KUTZTOWN, PA - Kutztown lost to Bloomsburg, 49-32, despite a record-breaking
offensive performance by the Golden Bears Saturday night in a wild PSAC East
football game at University Field.
Kutztown set several single game offensive records, including
total offense (625 yards), receiving yards by Elfren Quiles (308) and
passing yards by Kyle Spotts (463). Quiles' 308 yards are the second most in
a game in PSAC history. Quiles has already set Kutztown's season record for
receiving yards at 951, while Spotts and Quiles set the career record for
QB-WR touchdown connections with 19.
Quiles caught two touchdowns, Spotts passed for three and ran
for one. Kutztown added a safety when Leroy Azubuike had a sack in the end
zone. Matt Dineen also hit a 25-yard field goal.
Jamar Brittingham ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns to lead
Bloomsburg. Brittingham scored on runs of 87, 5 and 36 yards. The 87-yarder
was a Huskie record. QB Dan Latorre was 11-of-17 for 182 yards and two TDs,
running for another. Bloomsburg added a TD on a 51-yard blocked field goal
return by Jesse Cooper.
Bloomsburg seemed in control after the first quarter, leading
21-3 after TD runs by Latorre and Brittingham, along with a TD pass from
Latorre to Kyle Ream. Brittingham's second score with 4:22 left in the
first half game BU a 28-3 lead.
Kutztown, however, scored on its next play, a 76-yard pass from
Spotts to Quiles. A penalty on the ensuing kick return backed BU up to its
own seven yardline. On the next play, Latorre was whistled for intentional
grounding in the end zone, after Azubuike applied the pressure for the
safety.
After the free kick, the Golden bears went 47 yards on eight
plays, capped by Spotts 4-yard pass to Will Brown with 38 seconds left in
the half, KU trailed 28-19. Chris McGee forced afumble on the ensuing
kickoff and KU recovered. However, a 29-yard field goal by Dineen missed as
the score stayed 28-19 at the half.
Kutztown opened the second half with an 11-play, 63-yard drive
to the Bloomsburg nine. Dineen's 26-yard field goal attempt was blocked by
Jesse Cooper, who after a scramble to recover the loose pigskin, scooped it
up near midfield and returned it 51 yards for a score.
A 48-yard kickoff return by Dontay Wilson set up a short 38-yard
drive to Bloomsburg's two, but KU turned the ball over on downs. After a BU
punt, KU again moved into the red zone, with a drive to the BU 17, but
Dineen's 34 yard field goal missed wide left.
Bloomsburg chewed 3:25 on its next drive, but again punted.
Spotts and Quiles connected three times for 73 yards on the next drive,
including a 25-yard hookup for a TD to make it 35-25 with 9:38 left in the
game. Spotts two-point conversion pass failed.
The Huskies went back to work on the clock, grinding 5:25 off
with a 13-play drive. Latorre passed for Brahin Bilal for a six-yard score
to cap it, giving BU a 42-25 edge.
Kutztown was not finished, spots and Quiles connected on a
55-yard pass to the BU 3 yardline. Spotts went in two plays later to make
it 42-32 with 3:37 left. BU recovered the onside kick, and Brittingham
stretched the lead to 49-32 with a 36-yard run on the next play.
KU's final comeback attempt stalled at midfield on a fumble,
recovered by BU's Alfonso Nathan.
Tom Cressman led KU's defense with 12 tackles. Sean Alboucq had
eight. Scott Smith had two tackles for loss, while Azubuike and Mike
Gardier each had a sack.
Jeremy Lightner had eight tackles, while Rob Biernat had seven
tackles and forced a fumble. Earl McNeil and Todd Givler each had a sack.
Kutztown (3-3, 0-1 PSAC East) travels to West Chester next
Saturday at 6:00 PM. Bloomsburg is off next week before hosting
Millersville on Oct. 20 at 1:30 PM.
