KU PLACES 39TH IN US SPORTS ACADEMY DIRECTORS' CUP

 

KUTZTOWN, PA - Kutztown University's athletic program finished 39th in the race for the 2005-06 NCAA Division II US Sports Academy Director's Cup.

            Kutztown compiled 305.5 points for its 39th place finish.  The Directors Cup is awarded annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the United States Sports Academy and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country at each of the NCAA Division I, II and III levels as well as NAIA.

            Two-time defending champion Grand Valley (MI) State won its third-consecutive Division II Directors' Cup.   The Lakers accumulated 974.75 points, 382.25 points ahead of the runner-up, Abilene Christian (TX) University.  There are over 250 institutions which compete at the NCAA Division II level.

            Points for the Directors' Cup standings are awarded based upon finish in NCAA Championship competition.  The points are based on bracket size for team sports, or the number of teams that place in individual sports, for each championship. 

            KU was the second-highest Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) school in the Director's Cup standings, behind only Edinboro, which placed 30th with 325 points.   Kutztown won the 2005-06 Dixon Trophy, awarded to the top PSAC school with the league's best all-around performance in conference play.

            Seven Kutztown programs contributed to the school's finish.  Those sports that registered points, along with their NCAA Division II national finish and points scored, are as follows:  men's tennis (tie-ninth, 64 points), women's tennis (tie-ninth, 64), baseball (tie-ninth, 64), women's cross country (15th, 45), wrestling (27th, 10), softball (tie-49th, 25), and women's outdoor track & field (tie-38th, 33.5). 

            The Golden Bears placed 57th last year after placing 30th in 2003-04.  KU was 53rd in 2002-03 and 29th in 2001-02.  The Golden Bears had their best finish in 1995-96, when they placed 25th.
