KU MEN'S TENNIS SET TO HOST NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
KUTZTOWN, PA - The Kutztown University men's tennis team will host an NCAA Division II East Region first and second-round tournament on Thursday and Friday, May 3-4 at Keystone Courts.
There are 16 first- and second-round tournaments in the eight regions, two per region, throughout the country. The winner of each tournament advances to the finals in Altamonte Springs, FL, with the Central Florida Sports Commission and Rollins College serving as co-hosts, May 9-12.
Second seeded Kutztown (10-2) matches up against seventh seed Bentley (12-10) at 3:30 PM Thursday. Queens, sixth seed, (9-7) will face Mercy, third seed, (9-3) in the first match at 11:00 AM. The winners will face each other on Friday at 1:00 PM. Stonehill is hosting the other East Regional.
The winner of the regional at Kutztown will face the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Regional, being held at Armstrong Atlantic, in the round of 16.
The Golden Bears are making their 10th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional, having appeared in the tournament every year since 1998. KU has won the East Regional in each of the past five seasons to advance to the Division II round of 16. KU's men won their fourth-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title this season. KU has won seven of the last eight PSAC Championships under head coach Suresh Ramamurthi.
Kutztown, currently 31st in the nation, is led by Sanitago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) and Lukas Labitsch (so. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA). The duo, ranked first in the region and sixth in the nation, has a perfect 10-0 record at first doubles and 15-2 overall. Baquerizo is #2 in the region and 32nd in the nation in singles play with a record of 15-3. Labitsch (9-4) is 12th in the region in singles.
Bentley College is making its second-consecutive appearance at the NCAA Regional. The Falcons are led by Greg Avola and Greg Maloomoian in doubles. The duo has a 12-4 record this season. Maloomian (12-10) and Avola (9-5) are also Bentley's top singles players.
Queens College earned its sixth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Regional. Queens is led by senior Wojciech Stuchlik who is currently #1 in the region and #27 in the nation in singles play. The duo of Billy Almeyda and Stuchlik are #9 in the country and #2 in the region in doubles. Almeyda is #14 in the region in singles.
Mercy, currently 37th in the country, is making its fourth-straight trip to the NCAA Regional. Vyacheslav Glebov is fifth in the region in singles play while Alican Seren is ninth and Yusufcan Koksal is 15th. The team of Koksal and Glebov are #7 in the region in doubles action.
