Kutztown to Wrap up 2007 Season at Millersville

 

The Game

        The Kutztown University football team will conclude its 2007 season
on Saturday, Nov. 3, when it travels to Millersville University.  Kickoff is
the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest
is set for 1 p.m. at Biemesderfer Stadium.

        Kutztown is now 4-6 after a 24-23 last-second defeat against East
Stroudsburg.  KU is 1-3 in the PSAC East.  The Golden Bears have wins
against Clarion (35-13), Shippensburg (28-16), American International
(55-20) and Cheyney (40-21).  The other losses were to Southern Connecticut
State (52-30), Slippery Rock (45-9), Bloomsburg (49-32), West Chester (21-0)
and Edinboro (35-28).

        Millersville is 3-7 overall, 2-2 in the PSAC East, after last
Saturday's non-conference loss to Bentley (17-10).  Millersville has wins
over Lock Haven (19-10), East Stroudsburg (36-24) and Cheyney (16-0), while
its other losses have been to Shepherd (36-7), Slippery Rock (21-5), Indiana
(PA) (45-0), West Chester (42-14) and Shippensburg (23-14)

 

Electronic Coverage

        The game will be broadcast live on WEEU, AM 830, based out of
Reading.  Matt Santos and Steve Hahn will call the action. The pre-game show
begins at 12:45 p.m.  A live Webcast will be available at kubears.com via
redzonemedia.com.  

 

The Coaches

        Kutztown's second-year coach, Raymond Monica (North Alabama, '90),
is 8-12 in his career, after finishing 4-6 in his inaugural season.  Monica
came to the Golden Bears from Division I-A Temple University, where he spent
eight seasons as defensive coordinator.  Prior to Temple, Monica coached for
nine seasons at the University of North Alabama, during which time the Lions
won three NCAA Division II national championships from 1993-95.   He is 0-1
against Millersville.

        Joe Trainer (Gettysburg, '81) is in his third season at the helm at
Millersville.  Trainer came to MU from Villanova, where he was the defensive
coordinator.  He has a 13-19 record, including a 2-0 mark vs. Kutztown.  

 

The Series

        This game will mark the 81st meeting between Kutztown and
Millersville, dating back to 1903.  MU holds a 56-21-3 advantage in the
series, including a 45-17 victory at KU last year.  Darnell Johnson ran for
244 yards and two TDs, while Dan Csencsits passed for four TDs.  Brandon
Shelton had two interceptions.  Kyle Spotts passed for 190 yards and two
TDs.  Elfren Quiles has 32 yards and a TD on three catches.  Six of the last
eight meetings between the teams have been decided by eight or fewer points,
with the last two at MU decided by just a single point.  Millersville has
won the last three meetings, including the teams' last matchup at
Biemesderfer Stadium, 38-37 in 2005.  Kutztown's last win over Millersville
came in 2003 (17-0), with its last win in the series on the road coming in
1997 (24-21).  

 

Notable

        Kutztown leads the PSAC East in first downs (214) this season...KU
has the fewest penalty yards/game in the PSAC (45.8)....Kutztown has not
faced Millersville in a season finale since 1946...KU is 2-9 in season
finales since 1996...Kutztown will play all 11 games this season on
artificial turf, a first for the program...Elfren Quiles is the first KU
player with more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season.

 

Tracking the Golden Bears

        OFFENSE: Kutztown's offense tallied 314 yards against East
Stroudsburg, with scoring drives in each quarter.  KU, however, couldn't
capitalize on six Warrior turnovers, getting just seven points off the
miscues.  Kyle Spotts (sr. Tamaqua/Tamaqua) completed 13-of-28 passes for
144 yards and two TDs.  He added 44 yards on the ground.  Elfren Quiles (sr.
New Britain, CT/New Britain) had 69 yards on three catches, including a
50-yard TD that gave KU a fourth-quarter lead.  Jason Uhlig (r-fr. Blue
Bell/Wissahickon) had KU's other TD catch, totaling 21 yards on four
catches.  Cory McFadden (so. Freemansburg/Bethlehem Catholic) ran for 96
yards on 16 carries, including  47-yard touchdown.  

                Kutztown's offense averages 394.9 yards per game, including
147.5 rushing and 247.4 passing.  Spotts has completed 176-of-346 passes for
2,466 yards.  The yards are the fourth most in a season at KU.  Spotts has
20 TD passes and 13 interceptions.  Quiles leads all NCAA Division II
players in receiving yards per game (123.8).  He has 58 catches for 1,114
yards and eight TDs.  Quiles has 1,930 yards in two seasons at KU, 188 yards
short of the school's career record.  His 20 TD catches are tied for second,
three short of the career mark.  TE Dan Onorato (jr. Malvern/Malvern Prep)
is the team's second leading receiver, with 242 yards and two TDs on 25
catches.  Alex Zukus (r-fr. Tuscarora/Tamaqua) has 19 catches for 229 yards
and two scores.  RB Dontay Wilson  (jr. Stamford, CT/Stamford), who sat out
vs. ESU due to injury, has rushed for 485 yards and four touchdowns on 88
carries.  McFadden has 316 yards and two scores on 75 carries.  

