SANTOS TO ASSIST WITH OVERALL UNIVERSITY RELATIONS EFFORT;
SEARCH FOR SUCCESSOR UNDERWAY
Matt Santos, Kutztown University's director of athletic advancement since 1998, has been named KU's assistant director of university relations, effective immediately.
In his new role, Santos will handle media relations for the entire university. He will continue to supervise KU's sports information operation and football broadcasting contract. He will also assist with the university's electronic media and marketing endeavors.
Santos came to Kutztown in 1992 as sports information director/assistant director of public relations. After revamping the sports information effort, his duties were expanded in 1998 to include all external relations efforts for athletics. In his eight years in athletic advancement, he helped raise over $1.36 million through annual giving, endowments, corporate partnerships and special events. Santos helped double the annual athletic fundraising total, while increasing special event attendance by as much as 300%. Fourteen new endowed athletic scholarships were established during his tenure. In addition, he managed the effort to develop the new Golden Bear athletic logos and mascot program.
In the broadcasting area, Santos secured KU's first-ever commercial radio contract for football, when a deal was struck with WEEU radio of Reading in 2003. In 1998, Santos oversaw the creation of the Golden Bear Network, allowing KU to Webcast select sporting events in-house. He also spearheaded much of the effort to revive the campus student radio station, KUR. Santos has covered 139 Golden Bear football games in person.
"I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to broaden my perspective of higher education at KU," Santos said. "I'm also glad that I will be able to continue to assist with the promotion of KU athletics through my involvement with broadcasting."
Prior to KU, Santos was the sports information director at NCAA Division I Delaware State University for three years (1989-92). He also served as sports information director/residence counselor at Lincoln (PA) University for the 1988-89 academic year.
Santos earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications/public relations from Rowan University in 1988. He procured his Master of Science degree from KU in electronic media in 2003.
A search for Santos' successor is currently underway.
