SIX GOLDEN BEARS HONORED BY TRACK COACHES

 

KUTZTOWN, PA - Six Kutztown University athletes have been named to the 2006 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's All-Academic Team by the USTFCCCA.

 

            The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) honors both individuals and teams for their academic and athletic accomplishments during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.  To qualify as an individual, an athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher and must have met the NCAA Division II national qualifying standard in his/her event.

            

            Desiree Bower (jr. Bethel/Tulpehocken), is an elementary education major with a 3.04 GPA.  She qualified as an All-academic with her 3000-meter steeplechase time of 11:24.36 during the outdoor season.  Bower was an Indoor PSAC Champion as a member of the 4x800 relay team.

 

            Tony Hegedus (jr. Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh) was a member of the PSAC Indoor Championship 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams.  During the outdoor season, Hegedus was a PSAC champion in the 400 hurdles and as a member of the 4x400 relay team.  The computer science major with a 3.76 GPA was a NCAA qualifier in the indoor 400 (49.43) and the outdoor 400 hurdles (52.40) while earning ESPN the Magazine All-District second team honors. 

 

            Laura Kline (jr. Reading/Reading) qualified during the outdoor season in the 400 hurdles with a school record time of 1:01.74.  The special education major with a 4.0 GPA was the PSAC Champion in the 400 during the indoor season along with her All-PSAC top three finish in the 4x400 relay.  During the outdoor season, Kline was an All-PSAC finisher in the 400 hurdles, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.  She earned honors as a member of the PSAC Winter and Spring Top 10, ESPN the Magazine All-District first-team and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first-team.  

 

            Renee Marchand (jr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) was a two-time PSAC Champion this season.  During the indoor season, she won the pentathlon and during the outdoor season she earned the heptathlon crown.  Those victories go along with her All-PSAC finishes in the indoor high jump and 4x400 relay along with an outdoor top 3 finish in the 4x400 relay.   An elementary education major with a 3.10 GPA, she provisionally qualified for NCAAs with her heptathlon point total of 4,485.

 

            Alison Mauer (sr. Lewisberry/N. York) had a cumulative GPA of 3.38 in art education.  During the Indoor Track season she was the PSAC Champ in the 20-lb. weight throw.  In the Outdoor season, Mauer was named PSAC Most Valuable Field Athlete, was PSAC Champ in the hammer throw, was an All-PSAC finisher (finished in top 3 of event) in the discus, qualified for the NCAA Championship and earned USTFCCCA East Region Field Athlete of the Year and All-America honors.  She qualified for nationals with her indoor 20 lb. weight throw of 54-11 1/2 and her outdoor hammer throw of 180-1.

 

            Christine Procopio (sr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) qualified during the indoor season in the 20 lb. weight (53-3 3/4) and the outdoor season in the hammer throw (171-1).  Procopio was an All-PSAC finisher in the indoor 20 lb. weight throw and the outdoor hammer throw.  She is currently a graduate student carrying a 4.0 GPA in secondary education/mathematics.
