KUTZTOWN BASEBALL RANKED #1 IN DIVISION II

 

KUTZTOWN, PA - The Kutztown University baseball team completed its climb to the top of the NCAA Division II Baseball rankings, earning the #1 spot in the April 30 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll.

 

            Kutztown is 43-3 overall, having won its last 14 games.  The Golden Bears take over the top spot from Cal. State-Los Angeles, which is 37-10-1 after losing three of four games last week. Cal. State-LA fell to #4 this week.  Sonoma State (44-8) and Tampa (39-9) are tied at #2.  Kutztown was ranked #2 last week and had spent several previous weeks at the #3 spot.  

 

            The Golden Bear baseball team is the first on record in school history to achieve a #1 national ranking.  The previous best was shared by two teams, last week's baseball team, which was ranked #2, and the field hockey team in 1997, which finished the year ranked #2.

 

            KU is just the second team from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference to reach #1 in the CBN poll.  Mansfield opened the season ranked #1 in 1995, and remained #1 through a handful of early-season polls before falling from the top spot.  

 

            Winner of the regular-season PSAC East title, Kutztown will take part in the PSAC Championships beginning Thursday with a 9:00 AM game against Shippensburg.  KU's next game in the six-team, double-elimination tournament will be later in the day on Thursday. KU is the two-time defending PSAC Champion and has won three of the last five crowns.

 

            KU has one final regular-season game against Albright tonight (Monday) at First Energy Stadium in Reading.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1240 AM, and on the web by KUR SportsOnline, at kubears.com.
