Kutztown vs. East Stroudsburg in 2006 Finale
The Game
The Kutztown University Football team will wrap up its 2006 season this Saturday, Nov. 11, when it travels to East Stroudsburg for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Matchup. Kickoff is set for 1:05 PM at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Kutztown is 4-5 overall, 2-3 in the PSAC East. The Golden Bears defeated Lock Haven, 30-10, this past Saturday in a PSAC crossover. The Golden Bears opened the season with a 27-10 win over Clarion, before losing at Shippensburg (42-27) and at home vs. Slippery Rock (34-10) and Millersville (45-17). KU bounced back with a win over Mansfield (51-7) before losing to Bloomsburg (41-14) and West Chester (49-47). KU then defeated Cheyney (28-6).
East Stroudsburg is 6-4 overall, 3-2 in the PSAC East. The Warriors suffered a tough 45-37 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday. ESU opened with a loss vs. Bentley (9-7), then defeated Lock Haven (45-14) and lost to Indiana (PA) (35-20). ESU then rattled off five-straight wins, vs. California (41-34), Mansfield (61-7), Millersville (30-19), Edinboro (12-0) and Cheyney (48-7). Two weeks ago, the Warriors lost to West Chester (49-28).
Electronic Coverage
The game will be broadcast on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading. Matt Santos and Steve Hahn will call the action. Listeners throughout the world can also hear the broadcast on KU's Website at kubears.com. The broadcast will begin 15 minutes before kickoff.
The Coaches
Kutztown's first-year coach, Raymond Monica (North Alabama, '90), is 4-5 in his inaugural season. Monica came to the Golden Bears from Division I-A Temple University, where he spent eight seasons as defensive coordinator. Prior to Temple, Monica coached for nine seasons at the University of North Alabama, during which time the Lions won three NCAA Division II national championships from 1993-95.
Denny Douds (Slippery Rock, '63) is in his 33rd season at ESU. He owns a 205-134-3 career record. Douds is 21-11 all-time against KU.
The Series
This game marks the 60th meeting between Kutztown and East Stroudsburg, dating back more than 100 years to 1904. East Stroudsburg holds a 41-17-1 advantage in the series, including the last five matchups. Last season, the Warriors won 42-14 in a game that was also at Eiler-Martin Stadium. KU took an early 8-0 lead when Scott Smith recovered a fumble in the end zone after a Nick Cresta interception. Ryan Nye ran a bobbled snap in for the two-point conversion. ESU led 14-8 at halftime, then outscored KU 28-6 in the second half. ESU QB Jimmy Terwilliger was 17-of-28 for 282 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for another score. Evan Prall caught eight passes for 136 yards and a TD. Kyle Spotts was 10-of-25 for 86 yards.
KU's last win over the Warriors on the road came in 2000 (17-16).
Notable
KU dedicated the Lock Haven win to assistant coach Jody Cwik, who passed away on Oct. 27 after a brief battle with cancer...the win over LHU marked KU's first back-to-back wins since winning three straight in 2004...after being held scoreless in the first quarter in the first four
games, KU has scored on its opening drive each of the past three weeks...for the seventh time in nine games, the Bears scored in the final minute of the first half as Elfren Quiles caught a TD pass from Kyle Spotts as the first half clock expired...This week, KU completes its first three-game road trip since the 1987 season.
Tracking the Golden Bears
OFFENSE: Rookie RB Cory McFadden (fr. Freemansburg/Bethlehem Catholic) led a balanced Kutztown attack vs. Lock Haven. McFadden rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. In his second-career start, McFadden scored on KU's first play from scrimmage, a 79-yard run. It was the longest run by a KU player since 1998. He added a 21-yard TD run later in the first half. FB Joe Strauss (r-fr. Lititz/Warwick) ran for 52 yards on 16 carries. WR Elfren Quiles (jr. New Britain, Ct/New Britain) had five catches for 77 yards and two TDs. Quiles upped his season-total to 10 touchdown catches, tying Kutztown's single-season record held by three others (Rich Hamilton in 2000, Mark Steinmeyer and Dom Mele in 1991). QB Kyle Spotts (jr. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) completed 11-of-20 passes for 154 yards and two TDs.
Through nine games, Kutztown's offense is averaging 364.0 yards, including 140.9 rushing and 223.1 passing. Spotts has completed 142-of-251 passes for 1,981 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has been picked off nine times. The passing yards and TDs are fifth most in a single-season at KU. Spotts also leads the team with five rushing TDs and has 70 rushing yards. Quiles leads the team with 47 catches for 717 yards and 10 touchdowns. WR Brett Harbach (sr. Sinking Spring/Wilson) has 40 grabs for 495 yards and three scores, while TE Jason Henley (sr. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) has 23 catches for 341 yards and two touchdowns. WR Larry Baumgardner (sr. New Oxford/New Oxford) has 21 receptions for 344 yards and two TDs. With RB Maurice Adams (Jr. West Chester/Henderson) sidelined, McFadden and Strauss carry the running game. McFadden has 362 yards and three scores on 72 carries. Strauss has 268 yards and three TDs on 52 rushes.