        KU's offensive line consists of center Evan Reese (so. Centre
Hall/State College), guards Shane Kadlac (r-fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River
East) and Darrell Martin (jr. Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg), and tackles Mike
Casciano (sr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) or Steve Frymoyer (r-fr. West
Lawn/Wilson) and Tyler Romberger (so. Muir/Williams Valley).  

        DEFENSE: KU's defense put up a valiant effort against East
Stroudsburg.  The Golden Bears notched six takeaways, including five fumble
recoveries.  FS Brian Bingnear (sr. Boothwyn/Chichester) led the defense
with a career-high 18 tackles.  LB David Cressman (so.
Sellersville/Pennridge) had 10 tackles and forced and recovered a fumble.
Safety Mike Gardier (so. Dunmore/Dunmore) had 10 hits with an interception.
SS Cory Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) had seven tackles.  CB Justin
Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown) had two breakups and six tackles.  LB Keith
Massey (r-fr. Allentown/William Allen), DT Nick Cresta (jr.
Wallingford/Strath Haven) and DT Christopher Medina (fr. Kennett
Square/Kennett) had fumble recoveries.  DE Greg Rotkowski (fr.
Macungie/Emmaus) had a sack and forced a fumble.

        Through 10 games, Kutztown's defense allows an average of 402.3
yards per game, including 165 rushing and 237.3 passing.  The Golden Bears
lead the PSAC in takeaways with 28 (17 fumbles, 11 interceptions).  Bingnear
leads the team and the PSAC with 96 tackles, including three for loss. He
has three interceptions and five breakups.  LB Tom Cressman (sr.
Sellersville/Pennrdige) has 87 tackles, with eight for loss and two sacks.
He has two interceptions and has recovered three fumbles.  Gardier has 67
tackles, with four for loss and two sacks.  He has six breakups.  Gibbs has
65 hits, with two interceptions and eight pass breakups.  LB Sean Alboucq
(so. Lehighton/Lehighton) has 36 tackles.  DE Kevin Branco (jr.
Hellertown/Saucon Valley) has six sacks and 10 tackles for loss.

                SPECIAL TEAMS: Ryan Nye (jr. Bernville/Holy Name) averaged
41.6 yards on seven punts and was 1-for-1 on field goals, hitting from 34
yards.  The Golden Bears, though, had a PAT kick and punt blocked, both in
the fourth quarter.  

        On the season, Nye averages 41.8 yards on 43 punts.  He is 3-for-4
on field goals, 11-of-13 on PATs and also handles kickoffs.  Wilson averages
25.8 yards on 25 kick returns.  His 646 total yards are a KU single-season
record.  Spotts is KU's holder, while Pat Healey (r-fr. Washington Twp.,
NJ/Washington Twp.) serves as the long snapper.

                

Scouting the Millersville Marauders

        Millersville is 3-7 on the season, coming off a 17-10 loss to
non-conference foe Bentley.  Bentley scored a touchdown with 30 seconds to
play to break the deadlock. QB Jamal Smith passed for 118 yards and ran for
a TD and 37 yards.  Brad Lantz rushed for 70 yards on 22 carries.  Randell
Eggleton had five catches for 82 yards.  SS Marcus Banks had six tackles and
two breakups.  DE Kevin Kershner had six tackles, including two for loss.
CB Brandon Shelton had an interception.

        On the season, Millersville averages 246.7 yards per game, including
159.1 rushing and 87.6 passing.  Smith has completed 59-of-152 passes for
788 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions.  The mobile QB has 527
rushing yards and five TDs on 155 carries.  Lantz leads the ground attack
with 750 yards and two scores on 201 rushes.  Eggleton has 23 catches for
340 yards and two TDs.  

        The Marauder defense averages 372.4 yards allowed, including 180
rushing and 192.4 passing.  Shelton leads the PSAC with six interceptions,
along with five breakups.  He also has 57 tackles.  Banks has 70 tackles,
while LB Jason Krol has 60 hits with five for loss.  LB Matt Buck has two
sacks and four tackles for loss among his 44 hits.  DE Jarrod Linn and LB
Andrew Pugh have 2.5 sacks apiece.

        Millersville leads the PSAC in punt returns, averaging 16.9 yards
per attempt.  Jimmie Cotton leads the way, netting 15.4 yards on 12 returns.
He also averages 19.7 yards on 18 kickoff returns.  John Banzhof is 6-for-10
on field goals, with a long of 42.  Derek Leslie averages 39.8 yards on 68
punts.

Player of the Game

        Brian Bingnear is this week's Kelly's Sports, Ltd., Player of the
Game.  Bingnear had a career-high 18 tackles against East Stroudsburg.
