University Field.

         Kutztown is coming off its first win of the season, a 45-18 victory at Mansfield.  The Golden Bears are 1-3 overall, 1-0 in the PSAC East.  

West Chester brings a deceiving 3-2 record to University Field.  The Golden Rams are coming off a 64-0 win over Cheyey.  They also have wins over Clarion (43-14) and Indiana (PA) (30-20).  WCU's two defeats have come at the hands of the #1 team in Division II, North Dakota (41-7), and Division I-AA Delaware (42-21). 

Avalanche is Coming!

The new Golden Bear mascot, Avalanche, will be unveiled for the first time in public at halftime of Saturday's game.  The mascot was designed by Raymond Entertainment Group, whose CEO is David Raymond, the original Phillie Phanatic.  Avalanche is named in honor of the nickname of Kutztown's sports teams from the 1930s to the early 1960s.   

Electronic Coverage

The game will be broadcast live on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading.  Matt Santos and Steve Hahn will call the action.  Listeners throughout the world can also hear the broadcast on KU's Website at kubears.com.  The broadcast will begin 15 minutes before kickoff.  KUTV (Service Electric Channel 24, Hometown Utilicom Channel 44) will also televise the game live and on tape-delay in Kutztown and Eastern Berks County.   The rebroadcast schedule will be posted on kubears.com.  

The Coaches

Dave Keeny (Kutztown, '82) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Golden Bear football program.  Keeny has a 37-40 career record.  He has the third-most coaching victories in school history.  Keeny is 3-4 against West Chester.  

Bill Zwaan (Delaware, '79) is in his third season at the helm at West Chester.   He is 22-9 at West Chester and holds a 76-23 record in nine seasons of coaching, including six season at Widener.  Zwaan is 1-1 against Kutztown.  

The Series

This game will mark the 51st meeting between Kutztown and West Chester. West Chester holds a 42-7-1 advantage in the series, which dates back to 1937. West Chester won last year's meeting, 51-9, at WCU.  The Rams racked up 325 rushing yards, including 140 by Dean Millard and 68 by fullback Josh Fidler.  Stephen Gammage rushed for 93 yards and a TD, while Greg Mitchell had 10 tackles for KU.  Prior to last year, KU had won three of the last four meetings between the teams.   In 2003, the last time the teams met at University Field, Matt Scartozzi booted a 38 yard field goal with 0:50 left in the fourth quarter in KU's 17-16 win.  WCU has not won at University Field since 1998 (34-21), as four of the last six meetings have been at WCU. 

Notable

Saturday will be KU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Organ Donor Awareness Day...for the first time this season, KU plays a game in which both teams are not looking for their first wins...last week's game at Mansfield was the first KU played on natural grass this season...KU improves to 5-1 after bye weeks and 4-4 in PSAC East openers under head coach Dave Keeny. 

Tracking the Golden Bears

Offense

The Golden Bears got the offense clicking on all cylinders against Mansfield.  KU racked up 582 yards of total offense, including 361 rushing and 221 passing.  It was the first game over 500 yards of offense for KU since 2000.  WR Larry Baumgardner (so. New Oxford/New Oxford) caught four touchdown passes, tying the single-game KU record held by Tony Santella (1986) and Mark Steinmeyer (1991).  Baumgardner finished with 93 yards on nine catches.  QB Kyle Spotts (so. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) completed 24-of-31 passes (77.4%) for 221 yards and four touchdowns.  He completed passes to six different receivers.  James Brooks (jr. Lancaster/McCaskey) had five catches for 40 yards.  Running backs Maurice Adams (so. West Chester/Henderson) and Tony Bria (sr. Warminster/William Tennent) each rushed for over 100 yards.  Adams rushed for 143 yards on 14 carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run.  Bria gained 102 yards on 19 rushes, including a one-yard TD plunge.  Reserve backs Travis Barron (so. Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan) and Tyler Dinnis (fr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West) also starred.  Barron rushed for 59 yards on seven carries, while Dinnis rushed for 41 yards on five runs.

For the season, the Golden Bears are averaging 341.5 yards per game, including 1195.8 passing and 145.8 rushing.  Spotts has completed 79-of-154 passes for 783 yards and eight touchdowns.  He has been picked off seven times.  Baumgardner has caught 23 passes for 280 yards and six TDs.  Brooks has 18 catches for 165 yards and a score.  TE Jason Henley (jr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) has eight grabs for 62 yards and a TD.  

Adams leads the ground game with 333 yards and two TDs on 65 carries.  He also has 10 catches for 80 yards.  Bria has 187 yards and a score on 43 rushes, and 10 catches for 47 yards.  

