KUTZTOWN NAMES 2006-07 TEAM MVPs




KUTZTOWN, PA - The Kutztown University Athletic Department has announced its 2006-07 Most Valuable Players, as selected by each team and/or its coaching staff.  

 

Kassandra Badman (sr. Horsham/Hatboro-Horsham) has been chosen as the Cheer Team MVP.  Badman, in her fourth year on the team, was the captain this past season.  During the team's interim period without a coach, she kept the team going.  "Kassandra was a kind, talented, awesome leader who was a great team player," first-year coach Amanda Schultz said.

 

Santiago Baquerizo (so. Guayaquil, ECUADOR) is the MVP of the men's tennis team.  Baquerizo is the Golden Bears' number one singles and doubles player.  He finished the year ranked third in the region and 34th in Division II in singles and ranked third in the region and 14th nationally in doubles.  Baquerizo posted a 16-3 singles record and a 17-3 doubles record for Kutztown this past season.  He was also named to the All-PSAC singles and doubles teams.

 

 Laura Belfatti (sr. Hatfield/Lansdale Catholic) has been chosen as the field hockey MVP.  Belfatti started all 20 games played in the 2006 season. She recorded 15 points from 6 goals and 3 assists.  Belfatti made the NFHCA second-team All-America and was an All-PSAC first team mid-fielder.  Belfatti also earned the Coach's Award for the 2006 season.

 

Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) was named MVP of the men's basketball team.  Ben was selected to the first-team All-PSAC East.  He led Kutztown and the PSAC East averaging 18.9 points per game.  Ben set a single-season KU record for free throws made with 148.

 

Sean Bond (sr. Malvern/Great Valley) was the MVP of the baseball team.  In 173 at bats, Bond batted .353, scoring 46 runs and accumulating 27 runs batted in.  Bond led the team with a .477 on base percentage and was third on the team in hits with 61, including 12 doubles.

 

Pat Bone (jr. Pipersville/Central Bucks West) has been honored as the men's cross country team MVP for the second consecutive year.  Bone was Kutztown's top finisher at the PSAC's and regionals, placing 25th at the conference meet and 31st at regionals.

 

Jess Brady (sr. Wescosville/Emmaus) has been named the women's basketball MVP.  Brady started in all 26 games for the Golden Bears this season. Brady averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.  She finished her career among KU's all-time leaders in free throw percentage.  Brady was also named to the All-PSAC East second team.

 

Sarah Brandon (jr. Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) has been selected MVP of the women's volleyball team for the third consecutive season.  The senior opposite hitter earned a spot on both the Daktronics and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Atlantic Region first teams.  She was also named the PSAC Athlete of the Year.  Brandon led the Golden Bears with 463 kills and added 120 digs with 138 blocks.

 

For the second year in a row Steph Denlinger (fr. Harleysville/Souderton) is the MVP of the softball team.  She was named the PSAC East Player of the Year, first-team All-PSAC East, Mid-Atlantic Region first team, Mid-Atlantic Region Player of the Year, and All-America first team.  Denlinger hit for an astonishing .507 average, crushing 24 home runs and batting in 73 runs, while scoring 70 of her own.  

  

Kim Kelty (jr. Levittown/Neshaminy) has been chosen the women's soccer MVP.  Kelty started all 20 games in 2006 for the Golden Bears. She led the team with 14 points scoring five goals (including one game winner) and recording four assists.  Kelty made the All-PSAC East first team as well as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region second team.

 

            Joe Kemmerer (jr. Mountaintop/Crestwood) has been named MVP of the wrestling team. Kemmerer was the 2007 NCAA Division II Champion at 133 lbs.  He became the fifth student-athlete in school history to win an NCAA title.  Kemmerer also won the East regional title in his weigh class and was 32-3 on the season, the second-most wins in a single-year at Kutztown University. 

 

Renee Marchand (sr. Hawley/Wallenpaupack) was named MVP of the women's indoor and outdoor track & field team.  Marchand was named to the All-PSAC indoors meet in the pentathlon, in which she placed second.  She also set a school record and qualified for the NCAA outdoor meet in the heptathlon, placing 11th.

 

Priya Pachkawde (jr. Nasik, INDIA) has been named the MVP of the women's tennis team.  Pachkawde compiled a 5-4 record in singles and a 5-3 record in doubles.  Pachkawde was the number one and two player for both singles and doubles for the University of Kutztown this past season.

 

Elfren Quiles (jr. New Britain, CT/New Britain) is the MVP of the football team.  Quiles set a school record with 12 touchdown catches.  He also led the team in receptions with 54, yards with 816 and points with 72.  Due to his outstanding performance last season, Quiles earned a spot on the All-PASC East second team.



Rich Reshetar (so. Lancaster/Hempfield) has received MVP honors for the men's swimming team.  Reshetar placed in six events at the PSAC Championships which included fourth place finishes in the 200 and 800 free relays.

 

Greg Sassaman (sr. Boyertown/Boyertown) has been honored as the men's soccer team MVP.  In only 11 games played, Sassaman took 12 shot attempts at the forward position.  "Sassaman was one of our team leaders who led by example," head coach Otto Ormosi said.  "He worked very hard through an injury plagued season."  



            Holly Shubilla (sr. Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) is the MVP for the women's golf team for the second consecutive year. Shubilla led the team with an 87.0 average this season.  She finished her career at Kutztown University with the second-lowest career average at 87.1. 



Ashley Singer (jr. Lititz/Warwick) has been chosen the MVP of the women's swimming team for the second year in a row.  Singer set school records in the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle races this season.  She was All-PSAC in the 200 and 500 free and went on to earn honorable mention All-America honors in the same events at the NCAA Championships.

 

            Steve Tyson (jr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) was the MVP of the men's indoor and outdoor track & field teams.  Tyson won the PSAC shot put title at the indoor and outdoor championships this past season.  He qualified for the NCAA outdoor shot put event, placing 11th.

 

Stephanie Williams (jr. Harrisburg/Riverside) has been selected the MVP of the women's cross country team.  She led the Golden Bear team, which won the NCAA East regional and placed second at the PSAC championships.  Williams earned a spot on the All-PSAC and All-Region teams by placing ninth and fifth, respectively, at the two championships.
