SPRING FOOTBALL UNDERWAY AT KU, 2006 SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
Spring Game Scheduled for April 22
KUTZTOWN, PA - The Raymond Monica era of Kutztown University football is underway, as the Golden Bears' spring practices are in full gear.
Monica, who took over as Kutztown's head coach in March, has 65 players participating in spring drills in preparation of the spring game, on Saturday, April 22. The intra-squad scrimmage will begin at 4:00 PM at University Field. Admission for the scrimmage is free and open to the public.
Kutztown was 2-8 in 2005, including a 2-4 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. KU returns 38 letterwinners, including 15 starters from last year's team.

The offense will welcome back seven starters, including 2004 All-PSAC East running back Maurice Adams (jr. West Chester/Henderson) (2005 stats: 152 carries, 662 yards, 2 TD); two-time All-PSAC East tight end Jason Henley (sr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) (16 catches, 134 yards, 1 TD) and quarterback Kyle Spotts (jr. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) (128-of-270, 1,297 yards, 11 TD).
The defense will also have seven starters back in the fold for 2006, including all four starters on the front line. First-team All-PSAC East end Mike Grosso (sr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John) (56 tackles, 14 for loss, 6.0 sacks) headlines the defense. DE Leroy Azubuike (jr. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South) (63 tackles, 10 for loss, 4.0 sacks) also returns.
The 2006 Kutztown University football season is scheduled to begin on September 9 when it hosts Clarion. Kickoff is slated for 6:05 PM, marking Kutztown's first-ever home night game under the new lights at University Field.
The schedule reflects the PSAC's new 10-game mandated schedule. In years past, teams were required to play just two "crossovers" against the opposite division. Now, each PSAC East team will play four games against the PSAC West, in addition to the six games against PSAC East foes. The change is not very different for KU, which had played 10 games against PSAC teams in two of the last three years.
After the Clarion game, Kutztown travels to Shippensburg for a 1:00 PM kickoff on Sept. 16. On Sept. 23, KU hosts Slippery Rock at 6:05 PM, the first of three-straight home games. Millersville comes to Kutztown at 1:05 PM on Sept. 30 for Family Day, followed by Mansfield on Oct. 7 at 6:05 PM.
KU will travel to Bloomsburg on Oct. 14 for a 1:00 PM kickoff, before returning home to face West Chester at 1:05 PM on Oct. 21 for homecoming. Then, the Golden Bears will hit the road for the final three games of the regular season. KU heads to Cheyney on Oct. 28 for a 1:00 PM contest, Lock Haven on Nov. 4 at 1:00 PM, and East Stroudsburg on Nov. 11 at 1:05 PM.