The Golden Bear offensive line paved the way for one of the best statistical performances in KU history, despite having two starters out with injury.   Guard Adam Ogorek (sr. West Chester/Henderson) and tackle Eric Newell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) were both sidelined.  Guard Eric Barr (jr. Orefield/Northwestern Lehigh) and tackle Brian Long (jr. Souderton/Souderton) moved into the lineup.  Other starters included Charlie Kehs (sr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown), Don Keen (sr. Lancaster/McCaskey) and Raymond Yannuzzi (jr. Wallingford/Strath Haven). 
Defense

The Golden Bear defense allowed just one touchdown in the first half.  By the time Mansfield added two second-half TDs, KU led by more than 20 points.  Kutztown was hurt by big plays, with MU having plays of at least 29 yards on each of its three scoring drives.  KU held Mansfield's running game in check, allowing just 96 yards.  DE Leroy Azubuike (so. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) led the way with seven tackles, including a 10-yard sack.  DE Mike Grosso (jr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John) also had a 10-yard sack among his six tackles.  LB Greg Mitchell (sr. Bethlehem/Bethlehem) had six tackles, with tackle for loss.  DE Kevin Branco (r-fr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) had five tackles, including two for loss and a sack.   Safety Michael Baldwin (sr. Philadelphia/Dobbins Tech) had an interception and two pass breakups.  CB Louie Gibbs (jr. Pottstown/Pottstown) forced a fumble that was recovered by DT Chris Branco (sr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley).  

KU's defense allows 363.2 yards by opposing offenses, including 190.5 rushing and 172.8 passing.  The Golden Bears are tied for the PSAC lead in sacks with 15.  The Golden Bears have PSAC leaders in four individual defensive categories.  Mitchell leads the league in tackles with 11.5 per game.  He also has three tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.  Grosso leads the PSAC in sacks with five. He has eight tackles for loss among his 27 stops.  Kevin Branco leads the PSAC with three fumble recoveries.  He also has 15 tackles, four for loss and two sacks.  Baldwin tops the conference in passes defended, with seven pass breakups and two interceptions.  He has 21 tackles.  LB Drew Hicks (sr. Allentown/William Allen) has 42 tackles and seven tackles for loss.  Azubuike has 33 hits with four behind the line and three sacks.  Safety Brian Bingnear (so. Boothwyn/Chichester) has 25 stops.  LB Tom Cressman (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) has five tackles for loss and four sacks among his 23 tackles.  Justin Gibbs (so. Pottstown/Pottstown) has two interceptions and three breakups. 

Special Teams

Kicker Matt Scartozzi (sr. Malvern/Bishop Shanahan) set Kutztown's career record for field goals against Mansfield.  He booted a 30 yarder late in the first quarter for his 20th career field goal.  He passed Steve Kratz (1989-92) for sole possession of first place.  He was also 6-of-6 on PAT kicks.  Punter Ryan Nye (fr. Reading/Holy Name) was needed only to hold on Scartozzi's kicks, as KU did not attempt punt in the game.  Justin Gibbs had 61 yards on two kick returns.  

Scartozzi has connected on 3-of-5 field goals this season, with a long of 42.  He is also 10-of-12 on PATs.  Nye averages 36.5 yards on 24 punts.  

Gibbs is averaging 27.2 yards on four kick returns, while Brooks has netted 19.5 yards on two returns.  Bria averages 8.2 yards on five punt returns.

Baldwin has blocked two kicks, including a punt vs. Southern Connecticut and a field goal attempt in overtime against Clarion. 

Scouting the West Chester Golden Rams

West Chester, a 2004 NCAA semifinalist, comes to Kutztown with a 3-2 record after defeating Cheyney, 64-0.  The Rams piled up 498 yards against the Wolves.  Backup QB Bill Zwaan Jr., the son of the head coach, completed 9-of-14 passes for 215 yards and two TDs.  Dean Millard rushed for 49 yards and two scores, while Brent Steinmetz gained 44 yards and scored twice.  WR Mike Washington caught four passes for 141 yards and a TD.  

For the season, West Chester is averaging 422.8 yards per game, including 178.4 rushing and 244.4 passing.  QB Matt Burdalski did not play vs. Cheyney after suffering an injury against Delaware.  In four games, he has completed 55-of-114 passes for 902 yards, eight touchdowns and four picks.  The younger Zwaan is 14-of-22 for 280 yards and three TDs in relief.  Washington is the top receiving threat, with 22 catches for 621 yards and eight touchdowns.  Brandon Simmons has 17 grabs for 273 yards and a score.  With starting RB Osagie Osunde out for the season with an injury, Brent Steinmetz has stepped into the starting role. He has 270 yards and two touchdowns on 58 carries. 

Defensively, WCU allows 307.2 yards, including 155.6 rushing and 151.6 passing.  LB Lateef Ferguson has 41 tackles and an interception.  Safety Mike Migogno has 34 tackles, while LB Jimmy Lewis has 29 tackles, including eight for loss and five sacks.  

Alex Walsh has connected on all four of his field goal attempts, while Anthony Belasco averages 38.3 yards on 21 punts.  Steinmetz has a 5.4 yard average on nine punt returns, and Simmons has returned eight kickoffs for a 25.1 yard average.

Player of the Week

Larry Baumgardner (so. New Oxford/New Oxford) caught nine passes for 93 yards and four touchdowns vs. Mansfield. He tied the school record with the four TD receptions.
