KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Dontay Wilson scored two touchdowns to lead the Maroon team to a 27-7 win over the Gold team in Kutztown University's annual intra-squad spring game at University Field Saturday.
Wilson ran for 53 yards on 20 carries, scoring on touchdowns of 2 and 1 yards in the fourth quarter. Cory McFadden had 60 yards on seven rushes, including a 38-yard TD in the first quarter. Junior Shane Martin looked solid in his debut as KU's first-string quarterback, completing 11-of-20 passes for 208 yards and running for 51 yards on eight carries. Mike Dietrich led all players with 89 yards on four catches. Jason Uhlig had three grabs for 56 yards.
For the Gold team, Kendell Coleman ran for 33 yards on seven carries, scoring the team's only TD in the third quarter. Jim Domzalski had two catches for 73 yards. Maurice Adams, returning to action for the first time since a season-ending injury in 2006, had 32 yards on nine carries.
The game was played with two full teams and utilized a running clock. The only other difference in rules from a regular-season game was on kickoffs and punts, where there were no returns. After all kicks, the ball was spotted at the point where the returner fielded them.
The Maroon team made a winner of honorary head coach Bob Watrous, KU's assistant vice president of student services and campus life, while Hall of Famer and former KU head coach Al Leonzi coached the gold team.
The Maroon team took the lead in the second quarter, when McFadden found a seam and went in from 38 yards out. Two Matt Dineen field goals, from 21 and 29 yards, later in the quarter made it 13-0 at halftime.
The Gold team cut the lead to 13-7 midway through the third when Coleman capped a seven-play, 25-yard drive with his 3-yard scoring run.
Maroon then marched 64 yards on 10 plays, with Wilson scoring his first TD from 2 yards out for a 20-7 lead with 12:25 to play. After a Gold punt, Maroon again marched down the field, covering 70 yards on 11 plays, with Wilson punching it in from 1 yard out to cap the scoring with 3:24 left.
Defensively, the Maroon team was led by Joel Irwin, who had five tackles and an interception. Keith Massey had five stops, three of which were for loss. Nick Cresta had 1.5 sacks, while Nick Hosford also had a sack.
For the Gold team, the defense was led by David Cressman, who notched 10 tackles. Sean Alboucq, Kevin Bolinsky and Sam McKellar all had six tackles each. Brandon Emerich had an interception.
At halftime, the coaching staff announced the most improved players. The offensive most improved player was Evan Reese. The defensive award when to Khalief Evans.
