Golden Bears to Face Clarion in PSAC Crossover

The Game

The Kutztown University football team will be on the road this
Saturday, Sept. 8, for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
inter-division crossover against Clarion University. Kickoff is set for
6:00 PM at Clarion's Memorial Stadium.

Last week, Kutztown (0-1) opened its season with a 52-30 setback
against Southern Connecticut State. Kutztown was 4-6 overall, 2-4 in the
PSAC East in 2006. Clarion (0-1) also took a loss to start its 2007 season,
falling to Tiffin by the score of 38-10 on Saturday. The Golden Eagles were
1-10 overall, 0-6 in the PSAC West last year.

Electronic Coverage

The game will be broadcast on WEEU, AM 830, based out of Reading. The game
will be tape delayed, beginning upon the completion of the Philadelphia
Phillies/Florida Marlins game that starts at 4:00 PM. Matt Santos and Steve
Hahn will call the action. Listeners throughout the world can hear the
broadcast on KU's Web site at kubears.com. Broadcast time for the Webcast is
to be determined.

The Coaches

Both teams will be under the direction of second-year head coaches.

Kutztown's second-year coach, Raymond Monica (North Alabama, '90), is 4-7 in
his career, after finishing 4-6 in his inaugural season. Monica came to the
Golden Bears from Division I-A Temple University, where he spent eight
seasons as defensive coordinator. Prior to Temple, Monica coached for nine
seasons at the University of North Alabama, during which time the Lions won
three NCAA Division II national championships from 1993-95. He is 1-0
against Clarion.

Jay Foster (Plymouth State '85) is 1-11 in his second season at Clarion. He
took over the Golden Eagles' program after 18 years at Slippery Rock,
including the final 17 as defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator
and defensive backs coach. He is 0-1 against Kutztown.

The Series

This game will mark the 19th meeting between Kutztown and Clarion, dating
back to 1941. The Eagles lead the series 13-5. Kutztown, however, has won
three of the last four meetings, including last year's 27-10 season opener
at University Field. Kyle Spotts ran and passed for a TD, while Maurice
Adams returned the second-half opening kickoff for a TD. Elfren Quiles made
his KU debut with seven catches for 120 yards and a TD. Safety Brian
Bingnear had two picks. For Clarion, Eddie Emmanuel had 88 yards on 16
carries. Pierre Odom had six catches for 71 yards.

In the team's last meeting at Memorial Stadium, Clarion won a 29-23
quadruple-overtime barnburner, a PSAC record for overtimes in a game.
Clarion QB Brandon Dando's 3-yard run in the fourth overtime proved to be
the difference, as KU failed to score on its final possession. The third
overtime featured a pair of blocked field goals, while KU also had a 50-yard
fumble return by Justin Gibbs fall short of the end zone in the first OT.
Spotts was 21-of-41 for 152 yards, with a TD and interception.

KU's last win at Clarion came in 2003, a 20-19 nail biter. Kutztown was
out-gained 449-216, but recovered six Golden Eagle fumbles. Kutztown lost
to Clarion in the 1980 PSAC "State Game" following KU's only East Division
title in school history.
