JOSEPH AMBROSE NAMED HEAD WOMEN'S BOWLING COACH AT KUTZTOWN
KUTZTOWN - Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) member Joseph Ambrose
will lead the way as Kutztown University rolls out its new women's bowling
program in 2007.
Ambrose, a 27-year PBA Professional, was named KU's first head
women's bowling coach by Athletics Director Greg Bamberger. KU will begin
its inaugural NCAA season this winter.
"Joe brings a great deal of experience with him to Kutztown
University," Bamberger said. "We look forward to working with him as he
builds our women's bowling program."
Previously, Ambrose managed Wallenpaupack Bowling Center in
Hawley, Pa., from 1979-2001, where he ran leagues, instructed professional
lessons, helped establish the Junior Bowling Program and owned and operated
his own Pro Shop. Ambrose's bowling career includes five sanctioned 300
games (4 USBC, 1 PBA), and he has competed extensively on the regional and
national PBA tours, including six PBA national championships and three U.S.
opens.
"I am totally honored and excited to be Kutztown University's
first head women's bowling coach," Ambrose said. "This is an incredible
opportunity and I cannot wait for our season to begin."
In addition to being a PBA Professional, Ambrose works as an
Assistant Golf Professional at Lake Mohawk Golf Club, Sparta, NJ, and has
also done the same at Paupack Hills Golf & Country Club, Greentown, Pa. He
is currently working on his Class-A PGA card and is a Level 2 Apprentice,
having passed his PGA playing ability test in 2004. Ambrose is also
President/Coach of Lake Region Kids In Sports Programs, a non-profit
organization for AAU Basketball. He has also coached baseball and tennis at
the Junior & High School Level, and has taught golf lessons at both Lake
Mohawk GC and Paupack Hills Golf & Country Club.
Ambrose was inducted into the Wayne Area Sports Hall of Fame in
2006 for lifetime achievements in bowling, golf, tennis, and basketball. He
lives in Greentown, Pa., with his wife, Diane, and their 16-year-old son,
David.
Women's bowling traditionally competes in the winter season. It
is sponsored by 50 institutions in the NCAA, including 17 predominantly
Division II institutions. Cheyney University is the only other school in
the PSAC to currently offer the sport on the varsity level.
The team will compete as an independent in the NCAA. The women's
bowling championship is not divided into divisions, so teams compete for the
opportunity to qualify for the Women's National Collegiate Bowling
Championship. The team's practice facility and site for home events are
still to be determined.
