KUTZTOWN SWIMMERS READY FOR PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
KUTZTOWN, PA - The Kutztown University swimming teams are set to travel to Mechanicsburg, PA, for the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships beginning on Wednesday.
The Golden Bears will be looking to improve upon their performances from a year ago, where the men placed sixth and the women were ninth. Kutztown has several individual swimmers poised for a shot at All-PSAC status (top three in an event) or even a PSAC title.
The women are led by junior Ashley Singer (Lititz/Warwick). She enters the championships with seven PSAC qualifying times. She has the second fastest time in the PSAC in the 200 free (1:55.76) and 1000 free (10:43.92). Singer is ranked fourth in the 500 free (5:10.75) and sixth in the 100 (53.42). Singer was a finalist in the 100, 200 and 500 at last year's meet; placing second in the 200 and 500, while finishing third in the 100.
Freshman Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem/Liberty) qualified for four events. She has the sixth best time in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.96) and ninth best in the 100 breast (1:08.50).
KU's top relay seed comes in the 800 free relay, where the team of Staci McGinty (jr. Jamison/Central Bucks East), Jill Pantelides (jr. Lansdowne/Archbishop Prendergast), Nikki Cattell (jr. Warminter/William Tennent) and Singer swam a time of 8:06.08, good for sixth among PSAC teams.
The men will be led by junior Sean Bonifas (Lancaster/Hempfield). Bonifas has the fifth fastest time in the 100 breast (1:00.34) and the ninth best time in the 200 (2:18.09). Bonifas earned All-PSAC honors in the 100 breast, placing third last season.
Junior Greg Fournier (Warrington/Central Bucks East) sports the eighth quickest time in the 1650 free (16:56.69).
The men have two relay teams that are ranked fourth. The 400 free relay team of Derek Orr (so. Easton/Easton), Steve Krater (fr. Port Carbon/Pottsville Area), Zane Zwillinger (fr. Wyalusing/Wyoming Seminary) and Rich Reshetar (jr. Pipersville/Central Bucks East) have a time of 3:16.27. The 800 free relay team of Orr, John Pandish (so. Milford/Delaware Valley), Krater and Reshetar enter with a time of 7:15.76. The actual participants of the relays will be determined on the days of the races.
Events begin on Wednesday (2/21) and will continue through Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA.
