KU Finishes 2007 Season 5-6 overall, 2-3 in the PSAC East
The Season
The Kutztown University football team finished the 2007 season 5-6
overall, 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern
Division. KU ended in a three-way tie for third place in the division with
East Stroudsburg and Millersville. West Chester was first, followed by
Bloomsburg in second.
Kutztown began the season with a 52-30 loss at Southern Connecticut,
before winning at Clarion (35-13) and at home against Shippensburg (28-16).
A loss at Slippery Rock (45-9) was followed with a 55-20 win over American
International. KU fell to Bloomsburg (49-32) and at West Chester (21-0),
before defeating Cheyney 40-21. Edinboro (35-28) and East Stroudsburg
(24-23) defeated the Golden Bears, but KU bounced back with a 26-23
triple-overtime win at Millersville to end the season.
The Seniors
Kutztown bid farewell to nine seniors this season. They are: RB
Travis Barron (Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan), a four-year letterwinner with
16 career carries for 81 yards and two TDs; FS Brian Bingnear
(Boothwyn/Chichester), a three-year starter with 276 tackles, seven tackles
for loss, eight interceptions and 12 pass breakups in his career; OL Mike
Casciano (Birdsboro/Twin Valley), a two-year letterwinner who started 11
games in his two seasons at KU; LB Tom Cressman (Sellersville/Pennridge), a
three-year starter with 193 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, six
forced fumbles, and five fumble recoveries in his career; CB Justin Gibbs
(Pottstown/Pottstown), a four-year starter with 187 tackles, nine tackles
for loss, 27 pass breakups and eight interceptions in his career; SS Cory
Porrino (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain), a two-year starter and three-year
letterwinner with 96 tackles, five tackles for loss, three interceptions and
eight breakups in his career; WR Elfren Quiles (New Britain, CT/New
Britain), who finished among KU's career leaders in receiving yards (4th,
2,003) and touchdowns (tie-second, 20) in his two seasons at KU; in four
years (including two at Merrimack), Quiles had 4,136 receiving yards (11th
all-time in Div. II), 252 receptions (13th in Div. II) and 43 TD catches
(tie-ninth in Div. II); DE Scott Smith (New Oxford/Delone Catholic), who had
132 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks as a three-year starter and
four-year letterwinner; and QB Kyle Spotts (Tamaqua/Tamaqua), a three-year
starter who finishes among KU's career leaders in attempts (third, 921),
completions (third, 475), passing yards (third, 6,065) and passing TDs
(second, 51).
The Coach
Kutztown's second-year coach, Raymond Monica (North Alabama, '90),
is 9-12 in his career, after finishing 4-6 in his inaugural season and 5-6
this year. Monica is 4-7 in PSAC East games. His teams snapped losing
streaks vs. Shippensburg (eight games), and Millersville (three games) this
season. Monica came to the Golden Bears from Division I-A Temple
University, where he spent eight seasons as defensive coordinator. Prior to
Temple, Monica coached for nine seasons at the University of North Alabama,
during which time the Lions won three NCAA Division II national
championships from 1993-95.
Notable
KU WR Elfren Quiles is one of six regional finalists for the Harlon
Hill Trophy, which is given to the NCAA Division II College Football Player
of the Year...Quiles and QB Kyle Spotts will both participate in the East
Coast Bowl, an all-star game that features Division I-FCS, II, III and NAIA
players from the Mid-Atlantic Region, on Nov. 24 in Petersburg, Va...the duo
also is nominated for the Cactus Bowl, a Division II all-star game in
Kingsville, Texas...Kutztown led the PSAC East in first downs (235) this
season...KU has the fewest penalty yards/game in the PSAC (44.5).the Golden
Bears won its season finale for just the third time since 1996...Kutztown
played all 11 games this season on artificial turf, a first for the program.
Millersville Game Recap: KU 26, MU 23 (3 OT)
Kutztown closed its 2007 season in thrilling fashion, outlasting
Millersville 26-23 in triple overtime. The win was KU's first after five
previous OT losses, and had the second-most OTs in KU history, one fewer
than a four-OT loss to Clarion in 2005. QB Kyle Spotts (sr.
Tamaqua/Tamaqua) scored his third rushing TD in the third overtime to secure
the victory. He had TD runs of 1, 1 and 8 yards, and finished with 147
yards passing and 42 yards rushing. RB Dontay Wilson (jr. Stamford,
CT/Stamford) scored KU's other TD on a 5-yard run, finishing with 70 yards
on 19 carries. WR Elfren Quiles (sr. New Britain, CT/New Britain) had six
catches for 73 yards.
FS Brian Bingnear (sr. Boothwyn/Chichester) notched a career- and
PSAC season-high 22 tackles, including 13 solos with two tackles for loss
and an interception. Bingnear's performance led a strong defensive effort,
particularly in the second half. KU allowed 316 yards in the game, but just
79 yards in the second half and overtimes. LB Tom Cressman (sr.
Sellersville/Pennridge) had 10 hits, with two tackles for loss and a forced
fumble. LB David Cressman (so. Sellersville/Pennridge) had seven stops and
DE Greg Rotkowski (fr. Macungie/Emmaus) had six tackles, with two for loss
and a sack. CB Justin Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown) had an interception
and Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill) had a sack.
