KUTZTOWN,PA - Dontay Wilson scored on a 94 yard kickoff return and a
one-yard run to lead Kutztown to a come-from-behind win over Shippensburg,
28-16, at University Field Saturday afternoon.
Wilson finished with 55 yards on 16 carries, and returned
the opening kickoff of the second half 94 yards for a score and pulled the
Golden Bears to within 16-14.
On KU's next possession, Kyle Spotts connected with Elfren
Quiles for a school-record 87-yard touchdown pass and a 21-16 KU lead.
Wilson gave KU a 28-16 lead 4:44 left in the third on a one-yard run to cap
a six-play, 49-yard drive.
The Golden Bear defense bent, but did not break after that.
Shippensburg ran their final 34 offensive plays over four possessions in
Kutztown territory, but did not score. The first possession was stopped on
a 4th and goal inside the one when Craig Croman stuffed QB Gabe Maiocco's
sneak attempt. Cory Porrino intercepted Maiocco in the end zone on the next
drive, then broke up a fourth-down pass inside the 10 on the next Raider
attempt. Ship's last gasp fell inches short of the end zone when Maiocco
hit Mike Harris, who was ruled down inside the one yardline with six seconds
to play.
Shippensburg got a safety with 6:03 left in the first
quarter when Jaron Nalewak tackled Wilson in the end zone. Howard Chavous'
12-yard reception from Maiocco with 11:55 left in the second gave The
Raiders a 9-0 lead.
Kutztown got on the board with 7:21 left in the half when
Spotts hit Will Brown for a five-yard pass. Maiocco scored with a 1-yard
sneak with 44 ticks left in the first half.
Spotts was 10-of-18 for 165 yards and two scores. Quiles
caught four passes for 114 yards. Tom Cressman led the team with 15
tackles, while Brian Bingnear added 13 and Sam McKellar notched 10. Porrino
had eight tackles, a tackle for loss and an interception and pass breakup.
Justin Gibbs broke up four passes and had an interception. Leroy Azubuike
had 1.5 sacks among seven hits.
Maiocco was 22-of-43 for 236 yards. Chavous had seven
catches for 96 yards. Aaron Dykes rushed for 42 yards on nine carries.
Nalewak had 11 tackles, three for loss and a half sack. Jonathan Aldridge
added 10 stops.
Kutztown travels to Slippery Rock for a 7:00 PM game next
Saturday. Shippensburg hosts West Chester at 3:00 PM.
