GOLDEN BEARS PLACE 11 ON ALL-PSAC EAST FOOTBALL TEAM
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Eleven members of the Kutztown University football team were
honored by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Wednesday, with
wideout Elfren Quiles (sr. New Britain, Conn./New Britain) and defensive
back Brian Bingnear (sr. Boothwyn/Chichester) leading the way.
The two seniors closed out their careers at KU with first team
All-PSAC East honors. Nine Golden Bears were named to the second team,
including linebacker Tom Cressman (sr. Sellersville/Pennridge), defensive
backs Mike Gardier (so. Dunmore/Dunmore) and Justin Gibbs (sr.
Pottstown/Pottstown), defensive lineman Scott Smith (sr. New Oxford/Delone
Catholic), running back Dontay Wilson (jr. Stamford, Conn./Stamford),
offensive linemen Darrell Martin (jr. Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg) and Mike
Casciano (sr. Birdsboro/Twin Valley), tight end Dan Onorato (jr.
Malvern/Malvern Prep) and punter Ryan Nye (jr. Bernville/Holy Name).
Quiles finished the regular season ranked second in NCAA
Division II and first in the PSAC in receiving yards per game (118.7). He
scored eight touchdowns and had a single-season record 1,187 yards,
including a school-record 308 against Bloomsburg. Quiles, who earned second
team honors last season, also had 211 against Southern Connecticut State in
the season opener. He finished the year with 64 receptions, fourth most in
a season in program history. Earlier this week, Quiles was named a regional
finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given to the Division II Player of the
Year.
Bingnear led the PSAC with a total of 118 tackles, 10.7 per
game. He had a season-high 22 tackles in the Golden Bears' 26-23 triple
overtime win at Millersville on Nov. 11. He notched five tackles for loss,
four interceptions and five pass breakups. This is Bingnear's
second-straight first-team selection.
Cressman finished sixth in the PSAC with 97 tackles and two
sacks. He added 10 tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and two forced
fumbles.
Gardier had 74 tackles, including four for loss and two sacks.
He added an interception and six pass breakups. This is the sophomore's
second All-PSAC East second team pick, after earning the same honor at
Mansfield last year
Gibbs notched 69 tackles, with two for loss. He grabbed three
interceptions and broke up nine passes to ran second in the league in passes
defended.
Smith had 2.5 sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery to go
with his 31 tackles. He had six tackles for loss and picked off a pass.
Nye, who led the PSAC in punting with a 41.6 average, punted 49
times, placing eight inside opponents' 20-yard line. He was a second-team
All-PSAC East selection last year.
Wilson, who was the Golden Bears' leading rusher with 555 yards
and a 5.2 yards per carry average, was second on the team with five rushing
touchdowns and second in all-purpose yards with 1,214.
Offensive linemen Casciano and Martin paved the way for a
running game that averaged 147.6 yards per game and an offense that ranked
sixth in the league in total yards (385.9)