KU's special teams were led by punter Ryan Nye (jr.
Bernville/Tulpehocken), who averaged 40.2 yards on six punts. Quiles had 45
yards on four punt returns. The special teams were hampered by a pair of
blocked field goals and a blocked PAT kick.
2007 Season Review
OFFENSE: Kutztown's offense was solid in 2007. The Golden Bears
averaged 385.9 yards of total offense, including 147.6 rushing and 238.3
passing - all three totals ranking in the top eight in the league. Spotts
had one of the best seasons ever by a Golden Bear QB. He completed
191-of-380 passes for 2,613 yards and 20 TDs. He threw 14 interceptions.
Spotts' completions (fifth), attempts (second) and passing yards (third),
TDs (tie-fourth) all rank among KU's single-season leaders. His 463 passing
yards and 493 yards of total offense against Bloomsburg set single-game
school records. Spotts also netted 180 rushing yards and six rushing TDs.
Quiles led all Division II players in receiving yards per game (118.7),
setting a KU single-season record with 1,187 yards. He had eight TD catches
among his 64 receptions. TE Dan Onorato (jr. Malvern/Malvern Prep) was the
second-leading receiver, with 26 catches for 263 yards and two scores. WR
Will Brown (fr. Trenton, NJ/Ewing) had a solid rookie season, with 21
receptions for 225 yards and six TDs before an injury sidelined him for the
final four games. WR Alex Zukus (r-fr. Tuscarora/Tamaqua) had 19 catches
for 229 yards and two TDs, while Jason Uhlig (r-fr. Blue Bell/Wissahickon)
had 19 grabs for 204 yards and a score.
Wilson led the team in rushing, gaining 555 yards on 107 carries
(5.2 yards/carry). He scored five TDs. Cory McFadden (so.
Freemansburg/Bethlehem/Catholic) had 337 yards and two scores on 86 carries.
Kutztown's offensive line was led by center Evan Reese (so. Center
Hall/State College), guard Darrell Martin (Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) and
tackle Tyler Romberger (so. Muir/Williams Valley) - each of whom started all
11 games. Guard Shane Kadlac (r-fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) started
10 of 11 games. Tackle Mike Casciano (sr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley) started
eight games, but missed the final three due to injury. Steve Frymoyer
(r-fr. West Lawn/Wilson) started three games in place of Casciano.
DEFENSE: The Golden Bear defense improved as the season progressed.
After allowing an average of 48.7 points in losses to Southern Connecticut,
Slippery Rock and Bloomsburg, KU's defense allowed an average 26.7 points in
its last three losses to West Chester, Edinboro and East Stroudsburg. In
KU's five wins, the Golden Bears did not allow more than 23 points.
Kutztown allowed an average of 394.5 yards per game, including 173.1 rushing
and 221.4 passing.
The defenders were led by Bingnear, who led all players in the PSAC
with 118 tackles. He had 71 solo tackles and added five tackles for loss,
four interceptions and five pass breakups. Tom Cressman notched 96 tackles,
with 10 for loss and two sacks. He picked off two passes, recovered three
fumbles and caused two. Safety Mike Gardier (so. Dunmore/Dunmore) had 74
tackles, with four for loss and two sacks. He had an interception and six
breakups. Gibbs had 69 tackles with two for loss, along with three
interceptions and nine breakups. Safety Cory Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue
Mountain) had 56 hits with four for loss, along with two picks and three
breakups. David Cressman had 39 tackles and CB Cameron Parchment (so.
Tannersville/Pocono Mountain East) had 39 stops with four breakups. LB Sean
Alboucq (so. Lehighton/Lehighton) notched 37 hits, while DT Nick Cresta (jr.
Wallingford/Strath Haven) had 31 tackles with two for loss and three pass
breakups. DE Kevin Branco (jr. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) led the team with
six sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Rotkowski had 3.5 sacks and seven
tackles for loss. Smith had six tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and an
interception. DT Chris Medina (so. Kennett Square/Kennett) had a pair of
sacks.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Kutztown's special teams ranked fourth in the
PSAC in kickoff returns (21.8 yards/return), led by Wilson, who netted 25.8
yards on 25 kickoff returns. His 646 yards are a single-season KU record.
He had a 94-yard return for a TD. The Bears had the league's top punter in
Nye, who averaged 41.6 yards on 49 punts. Nye also was 3-for-5 on field
goals, with a long of 34, was 11-of-14 on PAT kicks, handled kickoffs and
had 13 special teams tackles. Matt Dineen (r-fr. Wilmington, De/Concord)
hit 5-of-10 field goals, including a school-record tying three against
Slippery Rock, and was 23-of-25 on PATs. Quiles averaged 8.2 yards on nine
punt returns. Spotts was KU's holder, while Pat Healey (r-fr. Washington
Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) served as the long snapper.

Co-Players of the Game
Kyle Spotts and Brian Bingnear are this week's Kelly's Sports, Ltd.,
Co-Players of the Game. Spotts ran for three TDs, including the game-winner
in the third OT on an 8-yard run. Bingnear had a career-high 22 tackles and
an interception.
