GOLDEN BEARS 48th IN DIRECTORS CUP STANDINGS
 

Kutztown University's athletic program finished 48th in the race for the 2006-07 NCAA Division II US Sports Academy Director's Cup.



            Kutztown compiled 336 points for its 48th place finish.  The Directors Cup is awarded annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the United States Sports Academy and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country at each of the NCAA Division I, II and III levels as well as NAIA.



            Three-time defending champion Grand Valley (MI) State won its fourth-consecutive Division II Directors' Cup.   The Lakers accumulated 995.75 points, 193.75 points ahead of the runner-up, UC-San Diego.  There are over 250 institutions which compete at the NCAA Division II level.



            Points for the Directors' Cup standings are awarded based upon finish in NCAA Championship competition.  The points are based on bracket size for team sports, or the number of teams that place in individual sports, for each championship. 



            KU was the fifth-highest Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) school in the Director's Cup standings, behind West Chester (12th, 504.5 points), Lock Haven (20th, 457), Bloomsburg (31st, 393), and Indiana (PA) (38th, 364).  



            Eight Kutztown programs contributed to the school's finish.  Those sports that registered points, along with their NCAA Division II national finish and points scored, are as follows:  baseball (tie-7th, 68.5 points), wrestling (16th, 58.5), men's tennis (tie-17th, 50), women's volleyball (tie-17th, 50), women's cross country (14th, 48), softball (tie-33rd, 25), women's swimming (26th, 22) and women's outdoor track & field (58th, 14).



            The Golden Bears placed 39th last year.  KU's highest finish came in 1995-96, when it placed 25th.