KU's offensive line consists of center Raymond Yannuzzi (sr. Wallingford/Strath Haven), guards Nick Cresta (so. Wallingford/Strath Haven) and Rick DiStefano (sr. Quarryville/Solanco) or Evan Reese (fr. Centre Hall/State College), and tackles Dustin Woodward (sr. Lancaster/Penn Manor) and Tyler Romberger (r-fr. Muir/Williams Valley) or Mike Casciano (jr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley).
DEFENSE: Kutztown's defense was solid in grounding the Bald Eagles. The Golden Bears allowed a season-low 74 rushing yards and picked off LHU's quarterback three times. DE Mike Grosso (sr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John) made a triumphant return to the site of a season-ending leg injury in 2004. He had six tackles, three for loss (-18 yards) and a sack (-12). He also notched his first career interception, which set up KU's second TD. Safety Brian Bingnear (jr. Boothwyn/Chichester) had 12 tackles and an interception. LB Dan Chominski (sr. Boothwyn/Chichester) notched nine hits. LB David Cressman (fr. Sellersville/Pennridge), starting in place of his injured brother Tom Cressman (jr. Sellersville/Pennridge), had five tackles, with one for loss. Safety Justin Gibbs (jr. Pottstown/Pottstown) also had an interception for KU.
Through nine games, Kutztown's defense is allowing 345.2 yards, including 197.6 rushing and 147.7 passing. Bingnear leads the team with 86 tackles, with one for loss, four interceptions and four breakups. Grosso has 63 tackles and leads KU with 14 tackles for loss (-44 yards) and 3.5 sacks (-26 yards). He also has recovered two fumbles. Chominski has 62 tackles, with three for loss and an interception. Gibbs has 40 hits, including two for loss. He also has two interception and four breakups. Tom Cressman has 38 tackles, three for loss and a sack. DT Scott Smith (jr. New Oxford/Delone Catholic) has 33 tackles, with five for loss. LB Sam McKellar (so. Allentown/Dieruff) has 28 tackles, including five for loss. CB Brent Howard (so. Gilbertsville/Boyertown) leads KU with six breakups. He also has two interceptions.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Ryan Nye (so. Bernville/Holy Name) averaged 39.5 yards on four punts. Kicker Steve Sandberg (jr. Quakertown/Northeast Philadelphia) hit a 20 yard field goal and was 3-for-3 on PAT kicks. KU did have one PAT fail after a bobbled snap. Harbach gained 24 yards on two kick returns.
Nye averages 39.8 yards on 33 punts. He has placed five punts inside opponent's 20 yardline. Sandberg is 3-of-7 on field goals and has hit 30-of-33 extra points. Harbach nets 12.8 yards on nine punt returns, with a 62 yarder for a TD vs. Mansfield. He also has returned three kickoffs for a 16.0 yard average.
Scouting the East Stroudsburg Warriors
East Stroudsburg fell to Bloomsburg, 45-37, this past Saturday. QB Jimmy Terwilliger completed 35-of-48 passes for 412 yards and five touchdowns to five different receivers. WR Samuel Shuman finished the day with 10 catches for 112 yards and a TD. WR Evan Prall had nine catches for 122 yards and a TD. RB Matt Brunetti rushed for 46 yards on eight carries. LB Steve VanAlstine had eight tackles with a sack and a tackle for loss. LB Jayson Frank also had eight hits. DE Greg Thoman and LB Dave Lotier each had six tackles with one for loss.
East Stroudsburg's offense averages 401.5 yards per game, including 122.2 rushing and a PSAC leading 279.3 passing. Terwilliger, the 2005 Harlon Hill Trophy winner, has completed 204-of-319 passes for 2,639 yards and 27 touchdowns. He has 7 interceptions. Prall has 69 catches for 1,073 yards and 12 TDs. Shuman has 29 receptions for 419 yards and two scores while WR Doug Ogden has 34 grabs for 376 yards and five scores. Terwilliger leads the team with 459 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 101 carries. Brunetti has 484 yards and six TDs on 99 carries.
ESU's defense allows 313.0 yards per game, including 136.8 rushing and 176.2 passing. Frank leads the team with 77 tackles, including seven TFL and in interception. Thoman has 64 hits with 12 TFL and 6.5 sacks, while DE John Vetter has 10 tackles for loss, six sacks and two fumbles recoveries for 61 yards. Scott Christy has two interceptions for 77 yards.
Eric Petters is 6-of-9 on field goals, with a long of 38. He is 35-of-44 on PAT kicks. Nick Krut averages 38.8 yards on 24 punts. Prall nets 18.7 yards on 19 punt returns. Drew Stem has a 28.8 yard average on 12 kickoff returns while Prall averages 17.6 yards also on 12 kickoff returns.

Player of the Game
Mike Grosso is this week's Kelly's Sports Player of the Game. Grosso had six tackles, including three for loss and a sack, as well as his first career interception against Lock Haven.
