KRANZ, MILLS SWEEP PSAC HONORS; GOLDEN BEARS RANKED #2 IN NATION
KUTZTOWN, PA - Kutztown University's baseball team, ranked #2 in the nation, swept the weekly Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division awards on Monday.
The Golden Bears, who moved up to #2 in this week's American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll, are the first team from the North Atlantic Region to be ranked #2 since Mansfield was the top pick in the 1995 pre-season and early-season polls.
Kutztown trails only Cal. State-Los Angeles in the poll (39-4-1). Tampa (36-9) is third.
Kutztown is 38-3 overall, 15-1 in the PSAC East. The Golden Bears, winners of nine straight and 22 of their last 23, have already clinched the PSAC East regular-season title with four games to play Friday-Saturday against Mansfield.
Nate Kranz (so. Silver Spring/Cumberland Valley) was named PSAC East Player of the Week, while Jason Mills (sr. Hatfield/North Penn) was named the PSAC East Pitcher of the Week.
Kranz hit .500 (11-for-22) as Kutztown went 8-0 for the week. Most notably, he was the leader on offense in a four-game sweep of Bloomsburg as he hit .545 (6-11) with three runs and two RBI. In a come-from-behind win on Friday, he drove in and scored a run, and went 4-for-4 in a 5-3 win on Saturday. For the week he totaled six runs, four doubles, a triple and two steals.
Kranz is hitting .345 (41-for-119) on the season, with 39 runs scored, eight doubles and two triples. He has driven in 33 runs.
Mills went the distance in his only appearance of the week, an eight-inning contest that Kutztown won, 5-0, over Bloomsburg. Against a Husky unit that entered the week hitting .313 (3rd PSAC) against conference competition, he scattered seven hits, allowing just two walks while striking out six.
In six appearances this season, Mills is a perfect 6-0 with three complete games. In 42.0 innings, he has allowed just seven earned runs for a 1.50 earned-run average. He has 35 strikeouts and opponents bat just .203 against him.
Kutztown will be in action on Thursday with a single-game vs. Wilmington (DE) at 3:00 PM at North Campus Field.
